We have an over reliance on those aged above 30 through our midfield. At this age the end can come suddenly.

Mitchell 31 next year
Pendlebury 36 next year
Crisp 31 next year
Sidebottom 33 next year
Adams 31 next year
Assuming Sidey is the benchmark age - then Mitchell, Crisp and Adams have at least 3 more seasons left.

Whilst it might seem to only be a Pies thing according to BigFooty, isn't that essentially how we nabbed Frampton?
Lipinski and Krueger both depth. As was Darcy Cameron. If you're depth and have the chance of moving for more games, you're stupid of you don't go.

Macrae might be the logical next choice now, but pies could easily trade/draft in better mids over next 2 years and Reef and Allan could develop past him.

He hasn't been handled badly.
He was going to be dropped for our preferred mix, but injuries to Checkers & Cameron saved his spot.

So its fair to say he is first man up in the fwd line....but only through injuries at this stage.
With Howe going fwd, he's probably one more back in the queue.

He hasn't done enough to be considered 'unlucky'. Nor harshly treated.
In the same way you say Macrae hasn't done enough as a mid.
The most crucial 8 week block of the season and he was tracking nicely then falls off a cliff as Cox also drops away. None of what you’ve presented has remotely swayed me.

Yup all good.
Wasn't really trying to sway you.

Just giving a counter opinion in that i don't think he's being handled badly due to the fact i think injuries saved him from an extended run in the twos in the first place.

Would you pick AJ?
I would have v Port over Cox because he’d have done more to capitalise on the favourable matchup, IMO. That’s when it turned for him after he’d kicked 6 the previous fortnight. He’s now out of form, but if something were to happen to Howe then I would.

Injuries are ever present Ginnivan is currently in the same boat. It’s not a logical reason to suggest a player hasn’t been handled poorly. Was he in form when dropped v Port and then given the same run at it as Cox after a match we were dominated in all across the ground unlike any other match this season?

We have been linked to Freo's Liam Henry but I believe Western Bulldogs are in the box seat. Some media say Hawthorn while St.Kilda has also been linked.

We haven't really been linked with any others.

Ben McKay = Essendon
Sam Flanders = ??
Tyler Brockman = West Coast
Darcy Parish = Stay/Geelong
Elijah Hollands = ???
Brody Grundy = Stay/Port
Tom Barrass = Sydney
Dylan Stephens = North
Zac Fisher = West Coast
Jeremy Sharp = Freo
The lack of talk regarding Parish’s future - whether he stays or goes - is absurd compared to some of the midfielders in the last few years. Even Brad Crouch was a much bigger deal when he was a free agent.

I’ll be very surprised if he’s a Cat. The jungle drums usually beat this time of year if somebody is Geelong bound. They have too many ITKs in the media for this to stay quiet. But even Essendon have plenty and there seems no clarity from their end whether he’s close to re-signing or not.

This could be a Gaff-like situation where the player has absolutely no clue whether he wants to stay or go. I’m still hopeful we can get him over.

He was in poor form before that 6 though and only returned due to injury. To me, like Cox as a forward ,you just can't rely on him providing a contest at this stage of his career.

The way AFL footy works is that injuries present opportunity. AJ took his and played himself into form. Once he was in form our handling of him was poor which has lead to him dropping his form line again. I would agree that he’s not reliable enough as a forward, but that’s a separate discussion to our handling of him since the Fremantle match…

Hang on what??
in form?

Brought back for bulldogs and kicked 3 when we went rampant for 2.5 qtrs.
Was playing because checkers was injured.

then kicked kicked 3.0 against Freo and was average in every other facet of his game.
note: the 3.0 included one he could have let go over the back on the goal line. Hell even Bobby was behind him to take the mark.

With a combined tackle count across those two weeks of .....1.

When checkers and McStay both back for Port ....he was first man out.

Then he got a reprieve despite not tearing it up at VFL.....
Irrespective of how we went as a team that week, he was first out.

My point still stands that he has not been hard done by.
He's not best 22 and its only been as injury coverage that he's played in the last 7-8 weeks.

I appreciate that you think he should be ahead of Cox.
No issues on that train of thought.
I disagree, but its marginal for mine and not going to make or break the team.

But he has hardly being treated badly.....

Where I disagree is the assumption that being dropped resulted in his poor performance on his return, to me an ok game, a shit game, a few ok games, a couple of shit game, has been the form line of his career to date.

I'm still pretty bullish on him, but he needs some work. I've had the pleasure of watching the Chinese Olympic badminton academy drilling kids. They absolutely drill them to recover position, the millisecond the shuttlecock leaves the racquet they're yelling out back to the T over and over again. AJ needs someone yelling out back to the ball the moment the ball spills from a marking contest. At the moment, he just stands there watching it fall.

You looking for a job?

Pure speculation. But Parish wanting out rumours used to be to come to us. Perhaps he knows he wants out to us, but doesn't yet know whether we're willing to fork out for him...

That’s not what I was meaning. The poor performance on his return v Hawthorn was largely due to the extremely poor performance of the midfield group. Our forward group had no hope that week. The trend in those circumstances has been for Fly to back his players in which didn’t happen to AJ.

Where the treatment became poor was that he was then immediately dropped. That’s inconsistent with Fly’s supposed* philosophy of setting players up to succeed. The trend you’ve highlighted is part of what I’m getting at he’s a guy that needs that continuity when he’s up to allow him the opportunity to cash in. I’m under no illusion that he’s a work in progress, but if you’re comparing his treatment with others that have had fluctuating form he’s been treated differently and poorly.

I’m not sure I’m overly bullish myself. He’s going on 26 and I think that’s one you either have or you don’t a bit like Kelly’s competitiveness or drive to get to contests.

*supposed because I don’t buy it the way others have. I think it’s a line like us trying to find our best that’s purely window dressing.

This is a pass for me. I’m definitely not as invested in this as you.
