One concern I have that hasn’t been mentioned is that with Cameron and Cox out, it’s likely that McStay spends a lot of time in the ruck and Mihocek bears the brunt of the work up forward. Don’t forget he has a badly broken finger. I’m really hoping he gets an opportunity to rest it sometime so it doesn’t become a bigger issue as the season progresses.

If reports are to be believed, then he doesn’t have any kind of a broken finger.

Daniher saves his best for the Pies and has kicked more goals against us than any other opposition he's faced.

He's kicked 26.19 from 12 games against us and limiting his influence will go a long way to winning the game.

He also kicked four goals in the one game Brisbane have won so far this year against Melbourne.

1) why we would McRae reveal his cards? I reckon there will be a twist.
2) I don’t trust Reef as a key forward target.
I prefer using Frampton (an ex ruck) and bringing in Ruscoe (our best VFL defender).
McRae did seem to hint at some kind of 'twist' but I thought he was really just saying they had a plan or they would have one. Reef I barely noticed in the VFL game but he still kicked 3. I am never quite sure about Ruscoe. He was particularly lively in the first half of the VFL game, with his coloured boots adding a bit of flair to everything he did. I am not sure that removing the height of Frampton from defence is the best way to combat Daniher and the chap with the wooden hip. McRae obviously doesn't intend to consult me for my view, so I will patiently await selection.

I'd take his average of 2 or 3 goals.

I'm always surprised when I recall Ruscoe is listed as 193cm.

Never looks it for mine and I see him more as your standby for Maynard within the 22 and not a genuine key defensive option.

Using Frampton as our No. 1 ruck and including Ruscoe as cover gives me flashbacks of Appleby vs Finlayson circa round 18 2019.

It's a no for me when it comes to that idea.

Ruscoe doesn't play tall but he was one of the better VFL players last week. Moore surely has to play on Daniher if Frampton does the rucking. Whatever we do we'll be weakening our attack or defensive structure. Fortunately I have no distinct memories of Appleby in the AFL, just hazy recollections fed by derisive remarks in this forum regarding his worth as a player. Ruscoe is at least a better player than Appleby. I'd like to see more of Trey's mum - she was fun!

Fly's comments strongly suggested it won't be Frampton in the ruck. But if you went Frampton, Ruscoe in would be as cover for Maynard's role, Maynard would be the one asked to play on a tall I think, as he's done it well before.

Fremantle won the hitouts 69-16 against the Eagles, but could only manage to win the clearances by 39-35. We should take note of this.
That's exactly where the game will be won, with the midfield. Fly knows we can't win the ruck contests, so it will be up to our midfield to win the centre clearances knowing Big O & Fort will be tapping it to the Lions midfield.

This. He always comes out looking like he wants to shed blood against the Pies. Always has the look of pure wrath in this fixture whereas the other 22 rounds of the year he dances his way around around the joint with a pair of clown shoes on and a top hat.

He suddenly becomes a good kick against us, but lot of it is that he doesn't like body contact and Moore has traditionally played a bit off him and looked to jump himself, rather than taking away Daniher's leap. Moore has improved a lot as a defender though.

It depends on the dominance of the ruckman. A +53 hitout differential for Nic Nat or Gawn is different to a +53 from Nankervis or Grundy. Unfortunately the big O is more a Nic Nat/ Gawn type who can leverage a hit out advantage into big clearance numbers because he clears the contest.

That means for me there’s three cascading issues that will define the match:

1. How we deal with their spitters
2. How we defend even number situations in our D50
3. How effectively we move the ball from D50 to F50

On the face of it we should be no chance this week because the cards are stacked against us. I’m anticipating a -15 to 20 clearance differential with a lot of those clearances into open space on a small ground against a forward group under pressure and needing to bounce back. Add into the mix consecutive 6 day breaks plus the travel factor and I wouldn’t be surprised if we get touched up.

The flip side being of course that if we break even or near enough at stoppage we’ll win because that’ll say a lot for the Lions intent.

What's a spitter?

I think we might have just set up a few gags, but it's a serious question.

Brisbane have been putrid in their F50 once the ball hits the deck - their smalls aren't getting to the drop of the ball or crumb. If that continues, I'd expect us to score heavily from our D50, which gives us a chance even if their mids get on top. IF our mids just break-even, I'd expect us to get on top.

Players that “spit” out of clearance. The best example in recent history of the damage spitters can do is the final 40 minutes of the 2021 GF. That’s an extreme example of course, but if McInerney is clearing space at stoppage (which will happen a lot) and our sweeper isn’t locked in I think we could see a lot of those forward clearance situations. At a guess Pendles, Crisp, Mitchell and Adams will receive the bulk of the CBA’s this week.

Agreed, but it’ll be a massive task getting the ball to ground if McInerney has anywhere near the type of game I’m expecting from him.

FWIW Ash Johnson should be our number 1 ruck on Thursday. McStay rightfully won’t jump at centre bounce so McInerney won’t either and with that height advantage it’ll get ugly. Johnson though will jump over McInerney enough to maybe prevent him from being ultra aggressive. Massive no to Frampton as the number 1. The worst possible result would be a pantsing in the middle of the ground while we’re short in defense, IMO.

According to Footywire:-

Clearances: Lions (1st), Pies (4th)
Centre Clearances: Pies (5th), Lions (8th)
I50: Pies (2nd), Lions (16th)
HO: Lions (4th), Pies (7th - not that this will last!)
Marks I50: Pies (6th), Lions (14th)
Intercepts: Pies (10th), Lions (13th)
Clangers: Pies (6th), Lions (8th)
Rebounds: Lions (4th), Pies 18th!

Strange stats. You can put down the clangers to our attacking style of play. And perhaps our Rebounds are worse due to the Port Game, they never had it there! Our MI50 are no doubt better due to our corridor work too.

What it does show is Lions are better at around the ground clearances. We'd be better off not contesting those ruck contests and instead dropping 1 player forward of the ball to prevent the ball getting knocked to advantage too easily.

Given that neither Hipwood or Daniher are known for their inside 50 ground ball gets, having Frampton help ruck the D50 stoppages won't hurt.

Mihocek probably chops out in the F50 stoppages as well.

Yep I’m ok with Moore going to Daniher and Frampton rucking when inside D50. No problem with that at all.

According to Fly we don’t have any defenders ready to come in, which is as much an indictment on Ruscoe as it is on Kelly.

Luckily Ryan gets a pass at this juncture!
