West deserves to be playing at AFL level. He's a victim of our midfield depth. His best position is inside mid so I can understand that we don't want to play him for the sake of team balance. However, having him dominating VFL will keep the pressure on our first picked mids to perform or hand over their spot. He'll get his opportunities this year due to form fluctuations or injury (hopefully the former). Side looks okay on paper. Defence very vulnerable. Midfield stacked, obviously. Serious height/marking power in our forward line. I think whether we win will come down to how many goals we can get out of Bruce, Naughton and English.

I still think we should of played at least one of JJ or Richards of HBF.

What annoys me is that these new shitty rules make me think line breakers & pace will be critical, having those 2 in would be huge.

Not a bad team by far, but I’d a few changes away from being our best 22

I’m not so much fussed about JJ being out - I’d have him in, but I was also critical of him in 2020 so I’m not unhappy about him being sent a message.

But West not being included is laughable. He’s exactly what our forward line needs.

Also, I don’t care how often I have to say this, I’ll keep saying it: Ryan Gardner should not be anywhere near this team.

And further to that, Ryan Gardner being selected over premiership player Zaine Cordy and the much better Lewis Young is extremely irritating.

Team selection and Beveridge’s excruciating pig headedness were the things I wanted addressed in the off season - looks like they haven’t changed one but judging by that line up.

The much better Lewis Young? Come on mate... Fletcher Roberts and Shane Biggs are premiership players, doesn't mean they still belong in our side. Winning a flag doesn't cement your spot for the remainder of your career regardless of form.

Cordy and Young played ressies for the practice and preseason games, and neither impressed in the slightest. Why on Earth would we play them ahead of Gardner at this point?

How long will it be before seeing R Gardiner at full back stops evoking genuine fear every week

I already have mental images of him doing his head shake while Cox takes another mark.

Though Roughead’s name in the backline wasn’t reassuring and he’s doing OK in the black & white. You’d like to think one of our forwards could overpower him...

Nope.

Cordy and Young are better options than Gardner every day of the week.

I’ve actually been easier on Gardner than most and given him credit when he’s improved, but even then he’s improved he’s improved to being barely adequate, rather than improving to being good.

If Gardner improves to being a good solid defender I will be delighted and the first to admit I was wrong and will give him the credit he deserves.

Am a long, long way from being convinced he’s up to it at the moment.

Looking at the side Dale will be playing back, so essentially Scott and Dale are both ahead of JJ at half back. It’s good to see Duryea in as he’s definitely in the best 22. I would have preferred West ahead of McNeil at this stage. Hopefully Hunter’s back to his wing position.

We need to get Naughton on Roughy.

He's probably the easiest to get separation from which Naughton thrives on.

I wonder if Collingwood sacrifice Moore to play head to head on Naught.
