Saw plenty of Daics, plenty of Peter McKenna also
Fair enough - never saw anyone do an opponent's head in before the ball was even bounced like Daics as a centreman - ditto for the opposition coaches - he wasn't elite fast but he was an elite centreman because he was always 3 moves ahead of opponents and 2 moves ahead of opposition coaches.

I think my favorite Daicos game was the 1984 final against Carlton at Waverly. He just tortured then torched the Blues that day. A masterclass

He had quite a few of them, his skills were elite but his football brain was legendary status - I've heard tales from people I trust of seeing head coaches literally tearing at their hair in utter frustration at being unable not only to quell him but unable to even affect his play.

Greening would have been more influential if he hadn't been targeted but nobody I've seen had Daics skill set and foot smarts.

Daics would have been an elite mid-fielder had he not suffered serious foot injuries - so glad I got to see him play.

I have the civilian version of Daics' stress fractures in my feet (jumping down from trucks in the early days before I set up my own business).

Stress fractures of the feet are ongoing and need to be managed - even today 18 months after retiring my feet still swell up towards the end of the day.

Good luck with that - one thing I'd hate to have is a loss of mobility.

Yeah, Thompson to Price, Price bounces once and delivers a bullet to Macca. Macca from anywhere in range misses both goal posts by exactly the same distance - straight through the middle - Go Pies
I've been on the end of a few Barry Price stab passes, there was some pepper on them and that was after he retired and was coaching.

Great bloke too.

Understand GC - don't know if you are old enough to have watched Daics Snr play live as a centreman - that's what it used to be called - you couldn't really say he had lightning pace but he always left the opposition in his wake - not to mention scratching their heads in sheer bamboozlement lol.

But he was most likely the best centreman I have ever witnessed before injury cruelled him.

The only other one I would think might be an exception would be Geoff Raines - next to Buckley the most astonishing kick I have seen, only needed a couple of steps in the clear and he'd hit his man with a bullet pass.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. To me the best 2 centremen i have seen in my time is Peter Daicos and Maurice Rioli. They have no peers. I used to love it when Daics lined up in the middle. He would get plenty of possessions and more importantly, all of them were damaging. A superstar best suited to the middle of the park where he could tear the opposition apart. A tragedy that he did his knee. I was just grateful he was able to come back and guide us to the 90 flag. I probably marked Raines too harshly, comparing him to Daics.

Understood about Raines but a slightly different centreman to Daics - to me Geoff used to work hard to get into position to be first receiver. Once he got ball in hand it was a matter of one quick step to get clear, the second to balance and then BOOOOM - an Exocet missile onto a team mates chest well inside 50.

Daics was more a bamboozle 'em type player, he had so many options and had such situational awareness that he out thought everyone on the field.

Reinforces my point that Dekka is an A grade talent scout. We’ve had injury issues and really poor trades, compromising our draft position…but yeah he still manages to pick out gems.

I keep reading this talk of a career in the midfield cut down by injury but don’t agree.

He was glorious in the midfield after his knee and foot injuries. Basic career was he had 1st 3 seasons mainly as a HF then went to the guts for the next 8 seasons. He had 2 of those seasons badly affected by injury . His knee in 85 and foot in 87. In 88-89 he dominated the midfield more than he did at any time. Won a B&F, AA and State honours.

1990 with Shaw, Millane, Brown, McGuane , Wright Daicos and the addition of Francis and Russell we had an overloaded midfield and underwhelming forward line

Matthews took the 2 best mids in the group, Daics and Browny and put them forward and the rest is history. Daics career really mimicked Lethals and I reckon that was front and centre for that decision.

There's been a few games on Fox Footy in the last week from around 1990 and it reminded me of what a gun Tony Francis was. He probably wouldn't even get drafted today at 171cm.

I’d be super keen to see how that analysis came back from 2010 onwards. For context we’ve drafted one AA since 2008 and our draft record is very hit and miss of late. Don’t get me wrong Hine is one of the good ones, but give me a Dalrymple or Taylor any day.

Fair point. I cant recall the time line with regards to when he played mid/forward prior or after the knee injury. Thanks for putting a time line to it. All i remember is i wanted daics to keep playing in the middle, and i thought his time in the middle was limited to reduce wear and tear and coz he was getting old.

Allegedly as early as 86 Lethal had suggested Daics mid time was limited as he was too slow. That spurred Daics to his fittest and best mid results, maybe also the foot injury.

Pace was his Achilles if he had one. The heavy grounds of the 80’s and smaller Vic Park suited him. The move back forward was a blessing because he was so good there. Again mimics Lethal who was the best player I ever saw. The best mid who then became the best small forward ever in his twilight. Daics the most freakish mid and then the most freakish small forward ever. Nice symmetry.

Johnny Greening might have ended better than both except for O’Dea

Some of our best have had their careers cut short for various reasons. Greening, Millane - even Price pretty much retired at only 26.
