Jaxon Binns from Carlton could be another option (acknowledging the "he'd need multiple trips to the dry-cleaners before setting foot in the joint" jokes aside), has been arguably one of the best players in the VFL the last 2 years and had another massive game against us on the weekend (36 & 3).

He's a genuine speedster on the outside, and real driver with his run and carry - his speed and ability to rack up the footy through a high running work rate to get in to position to mark, would slot in nicely to Fly's style imo. Most Carlton folk I've spoken to are baffled how he's not had more than 1 senior game, though Voss seems understandably settled on Hollands and Acres on his wings.

I was warming on Battle until it was rumoured how much the Hawks are supposedly offering.

Would love Barrass but the cost trade wise would be way too high.

But Battle in for Murphy, Haynes (UFA) as a 2 year Howe replacement, Zurhaar (RFA) future Elliott replacement and then trade in a high-potential underperforming prospect like Stone, Will Phillips or something, it doesn't look so bad does it?

Think we are an elite winger and soon to be elite mid (Pendles) short. Ed Allan actually coming on would be oh so sweet.

Barrass wouldn't cost much in trade collateral, because the club who takes him also takes on the last 3 years of a fairly big contract.
Possibly something similar to what we got for Grundy or Treloar, as we off loaded their contracts to their destination clubs...

Only problem is a new coach might want the young defenders learning off him and to help mitigate the damage done by more experienced sides.

Weitering would be an incredible acquisition, for so many reasons. Amazing to think that he's only 26 years old - feels as if he has been at Carlton forever.

Would be a beautiful thing if Carlton can somehow manage to stuff up keeping him and he somehow manages to get to us. Pretty fanciful, but not impossible.

It's strange that he is yet to re-sign with them, however in an interview earlier this year he said that it should happen, despite St Kilda at the time throwing a massive offer at him.

It's also strange to think that Charlie Curnow is 27 years old. Seems a lot younger, but perhaps that's just a reflection of how he conducts himself on the field and the fact that he missed a large chunk of footy early in his career due to injury.

Fair enough - presumably they're ironing out the finer details now, hence the lack of reporting, even if St Kilda's offer was reported in mid-May.

If the plan is to just replace the old guard with some high profile free agents with the spare cash, you're going to have a rough time.

High profile free agents in general are becoming increasingly rare, let alone "big free agent key forwards". In the event one is available, you have to compete with 4, 5, 6+ different clubs offering huge money. St Kilda are trying to offer Luke Davies-Uniacke a 10 year deal on 1m+ a year. Sydney tried to offer Aaron Naughton 9 years on similar money, and he rejected it and wasn't even a free agent.

Who are the "big free agent key forwards" that have moved in the past?
Jeremy Cameron was a free agent, but GWS forced Geelong to trade. Geelong had the pull of country lifstyle, consistent finals finishes and fishing at moggs creek.
Tom Lynch went to Richmond. Rejected huge money deals from Hawthorn, Collingwood, Essendon to sign for Richmond on slightly less money. This was a Richmond team at the absolute top of their game with their flag window wide open.

That's two examples I can recall of a "big free agent key forward" in 10+ years.
Now ask yourself this: is Collingwood in a position to sign up a "big free agent key forward" right now? Keep in mind, money alone is nowhere near enough to bring one in.
Hawthorn will absolutely be in the market for a big free agent key forward, and they can say they have one of the best young lists in the AFL.

Yeah it's a fair point. I tend to think the best gun key forward is the one you draft, they rarely become available and when they do, you're one of every other club in the league just trying to get an audience with them. Then you need cap room, and if it's via trade you have to have the picks and/or players to get it done.
