And there you go -- in the preview last week, I suggested there were lots of questions to be answered about the Mighty Magpies. The game against Geelong has answered almost all of them. Our clearance work is better thanks to Mitchell. Bobby Hill will make an impact. Our game plan holds up and is well suited to our players, and it holds up even under severe pressure. Jordan DeGoey is likely to to rise to his talent level and dominate the competition. Most importantly -- we are one of the best teams in the comp. Yes, yes, it's only one game in a long season, but it was enough evidence for me. Let's bask in the glory a little.

Still, there was one huge downer during the stellar night. The greatest mark the game has seen, Jeremy Howe, flew kamikaze-style into a spoil. He shot through the air horizontally, like a missile, and when he crashed do the ground he shattered his arm. This is a heavy blow. Howe has defied age. He leaps like a cat, he possesses incredible pace, he intercepts to start shredding counterattacks with his two-sided elite disposal. He helps organise us with his onfield leadership. We can only hope he's back before too long.

Which means.... step up Billy Frampton (sorry Kelly, I've given up on you for the moment). Murphy takes Howe's more intercepting role and Frampton takes Murphy's more lockdown one.

We still have enviable depth which will hold us in good stead for a while yet.

Opponents: The Power

The Power are a strange team. A newcomer to the competition, there's no traditional hate between us. I don't harbour long-held vendettas against them for rodent-like, deceitful, morally repugnant, behaviour (yes Carlton, I'm pointing the bone at you). But they do seem to possess some odious personalities. Kane Cornes is a professional stirrer, a kind of shock jock of football, minus the politics. I hated him as a player, but now he's more like an annoyance, the buzzing of a mosquito in my ear at night. And their President, the loathsome, middle-brow, out-of-touch, egotistical Koshi.? A morning TV presenter as President? I feel sorry for Port's coach.

What about the current team? They have a great interceptor in Alir, a good key forward in Dixon, wild-cards in Georgiades and Rioli, some inside bulls in Wines and Powell-Pepper, some elite young talent with Butters, Rozee and Horne-Francis. They were excellent at home against a highly-touted Brisbane, doing the Lions down and by doing so, proving their upper level is elite. And yet, and yet, I still don't quite know what they are. I suppose another way of looking at it is that they're pretty good at everything. They look like they'll be battling with a bunch of teams for a top-four spot.

This game then is going to ask a few more questions of us: Will McStay actually be the player we hope? He was great in the pre-season but his performance against Geelong was disappointing. Will the Cox/Cameron duo continue to fight the good fight? They were solid against Geelong but here they should be better, before the real tests come. How will the backline go without Howe? Will our better clearance work hold steady?

The Washup

The game's at the MCG, we're in stellar form, and the Power are surging but can we trust them? About as much as we can trust Kreepy Koshi and Shock-Jock Kane.

The Pies by 13 points!

WHE and Lipinski are the best two-way runners in the team (and both usually v.good kicks of the footy). That two-way running power is vital.

WHE was starting to slide down the pecking order but with Lippa injured, I doubt we’ll drop WHE.

WHE one of the first picked.
Buckley did it and so is McRae.

FWIW, he was never in the "bests" team during pre-season.. until Lippa went down. Was playing on the HB line, and you can't see who he would have replaced. But then, Lippa goes down, and they swap him back to HF, so that clearly was tactical because we had to replace an almost like for like to a degree. But yes, he was falling down the pecking order pre Lippa injury, it was starting to become clear this pre-season. But for now.. gets a reprieve.

WHE brings a lot to this team.
Top 5 fastest in AFL and runs 15km average.
A role player that coaches love.

he does have a lot of attributes that coaches do love. But his change of position early on probably didn't bode well for him, but he lives to fight another day.

According to ?????

Might squeeze into the top 5 at the club, maybe, but in the league?
Dunno mate. Got this from MMM
It doesn't have the date.
He's extremely fast either way.

The fastest players in the competition

1. Eric Hipwood (Brisbane) - 35.7 kilometres per hour

2. Ethan Hughes (Fremantle) - 35.6 kilometres per hour

3. Gary Rohan (Sydney) - 35.3 kilometres per hour

4. Connor Menadue (Richmond) - 35.0 kilometres per hour

5. Will Hoskin-Elliott (Collingwood) - 34.9 kilometres per hour

He was... in 2017

I love WHE but cant see him being quicker than Hill, Markov, McReery, Elliot, Howe, Moore the list goes on
Not many players in the above 34kmh mark. 34.9 impressive.
Has he slowed down? Who knows.
His running is elite and he has endurance.

He's dropped to the 32-33 range, but is still quick.

Would easily be in the top 5 for distance covered I'd imagine and comfortably the fastest of that top 5.

When the ball is in transition watch his running on the opposite wing, it is elite and he is a freak.

WHE wouldn't be close to be being one of the first picked each week.

He's not part of our regular defensive group, he doesn't play a major role when it comes to midfielders who rotate through the centre circle and with the addition of McStay and Hill he's now up against more forward options.

In reality his influence has been on a downward trajectory from his career high season in 2018 and he will be one of those under the most pressure week on week from the likes of a developing McInnes, a specialist forward in Ginnivan and most definitely Lipinski if he successfully recovers.

If you think WHE is one of the first picked please nominate all those Collingwood players he's always selected well ahead of. Looking at last weeks nominated starting 18 (which he was a part of) I doubt many would consider him more important to the structure of the team than any of the 4 players listed on the interchange let alone before they even consider the other 17 names.

Given the jack of all trades role he fills as that 6th to 8th best option in defence, midfield or attack in any one week it's probably only apt his place in the side will be under pressure from those players who while they mightn't be as versatile might be able to play a singular position at a higher standard.

Ginnivan for one kicked more goals in 2022 than WHE did across the entire 20-22 period.

Agree. I think there are some roles that are almost impossible for us punters to assess and WHE is likely one of those. No one on the board can assess our game plan and individual player roles because no one can access that information.

Players in roles sacrificial roles will always be under estimated. Blair was a.classic in his day and WHE appears to be that now. Those types are usually greatly appreciated by coaches and teammates even if questions are raised on the outside.

Wont surprise me if he does get tipped out this year but I wouldnt count on it.. Whenever that does happen Fly will do it with a heavy heart because he knows the power of unrewarded work WHE does for him.

Lot of everyday wisdom in this GC

As we journeymen trudge to work today - under-appreciated and unloved - be proud

A serious charge to which I plead not guilty

Maybe that was it then. Either way, he was a lot better from midway through the 2nd from what i remember and I'd be giving him another week.
Weird opinion that staying away from the ball = better, but each to their own I guess.

Everyone seems to think Frampton is a walk up start this week, but I hardly see him as a like-for-like with Howe.

The Pies love to play a zone defence which his highly dynamic, and from what I saw from Frampton in the preseason and at the Crows (when he managed to get a game) was that he’s far from that dynamic type.

I hope that if he is included, which he probably will be, that he doesn’t slow the transition of the footy from back half to front half.

Keen to hear if I’m the only one that feels this way? Honestly thought we defended unbelievably well after Howe went down, with great team defence - the way Murph and Moore left their men at the perfect times and read the flight of the ball was awesome.

Can definitely see Billy getting exposed by Dixon at times. Hopefully I’m wrong.
Frampton will play. Fly confirmed yesterday. And Moore will be playing on Dixon. It’s pretty likely that Frampton will be playing a third tall/intercept role, similar to Howe, with Murphy remaining the second tall defender.

Kidding yourself. The only reason he was in the 22 last week was because of the unavailability of Lippa and Ginni. Saying he’s one of the first picked is absolute nonsense.

No idea where this data is obtained but given Menadue no longer plays, it seems outdated.

A lot will come down to whether we can cover his running. WHE, Noble and Crisp are our 3 blokes who can cover big kms and also turn on the jets. That level of running is valuable and rare.
