So far been a bit quiet on trade targets, this time last year everyone knew we were into Mcstay and it was basically done. That was a fun few months around here haha

Maybe from August rumours will start to sprinkle out.

I don't really take any Serious about Rumors until pretty much end of the Regular Season

“One of our competitors” is not North.

“One of our competitors” is a team like Brisbane or Port.

For example (hypothetical), we might find that we don’t play GWS in the second half of the season, but Port and Brisbane play GWS three times between them. Wouldn’t it be smart of us to support GWS at the mid season trade table to help our Premiership campaign?

And if it’s smart of us, wouldn’t it be smart of Port, Brisbane and other contenders to do the same thing? (The difference being that the club at the top of the tree, like we currently are, are more likely to be the target)
So let’s think about this a little more clearly.
If this strategy is so important, then logically the Top team would settle for LESS in trading the superfluous player - to ensure the plan is implemented.
Alternatively, the lower team understanding the plan, drives a hard bargain, asking for a BETTER player than that offered.

Either way the Top team loses out, particularly as there is no guarantee the strategy works.
That’s why the idea makes little sense to me.

Bailey Williams from the Dogs is RFA, 25 years old and getting better numbers than anyone else I've heard us linked to, be a jet out of that backline with our gameplan and free up the chosen one to move to midfield permanently.

Unless the offer was stupid the Doggies will 100% match for him.

As in the lower team says “You’re offering us Ruscoe, how about you offer us Quaynor instead?

The answer would be “No”.

Already clubs are careful about who they do and don’t trade with - surely a mid-season trade period would be even more so?

My point exactly - so the motivation to screw another Club has a limit, that the lower club will exploit to drive a very hard bargain.
They’re definitely not accepting the earlier offers.
Which may not have been the case at seasons end, when the Top Club’s desperation was absent.

Surely a trade simply needs to make both sides better? (Which is why it’s generally a good idea to understand a transaction from the counterparty’s POV)

So why would driving a bargain any harder than that be met with anything other than a polite “No” answer? (Unless we’re dealing with Adrian Dodoro, which IIRC we don’t. Happy to be corrected on that)

Who is it concerning for? I personally find it a bit concerning that we’re offering a guy like AJ 3 years. I can see the reasoning for his retention and I’m on board with that, but that’s some generous tenure for a guy as flaky as AJ currently is. Him taking time to consider it probably hints at there being another suitor out there. Personally I’d be going with a slightly reduced offer compared to what we had in front of Henry.
Its how much Fly rates him, GW same.

In your scenario only the bottom side gets better - by recruiting a player.

The Top team only has the HOPE that their agenda is delivered, which is a completely uncertain outcome, but nonetheless fueled by desperation (otherwise why embark on such a risky strategy).

It’s a very big and exploitable opportunity for a lower club.

That’s why it just won’t happen- no Top team will try the tactic you’re suggesting.

Any way I think we’ve done the topic to death, I’ve got nothing more to add.
