There's a lot of talk in this thread about getting a decent forward-ruck in but where are they going to come from? I've checked out every other list for potential targets and there really isn't that gettable "unicorn" forward-ruck type who fits the bill on anyone's list at the moment for one reason or another, unless you want to tip our hat into the ring for Esava and try to turn him back into a forward (or at least a swingman)?
It's why Lobbe keeps getting good contracts. It's a really tough role to fill.

I've never understood why it can't be a defender/ruck - I just think it's groupthink - so I'm pretty bullish on Frampton and also think Krueger is a fair chance to fill the bill if the defensive half is no go.

I wouldn't chase a mature one, as ultimately I don't think it's that important a role.

It will be our Kreugs. I have never lost faith.

I am willing to march to war with anyone who doubts my boy.

I reckon Krueger comes good as a forward, but I think McRae is creative enough to not just go no one uses a defender as second ruck, and he'll make it work with Billy as our second ruck.

Problem with trying for a defender-ruck is the good defenders tend to play 90%+ game time (elite defenders tend to go at closer to 100%), so fatigue is one factor to account for. It is also much easier to hide a resting ruck up forward than it is down back, where you really want your defensive group to function as a settled and cohesive group.

The option you'd have to reach for is pushing a forward back to fill the gap the backup ruck is leaving behind, but then the question is how many players in recent memory (or ever) have handled being shuffled back and forward multiple times in a game on a regular basis and have actually been effective at both ends? The answer to that would be zero I suspect, as it's a bloody hard thing to do even once mid-match on a consistent basis from game to game, never mind every time you want to give the starting ruck a chop-out either up forward or on the bench.

I reckon this is the go too.

No reason long term we couldn't do a Geelong type ruck system with one in each zone, etc.

Most teams set their defence with two talls playing deep who play pretty much the whole game and another tall playing a bit higher, who covers more ground and thus needs to rotate. Calamity doesn't befall when he rotates or when a tall defender is subbed out.

And if most teams are rotating a third tall through forward and ruck, why not match it with a third defender through defence and ruck. It can work.

I think there are heaps of different possibilities than just first ruck playing 85% in the traditional role and a forward chopping him out for 15% game time. I think Cats won a flag from getting creative and turning what looked like a weakness into a massive strength.

I have blind faith in Kreuger, just think he will make it despite not really affirming my beliefs with his VFL performance. I think he would be the ideal forward/ruck option and gives flexibility with the ability to go back too.

Agree with the sentiment around the defender/ruck option, Billy could create a new niche in that role.

The left field option would be to bring in Jack Silvagni... I suspect there would be mixed feelings about this by pies fans, however I have always really rated him. He is effectively being pushed out the door and is an option to consider if the club doesn't have faith in Kreuger long-term.

If you were going to target one externally, I don't think it'd be Silvagni, McLean from Sydney can play and I think is coming off contract and not yet signed.

Payback for Ollie's stance and we get a genuine young mid who wants to come home to Melbourne and play with his beloved team he followed growing up.
Sounds familiar Catter's.....
Make it happen Pies.
Clarke is a Geelong local, so it’s more someone who wants to escape sleepy hollow than someone who wants to come home. Either way, unless he explodes next year they’ll have no right to ask for any more than Ollie, because he hasn’t set the world on fire yet.

I'd also suggest if true it could be a case of buyer beware. A first year draftee playing VFL requesting a trade from a top club would be a bit of a red flag.
I would seek alternatives too if I had to work with Dangerfield.

Jyhe Clark only 1 game this year. Unless he played all 22 next season then you'd expect a 3rd rounder would be enough.

Suspect this is just Pies fans having fun and that there's no truth to him wanting out.
I doubt that a recent top 10 pick would only be worth a 3rd rounder unless they've looked like complete garbage. Not sure that is the case with Clark.

Agree that there is likely nothing to it though

I’m not really sure I believe the Jhye Clarke talk at all.
I can absolutely, 100% guarantee you a guy drafted last year and out of contract in 2024 has not told his club 'he won't be signing another contract after next year'. Now, he could quite possibly come to the end of this year and asked to be traded while in contract, but there is no way he's gone to his club over a year out from his contract ending and said, 'sorry boys, not sticking around after next year, see you all at training next week and hey, any chance I can play seniors this week pls?'.

There was a bloke who played for the Cats VFL side George Stephens I would not mind trying to get him as he already has the body for it.
He also looks like he knows how to play, someone on here said just give me george Stephens I will be happy after watching him in action I agree with that sentiment, he looks like a bull in there.
