I feel like Young's reputation increases with every game he doesn't play here. At this rate he'll be a Brownlow medallist in waiting by round 23.

Aside from the rose coloured debutant glasses of his first few games, where I saw encouraging raw athleticism, unfortunately I don't think I've ever seen Young look close to AFL standard.

I hope that one day he'll get there, but irrespective of my thoughts on Gardner, I don’t understand how Young could possibly be seen as being ahead.

Correct but that’s clearly the role he has trained and played in for the upcoming season. The point is you can’t take Dale out without replacing him with another trained defender.

Could replace him with a rock mate.

These new rules changes are going to make us brilliant to watch as we thrive on the chaotic front running aspect.

They’ll also make it terrifying when the opposition has the ball. The back side is so open if you can get it over the top quickly.

Wish we had a young Suckling on our list. His leg would be bloody perfect for the new rules.

Hope our mids are ready to run very hard both ways.

We lack genuine speed imo.

I am nervous how we will manage our glut of mids
Disagree that speed is our issue. Treloar, Smith, Vandermeer, and O’Neil, all have genuine speed. It will be great once we can add Richards or JJ to that group.

Our glut of mids will be a major asset with the length of these games and the lower interchange.

I was going to wait until 5-6 rounds in before calling for the coach's head, but **** it, sack him now. This board is rarely united, but in recent years when it has been is decrying the team selections early doors each season. But i'm sensing a lack of total displeasure with the round 1 team, I'm a bit on the fence myself. And I hate uncertainty - and for that I blame the coach. Treloar will accrue 35-40, Bont will kil it, Martin will nullify Grundy, we'll romp the inside 50 count in - but still lose. I'm not sure my post makes sense on the screen, even though it did in my head. If Scott and/or Dale play in defence, I'll spew up!

Go Dogs, occidere vermis inventus est

Really? With Treloar, McNeil, Vandermeer, Dale, and Bailey Smith, I think it's one of the quicker sides we've named in recent history. I also think if you take the inside mids out of the equation we don't really have a lot of guys who are slow for their position.

I have a few concerns about this team but for once pace isn't one of them.

Sorry if this has been mentioned 10 x above (too tired to scroll) but how much better would we look if we played English, Bruce, Schache + Bont as our tall forwards (Marra beating the door down behind them). With Naughton And Keath down back and Richards and JJ running off half back.

Our defense just looks shite on paper. And it’s shite by choice. That’s the frustrating thing.

How long will it be before seeing R Gardiner at full back stops evoking genuine fear every week

It'll be be a while yet I suspect. Especially if our mids cannot build and maintain control games.

As most teams will, the pies will look to exploit our one glaring weekness by playing Cox out of the square and put it on his head all night. History has shown that the best way to combat Cox is to nullify his run at the ball by putting body pressure on him. Its something that neither Gardner or Keith excel at. Indeed Gardner seems mostly clueless when it comes to this aspect of the game. Its truly an indictment on our club that our KPD stocks are so threadbare that we are tasking a journeyman who has played 12 games to undertake this role.

Interesting side
The 3 questions from last year
Other than adding Martin - no extra height in key positions
English is not number 1 - strange
Bevo however has made 6 changes - well done

The side looks a bit short down back

I would expect a running game or few moves at the start or just after

Not without a chance
Go Dogs

Do we really need to play tall down back? Keath to Cox and Gardner to Mihocek.

If we don’t win the clearances tomorrow night I’d be concerned. Our mids need to work back hard too- can see tonight what happens when teams leak.

Doesn't matter how talented our list is when we have a match committee that are simply incapable of picking a team even close to resembling our best 22.

Past performance counts for nothing at the Bulldogs' selection table apparently.

We should be entering this game with an intimidatingly strong looking side, capable of striking fear into the competition, but apparently it is more important for Beveridge to show what an awesome spotter and developer of talent he is. So we have to keep selecting teams capable of winning games but without being a clearly stronger team on paper because if we did that then Luke might not get enough credit for the performance/victory.

On the bright side we still have enough talent in the side to give us a chance of winning.

Lets' hope the boys help Guru Bev add to his mystique, and that somehow circumstances conspire to force his hand to more reasonable selection outcomes as the season progresses.

Pretty sure this board complained about JJ all last season. He finally is dropped and now everyone's complaining, when all we've seen from him was a mediocre performance against an undermanned Casey

hey guys, saw it suggested earlier that mcneil would get dropped for vandermeer who is preferred apparently, but i've seen now that they are both playing. does mcneil have a good chance of keeping his spot or is he under serious pressure to be dropped unless he kills it?

What you said doesnt make sense since they both played against Melbourne so they werent competing for the same spot.
