And there you go -- in the preview last week, I suggested there were lots of questions to be answered about the Mighty Magpies. The game against Geelong has answered almost all of them. Our clearance work is better thanks to Mitchell. Bobby Hill will make an impact. Our game plan holds up and is well suited to our players, and it holds up even under severe pressure. Jordan DeGoey is likely to to rise to his talent level and dominate the competition. Most importantly -- we are one of the best teams in the comp. Yes, yes, it's only one game in a long season, but it was enough evidence for me. Let's bask in the glory a little.

Still, there was one huge downer during the stellar night. The greatest mark the game has seen, Jeremy Howe, flew kamikaze-style into a spoil. He shot through the air horizontally, like a missile, and when he crashed do the ground he shattered his arm. This is a heavy blow. Howe has defied age. He leaps like a cat, he possesses incredible pace, he intercepts to start shredding counterattacks with his two-sided elite disposal. He helps organise us with his onfield leadership. We can only hope he's back before too long.

Which means.... step up Billy Frampton (sorry Kelly, I've given up on you for the moment). Murphy takes Howe's more intercepting role and Frampton takes Murphy's more lockdown one.

We still have enviable depth which will hold us in good stead for a while yet.

Opponents: The Power

The Power are a strange team. A newcomer to the competition, there's no traditional hate between us. I don't harbour long-held vendettas against them for rodent-like, deceitful, morally repugnant, behaviour (yes Carlton, I'm pointing the bone at you). But they do seem to possess some odious personalities. Kane Cornes is a professional stirrer, a kind of shock jock of football, minus the politics. I hated him as a player, but now he's more like an annoyance, the buzzing of a mosquito in my ear at night. And their President, the loathsome, middle-brow, out-of-touch, egotistical Koshi.? A morning TV presenter as President? I feel sorry for Port's coach.

What about the current team? They have a great interceptor in Alir, a good key forward in Dixon, wild-cards in Georgiades and Rioli, some inside bulls in Wines and Powell-Pepper, some elite young talent with Butters, Rozee and Horne-Francis. They were excellent at home against a highly-touted Brisbane, doing the Lions down and by doing so, proving their upper level is elite. And yet, and yet, I still don't quite know what they are. I suppose another way of looking at it is that they're pretty good at everything. They look like they'll be battling with a bunch of teams for a top-four spot.

This game then is going to ask a few more questions of us: Will McStay actually be the player we hope? He was great in the pre-season but his performance against Geelong was disappointing. Will the Cox/Cameron duo continue to fight the good fight? They were solid against Geelong but here they should be better, before the real tests come. How will the backline go without Howe? Will our better clearance work hold steady?

The Washup

The game's at the MCG, we're in stellar form, and the Power are surging but can we trust them? About as much as we can trust Kreepy Koshi and Shock-Jock Kane.

The Pies by 13 points!

I’ve not been able to watch the game, was Hos actually playing in defence or was he still predominantly on the wing but perhaps a more defensive winger?

From what I can see on the AFL app, his possession heat map is all up and down the wing?

WHE played predominantly his wing/HF role but pushed into defence after Howe went down. That full ground run is his 1 wood and generally why he continues to get selected though IMHO.

I thought these stats were interesting from round 1 -

Port with 24 marks inside 50, well ahead of anyone.
They also had 28 offensive 1v1s (with Richmond, well ahead of others - perhaps more reflective of Bris and Carlton defence, often isolated?). Port also allowed 18 defensive 1v1, which is up there.

Coll v Gee was the opposite - just 2 and 6 offensive 1v1s each = neither allowed defensive 1v1s (though 16 marks each inside 50 suggest there were still marks in space/over the back).
Hopefully means Mcstay has more chances v Port (and Port should have a harder time going into 50).

You have just the two players on your injury list then Finlayson and Lord. That's pretty good.
Boak as well. Would be surprised if he is ready to play by now after broken ribs. McKenzie has also done an ankle and will miss. It might mean we go smaller down back, or Clurey comes in.

Everyone seems to think Frampton is a walk up start this week, but I hardly see him as a like-for-like with Howe.

The Pies love to play a zone defence which his highly dynamic, and from what I saw from Frampton in the preseason and at the Crows (when he managed to get a game) was that he’s far from that dynamic type.

I hope that if he is included, which he probably will be, that he doesn’t slow the transition of the footy from back half to front half.

Keen to hear if I’m the only one that feels this way? Honestly thought we defended unbelievably well after Howe went down, with great team defence - the way Murph and Moore left their men at the perfect times and read the flight of the ball was awesome.

Can definitely see Billy getting exposed by Dixon at times. Hopefully I’m wrong.

If Billy comes in he'll play the Howe roll. Not on Dixon. Moore will likely get him.
Billy is good at intercepting and very fast.

Billy is better suited to Marshall.

WHE might even be swapped out for Reef this week, but I guess the "some" you refer to above includes all the selectors who up until now have never seen fit to omit him?
Our coaches are wonderful but not immune to criticism. Will is clearly one of our weakest links and was last year too.

Fly confirmed on SEN today, he'll play.

He’s a walk up start.

Since Robbie Gray won't be playing, I feel a little more confident

I think the biggest thing for me will be weather ports midfield can run both ways for 4 quarters with us I watched there game last week and there's a hell of alot of hard forward running from both Brisbane and port where I think we possibly have the best 2 way running midfield in the whole competition if we can get on top in there I think it will be alot like the Geelong game a scrap for 3 quarters then I think we run over the top in the last I'm tipping us by around 30pts

The WHE love on here is bewildering… had minimal impact on HF line for years and been demoted to defence.. to then stink it up again

Will be all together phased out of the senior side soon enough
Probably was saved by Lippa's injury, as prior to that he was playing off half back (where he would struggle to get a game). I've liked him for years, but do think he was the one that would first get phased out.

129 games in six seasons would suggest that the love is very much at the club.

All depends on injuries and the development of our young blokes. All things bring equal we would have expected/hoped that Macrae, Kreuger, Dean and Draper would be pushing top 25 this year.

Yeah, not ideal they are all injured. Well were. At least Macrae will be back playing this week. Draper going through concussion stuff.

WHE may be in trouble when Ginnivan returns. Hill shuffling to a half forward flank and Ginnivan forward pocket. He has a game or so to iron out the turnovers.
That's my view of the change of positons. Hill can cover a lot of ground, so makes sense he moves up to HHF
