I'd love us to look at some state leaguers again in the mid season draft. An inside mid, intercept medium defender and crumbing forward are all list needs and there are some options around.

Bailey Rogers and Angus Baker are inside mid and intercepting medium defender solutions. No particular pure crumber I'm bullish on (Stengle I liked last year for some situations - in particular clubs with more established cultures), but as general forwards Bailey Lambert, Tyrone Thorne and Sam Lowson were the better ones last year.

Particularly inside mid. Even without any injuries in the area, we're so short on inside mids that one of the Browns or the not ready Macrae seem certain to be picked each week. A couple of injuries to the area and we're completely screwed.

A midfield of Jye Bolton, Haiden Schloithe, Bailey Rogers and Jacob Dawson would be competitive with what Collingwood already have. They're four AFL calibre midfielders who could step into a side and go well, with Schloithe and Rogers as a bonus being highly impressive forward of centre, beyond just being midfielders. Tom Lewis is another solid one if after a more defensively oriented and younger mid who plays a good contested brand of footy (he's a 10 tackle per game mid).

It's not like there is just one or two midfielders outside the AFL who can compete against AFL talent. There is a solid list of them.

I think we should be looking at Alex Pearce in Free Agency to replace Roughead

That's exactly what will happen. They'll either remove compensation or park all compensation to the end of Round 1, and then JDG will leave.
Personally I think it’s the right decision. It’s never made any sense to give free agency compensation. I think it inhibits the entire process and it’s a reward for clubs who manage their list poorly at best case, and another area of manipulation at worst as hinted about in the article which is a negative for 16 other clubs. Among many other things it makes no sense for

It would just be some rotten luck that they bought in future trading the year after we traded beams, and removed compensation the year we would receive two first rounders if our players left.

Mitch Lewis - 6 years in the system finally looks like he’s come of age as a dominant fwd.
As others have said, talls take time, but supporters don’t have the patience, and want quick results.

Some interesting discussion on here.

Logan McDonald won't leave Sydney for peanuts. If we play like we did against St Kilda all season, we won't come bottom four. We're playing a fast brand, the boys are seeing that it's fun to play footy and win and we're still not at full strength. Roughie, Dean and Maynard are all out. Although Dean hasn't played we can assume he'll probably be a fairly talented young player.

Then we've got emerging talent. We haven't even seen Reef, that much of Macrae, Harrison is exciting, Chugg has muscled up, Johnson is going to make his debut, Kreuger could play ... that's excitement. We've got a lot of untried talent on our list.

MSD, our focus needs to be on older kids. We can't keep getting youth. Our age pyramid is heavy on the bottom, empty in the middle and heavier at the top. So we need those 24-25 players. We get one or two at the MSD (although that means we'd have had season ending injuries :( ) then we could be a very strong side.

Realistically, recruitment needs to focus on Lipinskis; players who can't get a game and are talented at top sides. Robin Hood Recruiting paired with Boomerball (picking mature agers) and clever investment now builds success later on.

It’s one game against the reigning wooden spooners, with their best key defender injured on the bench. He had similar games back in 2019 and then did nothing for 2 years. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

"Robin Hood Recruiting". Love it. The journos will be all over this phrase soon. :clapping:

I disagree. I think that if they find there was inappropriate collusion between Essendon and Brisbane to rort the compensation system, then draft sanctions should be imposed. Why punish every other team twice, once through the rort then again through the removal of compo, and not specifically penalise the offenders

This Essendon trade period Sounds a bit like whatever it takes 😃. Those worried about Degoey compo, I highly doubt he’s going anywhere. Club knows his value, he’s our only genuine offensive match winner. No other mid is capable of the scoreboard impact he has
He’s not going anywhere. Publicly said he wants to stay, Fly has publicly given him a clean slate. Won’t stop the haters praying for the club to dump him though.

Are you suggesting that Lewis won't make it ?
If so when should have the Hawks cut their losses? Year 3, 4, 5 ?
What are his deficiencies to suggest he wont make it?

There is no talk of removing compensation from the system. The AFL is reportedly looking into the Daniher extension. Say (imagination here - would be a bit more subtle than this) if the initial deal was 3 x 750k and the 2 year extension results in the contract being re-written at say the final 4yrs x 600 (so they effectively get Daniher for a further 2 years for $150k), the AFL will dig a bit deeper. They are only examining the Daniher deal to see if there was something shady done by way of writing a bigger deal at the time to create compo, on the understanding it would be adjusted later.

Sounds pretty far-fetched that player and club would risk something like that. Although not as far-fetched if it was the other way 'round and the contracting club was Essendon.

He's got great hands. My doubts are: too slow to consistently get separation, not much of a ground level game and not big enough to be a consistent threat in a pack. Basically, he's too reliant on contested marks - which noone takes enough of to rely on.

I've advocated for us to chase Lewis. I feel like he has a tonne of potential. His deficiencies are he isn't quick, he doesn't have multiple avenues to goal and his production has been poor for two years. I really like his aggression at the contest, contested marking, leading and his best year of production is up close to 2 goals p/g which is really handy.

I think Apex is more saying that he’s not the answer. Think Peter Wright who is an average KPF (he was goalless in half his matches last year) that can bob up on his day in the right circumstances and dominate. A guy like Casboult has had 10+ seasons tantalising with his marking and size. Before Kreuger I was in a similar boat to Quicky re Lewis, but I’ve lost a bit of interest in a KPF for us unless it’s a proven high level performer or high end draft pick.

Brisbane and Daniher had incentive, as it would have stopped Essendon matching and thus Brisbane needing to trade for him.

Is it actually against any rules? So was there a risk - other than for Brisbane with the potential for the player of reneging on the deal?

Agree with all of that except not being big enough. He's 198cm, 92kg and attacks the contest. I think he's an ideal tall marking target who can at his best score goals or bring the ball to ground. That's the appeal.

Didn't realise he was that big. I think he's fine. A grunt KPF who will have some good games, but a bit like our ruck kpfs he's too reliant on contested marking, so we'd soon turn on him, because there will be plenty of days where not much shows up in the stats column.

Of course they had incentive - the incentive is why they are looking into it.

This sort of conduct (ie. agreeing to a contract on the understanding it will later be changed) is definitely against rules - "Conduct prejudicial to the Player Movement Rules". The risk for both player and club is that not only is it shady but that it also exposes them to massive sanctions.
