Our problem won't be positional, it will be their birth certificates. By the end of this season, 10 of our listed players will be 30 or more.

True. The top 4 (+Rich and WB) are all similar avg age based on games played ~26.5 (v league average 25.4) and ~10 players over 30 by end of the year (Gee will be 14 over 30).

League longevity is rising though so 30+ is not as near the end as it used to be - there are twice as many 30+ players in the last 4 years (~90) v 15 years ago (~40). And only ~20 in the 1970s, <10 in the 60s.

So maybe Sam Mitchell was a bit hasty going full Logan's Run (aka Leo Di Caprio Raya filter)...

The make up of the list of players who will be 30 or more next season emphasises to me the importance of acquiring a player like Parish this off-season, as we are likely to lose a lot of experience in our midfield over the next few years, with 5 of the 10 on the list being midfielders.

Obviously we won't need to fill those positions immediately, so should also be looking to target players in the current age bracket of 23 - 28 whose contracts expire at the end of 2024 and 2025 also.

Our own draftees should also continue to improve and be looking to force their way into the side as the older players continue to age.
The challenge might be getting the draftees to stick around.
Someone like Fin is the future, but he might want to go elsewhere for more opportunity.
I certainly hope that's not the case.

You would think Fin would get his opportunity this year at some point & most definitely next year ... if he's up to it. Surely he knows & has been told his time is coming and he's being developed to take over from our older midfielders. He's in the prime position right now to take that next step.

I agree. Fin hasn't had the early impact that his brother had at the Dogs, more of a slow burn, but he has plenty of good qualities.
I think when we play NM & WC, Fin will get his chance.
Patience, grasshopper!

He also has some concerns. He’s slow and not a great kick. He will need to develop his tank and decision making to an elite level to make it.

We actually have a lot of slow midfielders.. Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Adams, Mitchell... Adding in Macrae probably is not a great mix.
Well in that case him being slow is not going to be a problem after all..he can just replace an older, slow midfielder. Not having a great kick, also not a problem. He can just replace an older, slow, midfielder with a shit kick. Looks like you're it, Taylor 😂

Problem is he isn’t half as physical as Adams

He's a long way off that, but he has potential.
He just has to realise it.
Of course he's a long way off that...if he was even remotely a hybrid of Adams, Pendles & Mitchell, I'm sure he'd already be playing 😆 it was just an interesting exercise where all his listed faults that were holding him back were also traits remarkably similar to those he'd be replacing..

That was the point of my comment about focusing on what he's good at, rather than his weaknesses.

I suppose his weaknesses are only brought up because a lot of supporters are querying why he isn't getting picked and asking what part of his game needs to improve.

It's a shame to see an absolute champion go on too long - he's a shadow of himself.
He should have retired after kicking goal 1000 and gone out on top.
I hope Pendles knows when to pull the plug.

I think those writing him off have gone a tad too early.

I'd hope that a draftee who has played 11 games has the attitude that he needs to force his way into the side, which means dislodging one of our 30+ year old midfielders. It would also be a risk for another club to acquire an 11-game midfielder to play first team football, at the expense of their own draftees.

Not saying that it doesn't happen, but it's probably more the exception than the rule. As noted, his time will come, even if it's not as soon as he would like it to be.

This is true, from the few glimpses I’ve seen he’s great by hand and good at distributing in traffic. This is the onballers tool kit.

Nathan Broad would be an excellent fit for our defence as an unrestricted free agent

Especially if we get the lady in the photo with premiership medal as the steak knives.
