I agree that Grundy's clearances can be questionable but if he is scrubbing kicks forward, even if they get intercepted, it's one less clean clearance out of the centre for the opposition to exploit the 666. at least the other team has to start their attack from closer to defence which gives us an opportunity to set up our own zone

Yep this. We’re a territory team and even a scrubbed kick forward means you’re not starting a territory battle from the negative all the time.

TBH I’m supremely unfazed by talk of JDG and Grundy leaving one way or the other. I see pros and cons either way. I’m just here to register my desire to see the backside of both Brown’s, Cox, Kelly and Madgen. Collingwood will always find top end talent from within or external, I don’t know why we’re just a club that somehow finds them, but our obsession with the cloggiest of list cloggers is never ending!
Other than Cal Brown and Madgen, I'd suggest the rest of these players would be picked up by another club if delisted.

Cameron and Cox currently ranked 30th and 32nd respectively for average hitouts. Is that “adequate”?
Probably not a great metric to go by. There aren’t many teams in the league who have a genuine 50/50 ruck combo.
You’d assume if one or the other was playing 70-80% ruck time their numbers would go right up.

I'd much rather look for a key forward than another mid size in McStay.

I'd also prefer that Henry and Johnson get games behind Mihocek, Cameron and Grundy/Cox in the F50.

I wouldn't consider 195cm mid sized.

I think you’re burying the lead here! Hitouts is the most useless stat in the game alongside running bounces and spoils for forwards.

I respectfully disagree. T Brown might get a sniff or two because of his size, but any club that brings them in is wasting their time.

Ely Smith

Height: 188cm
Weight: 86kg
D.O.B: 13-09-2000
DRAFT ANALYSIS: "A really consistent inside midfielder whose distribution by hand and strength around the stoppages has been a highlight of his game."
Leagues: Under 18s Championships, NAB League Boys
OVERVIEW
Ely Smith is a player who rocketed from important TAC Cup player, into Vic Country representative, with a best on ground for his representative side at GMHBA Stadium in Country's loss to Western Australia. The performance was a culmination of a couple of months of good work, and in my eyes, went from a solid inside midfielder, into one with not only inside grunt, but actual hurt factor, which is something that few inside midfielders have. He does not quite have the acceleration or endurance of other inside midfielders, but in saying that, they are not deficiencies either, he is still very solid in those areas. Where he is strong athletically, is his vertical leap, and in terms of footballing attributes, he is strong on the inside, great at extracting the ball from a stoppage and his distribution by hand is superb. The big thing about Smith is the fact that the areas he can develop, are more ways that he can improve, rather than are currently deficiencies, and with his form, he could very well feature in the mid-draft region from the third round onwards.
STRENGTHS
  • Clearances
  • Strength
  • Distribution by hand
  • Vertical jump
  • Consistency
Smith has plenty of traits that make him not only a rounded inside midfielder, but offering something different at the level. Not many inside midfielders can boast an 80-plus centimetre vertical jump, with the Murray Bushrangers' midfielder achieving that in pre-season testing. His consistency, particularly in the mid-part of the year and the lead-up to finals was really strong and he became a key cog in the Bushrangers midfield, and shone bright when he represented Vic Country. Of the traits he is expected to and does have as an inside midfielder, is his strength, clearance work and distribution by hand.
Inside midfielders often do not get noticed unless they have blistering speed or hit the scoreboard - Smith does not have either, but his ability to win the ball on the inside and distribute to teammates in space is very good. In the TAC Cup this season, of the players to play 10 or more games, Smith averaged equal third most clearances per game with 5.4, behind Liam Stocker and Xavier O'Halloran - both of whom are expected to be top 25 picks. He also averaged 11.6 contested possessions per game - seventh most of those with 10 matches or more played, and equal seventh in disposals (23.5) of players under the same filter. Despite being largely contested, Smith's kicking is still very solid, averaging 57.4 per cent by foot, but more importantly, having the fourth lowest clanger percentage of any Victorian National Draft Combine invitee with just 8.5 per cent of his kicks resulting in a direct turnover. Overall, Smith's ability to stand up against bigger bodies showed, when he played well as the 23rd man for Collingwood's Victorian Football League (VFL) side.
IMPROVEMENTS
  • Scoreboard impact
  • Outside game
The two areas which Smith can continue to develop are his ability to hit the scoreboard, and his outside game. He has such a strong inside presence, he has largely not needed to impact on the outside, and while his speed and endurance are not elite, they are still very solid. He runs a 3.06-second 20m sprint and 20.8 yo-yo test, which is still good when you are at the coal face, and with his vertical leap, he could still play as a forward if required. To do that though, he would need to lift his scoreboard impact, booting 6.10 from his games this season, with that being the next major step in his development. In modern times, teams love it when midfielders are able to get forward and kick a goal or two, and with his traits, Smith could easily do that if given the chance. As a whole with his improvements, there are not too many deficiencies in his game, and it is more about just improving a lot of the little areas athletically, or building on his game in the forward half.

Ely Smith is out of contract this year, he can't get a game in the Lions stacked mid-field, in much the same way as Lipinski at the Dogs. Smith played a game for our VFL side in 2018 as a17 yr. old and did well playing in the centre. Currently Brisbane are playing him in the backline at VFL level and is averaging 20 possessions a game. In his NAB draft year he was one of Vic. countries best inside mids with elite handball out of clearances and good ability to win centre clearances. This how Kevin Sheehan described him in his draft year
ELY SMITH

Murray Bushrangers/Yarrawonga/Vic

188cm

87kg

13/9/2000

Medium midfielder who is competitive with repeat speed and strong attack on the ball. A star in one-on-one contests and at stoppages and has excellent vision and clean hands. Burst on to the scene with an impressive game for Vic Country as a late inclusion in the final match of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. Won the Bushrangers best and fairest.

Competitive Advantage: Stoppage star, hard as nails

Like Lipinski, Ely Smith would come at a bargain price and could be the inside clearance player Collingwood needs.Smith Also has put on 4Kg since being drafted and now plays at 91kg and 188cm a great size for an inside mid

he's never played like a key forward. he's always the 3rd banana.
I think that stems from a lack of talent as much as anything. He does a lot of work getting to marking contests, but you're right in that he doesn't hit the scoreboard the way you'd want. He's a decent contested mark, but mostly upfield - not exactly what I think our team needs.

Ely Smith was taken with the first of their Dayne Beams picks. No senior games in 4 years is a concern

As with several of his team mates, I think Grundy was adjusting to the new game plan, but I saw no evidence he was unsuited to it. How did you come to this conclusion?
The aerial presence both Cameron and Cox provide in front and behind the ball.

Grundy isn't a marking threat behind or in front of the ball.

I'm personally a big fan of the trade floated a couple of pages back that ultimately was:

IN: Taranto, Hill, McStay, 1x second rounder, 2x first rounders

OUT: 1x first rounder, De Goey, 2-3x third rounders

On SM-G981B using BigFooty.com mobile app
McStay free agency. Hill attracts a late second.

IN: Taranto and pick 6

OUT: De Goey

I can see why you like it.

How can geel fit him in their cap? Is there a seniors discount im missing?

They’ll likely loose a few this year. Higgins, Dahlhaus, possibly Smith, possibly Rohan. A few like Hawkins and Selwood extend at a discount. Not hard to find $900k in that lot.

Grundy isn't a marking threat behind or in front of the ball.

But at least 1 of them will still play when Grundy returns so you don’t loose all of it. It’s not Grundy v Cameron & Cox after all which seems the popular way of depicting it. I’m not convinced the 1-2 marks a game difference (Cameron averaging 4.5; Cox 3.5; Grundy 2.5) is significant enough a difference to support your argument.

Probably not a great metric to go by. There aren’t many teams in the league who have a genuine 50/50 ruck combo.
You’d assume if one or the other was playing 70-80% ruck time their numbers would go right up.

May not be the definitive stat but has them behind several others who have played similar mismatched seasons like DeKoning, Meek, Fort, and Marshall.

Do you watch many Brisbane games? And always start sentences with a capital young fella.
Critiquing another person’s grammar with a sentence starting with “and” is a bold strategy. Not saying it’s wrong to all the English teachers out there rather that I was always taught to never start a sentence with “and”.

It's a real big thing in basketball. There's also the 'ape index'.

I have an ape index of about 1.05, yet Daniel McStay is about 100x better than me at footy. Wingspan is not the be-all and end-all, but I would like a more rangy type KPF.
I guess that’s why my brothers used to call me an ape when I was younger!
