And there you go -- in the preview last week, I suggested there were lots of questions to be answered about the Mighty Magpies. The game against Geelong has answered almost all of them. Our clearance work is better thanks to Mitchell. Bobby Hill will make an impact. Our game plan holds up and is well suited to our players, and it holds up even under severe pressure. Jordan DeGoey is likely to to rise to his talent level and dominate the competition. Most importantly -- we are one of the best teams in the comp. Yes, yes, it's only one game in a long season, but it was enough evidence for me. Let's bask in the glory a little.

Still, there was one huge downer during the stellar night. The greatest mark the game has seen, Jeremy Howe, flew kamikaze-style into a spoil. He shot through the air horizontally, like a missile, and when he crashed do the ground he shattered his arm. This is a heavy blow. Howe has defied age. He leaps like a cat, he possesses incredible pace, he intercepts to start shredding counterattacks with his two-sided elite disposal. He helps organise us with his onfield leadership. We can only hope he's back before too long.

Which means.... step up Billy Frampton (sorry Kelly, I've given up on you for the moment). Murphy takes Howe's more intercepting role and Frampton takes Murphy's more lockdown one.

We still have enviable depth which will hold us in good stead for a while yet.

Opponents: The Power

The Power are a strange team. A newcomer to the competition, there's no traditional hate between us. I don't harbour long-held vendettas against them for rodent-like, deceitful, morally repugnant, behaviour (yes Carlton, I'm pointing the bone at you). But they do seem to possess some odious personalities. Kane Cornes is a professional stirrer, a kind of shock jock of football, minus the politics. I hated him as a player, but now he's more like an annoyance, the buzzing of a mosquito in my ear at night. And their President, the loathsome, middle-brow, out-of-touch, egotistical Koshi.? A morning TV presenter as President? I feel sorry for Port's coach.

What about the current team? They have a great interceptor in Alir, a good key forward in Dixon, wild-cards in Georgiades and Rioli, some inside bulls in Wines and Powell-Pepper, some elite young talent with Butters, Rozee and Horne-Francis. They were excellent at home against a highly-touted Brisbane, doing the Lions down and by doing so, proving their upper level is elite. And yet, and yet, I still don't quite know what they are. I suppose another way of looking at it is that they're pretty good at everything. They look like they'll be battling with a bunch of teams for a top-four spot.

This game then is going to ask a few more questions of us: Will McStay actually be the player we hope? He was great in the pre-season but his performance against Geelong was disappointing. Will the Cox/Cameron duo continue to fight the good fight? They were solid against Geelong but here they should be better, before the real tests come. How will the backline go without Howe? Will our better clearance work hold steady?

The Washup

The game's at the MCG, we're in stellar form, and the Power are surging but can we trust them? About as much as we can trust Kreepy Koshi and Shock-Jock Kane.

The Pies by 13 points!

The 22 that started the practice match was our best 22 going into the season minus Maynard for Frampton and and Ginnivan.
There is no doubt there will come a time when he gets the bullet, but it hasn't happened yet. Contracted until the end of 24, he will play many more games for us, each of which will undoubtedly be preceded by calls for his axing from many on BF.

Then one day they will finally be right.

Then someone will get injured and he'll be back in.

I used to find it very difficult to hide my joy when a teammate's injury saved my bacon. But in the end, with sufficient practice, I got pretty good at it.
I'm like that when someone Fs up at work or leaves. It's even better if I don't like them. Nothing like outlasting people who would like to see you go.

sounds like Reef will be sub again, if they can't fit in him into the 22

McInnes looks likely to have done enough to stave off Johnson for another round, likely to retain his role as the sub at the MCG for the second week in a row.

His early season appearance comes a year after his campaign. was curtailed due to a shoulder reconstruction, with McRae crediting the 20-year-old's efforts since returning in the summer.

"It's just affirmation for his pre-season," McRae said of McInnes' two-goal performance from just 38 per cent time on ground in Round 1.

"We'd like to reward him more than just the sub. This week, who knows? He might be the sub again. Time will tell.

"He can come on and have an impact. It's amazing, his height is deceptive, he's a weapon. He can mark the ball and he's aggressive size, so it's a good start.

"He would have played a lot more (AFL) footy last year. He played well when he played with us and then unfortunately got injured. On a Sunday when everyone else is at home on the couch, he's in here working.

"He's that kid that you walk in and you go: 'this kid is going to get the best out of himself'. And we love that around our environment and he gets rewarded for that."

Frampton will play. Fly confirmed yesterday. And Moore will be playing on Dixon. It’s pretty likely that Frampton will be playing a third tall/intercept role, similar to Howe, with Murphy remaining the second tall defender.
Just gotta hope that's the case, would hate to see him stuck one out in the square with the likes of Dixon.

I said early in the pre season even if he’s not best 22 he’ll play a lot of games because he’s first in line after injuries.

WHE wouldn't be close to be being one of the first picked each week.

He's not part of our regular defensive group, he doesn't play a major role when it comes to midfielders who rotate through the centre circle and with the addition of McStay and Hill he's now up against more forward options.

In reality his influence has been on a downward trajectory from his career high season in 2018 and he will be one of those under the most pressure week on week from the likes of a developing McInnes, a specialist forward in Ginnivan and most definitely Lipinski if he successfully recovers.

If you think WHE is one of the first picked please nominate all those Collingwood players he's always selected well ahead of. Looking at last weeks nominated starting 18 (which he was a part of) I doubt many would consider him more important to the structure of the team than any of the 4 players listed on the interchange let alone before they even consider the other 17 names.

Given the jack of all trades role he fills as that 6th to 8th best option in defence, midfield or attack in any one week it's probably only apt his place in the side will be under pressure from those players who while they mightn't be as versatile might be able to play a singular position at a higher standard.

Ginnivan for one kicked more goals in 2022 than WHE did across the entire 20-22 period.
I doubt any club identifies players and as being first, second pick etc, just the best player for each required role. If they did rank them this way, I doubt we'd ever know.

As for Ginni Kicking more goals, I can't see the two players could be considered to be competing for the same position. Ginni has played a forward pocket role, while WHE's role is more like a winger, covering ground Ginni wouldn't be capable of.

WHE plays a role they seem happy with. Not sure if I'd have him as a lock every week, but he's obviously meeting their expectation.

Dunno mate. Got this from MMM
It doesn't have the date.
He's extremely fast either way.

The fastest players in the competition

Source: AFL Live app

1. Eric Hipwood (Brisbane) - 35.7 kilometres per hour

2. Ethan Hughes (Fremantle) - 35.6 kilometres per hour

3. Gary Rohan (Sydney) - 35.3 kilometres per hour

4. Connor Menadue (Richmond) - 35.0 kilometres per hour

5. Will Hoskin-Elliott (Collingwood) - 34.9 kilometres per hour

Pretty old data would be my guess given Menadue finished at Richmond and Rohan at the Swans a fair while ago.

Needs another 15 or so to become a 200 game player. Pretty handy career that.

Stopped clock is right 2 times a day!
