And there you go -- in the preview last week, I suggested there were lots of questions to be answered about the Mighty Magpies. The game against Geelong has answered almost all of them. Our clearance work is better thanks to Mitchell. Bobby Hill will make an impact. Our game plan holds up and is well suited to our players, and it holds up even under severe pressure. Jordan DeGoey is likely to to rise to his talent level and dominate the competition. Most importantly -- we are one of the best teams in the comp. Yes, yes, it's only one game in a long season, but it was enough evidence for me. Let's bask in the glory a little.

Still, there was one huge downer during the stellar night. The greatest mark the game has seen, Jeremy Howe, flew kamikaze-style into a spoil. He shot through the air horizontally, like a missile, and when he crashed do the ground he shattered his arm. This is a heavy blow. Howe has defied age. He leaps like a cat, he possesses incredible pace, he intercepts to start shredding counterattacks with his two-sided elite disposal. He helps organise us with his onfield leadership. We can only hope he's back before too long.

Which means.... step up Billy Frampton (sorry Kelly, I've given up on you for the moment). Murphy takes Howe's more intercepting role and Frampton takes Murphy's more lockdown one.

We still have enviable depth which will hold us in good stead for a while yet.

Opponents: The Power

The Power are a strange team. A newcomer to the competition, there's no traditional hate between us. I don't harbour long-held vendettas against them for rodent-like, deceitful, morally repugnant, behaviour (yes Carlton, I'm pointing the bone at you). But they do seem to possess some odious personalities. Kane Cornes is a professional stirrer, a kind of shock jock of football, minus the politics. I hated him as a player, but now he's more like an annoyance, the buzzing of a mosquito in my ear at night. And their President, the loathsome, middle-brow, out-of-touch, egotistical Koshi.? A morning TV presenter as President? I feel sorry for Port's coach.

What about the current team? They have a great interceptor in Alir, a good key forward in Dixon, wild-cards in Georgiades and Rioli, some inside bulls in Wines and Powell-Pepper, some elite young talent with Butters, Rozee and Horne-Francis. They were excellent at home against a highly-touted Brisbane, doing the Lions down and by doing so, proving their upper level is elite. And yet, and yet, I still don't quite know what they are. I suppose another way of looking at it is that they're pretty good at everything. They look like they'll be battling with a bunch of teams for a top-four spot.

This game then is going to ask a few more questions of us: Will McStay actually be the player we hope? He was great in the pre-season but his performance against Geelong was disappointing. Will the Cox/Cameron duo continue to fight the good fight? They were solid against Geelong but here they should be better, before the real tests come. How will the backline go without Howe? Will our better clearance work hold steady?

The Washup

The game's at the MCG, we're in stellar form, and the Power are surging but can we trust them? About as much as we can trust Kreepy Koshi and Shock-Jock Kane.

Surely we're not falling for the Port home game win against a Brisbane side who can s**t themselves away from home. Last nights win was powerful, against the best side in the comp, we ran all over them and looked a class above. We will smash port next week
It'll be a breakneck speed game. Looking forward to it.

Smash? A win would be nice.

Well, we gotta have a look at Frammers sooner or later.

I just wish he’d had a few more games in the twos to learn the game plan first.

Perhaps he’ll fire up against his old club.
Perhaps he’ll be a potato.

I'm glad we have the option of bringing in a 200 cm defender after losing Howe. Last year we'd have to rely on Maynard and Murphy to play tall.

Frampton's best role is playing the role Howe plays and not so much a big forward shut down defender. He has only moved to defence in the last year so hopefully he can one day develop in to a key defender that doesn't look horrible or get embarrassed by every key forward.

Last season we wouldn't have had any one to come in for Howe and play his role but Frampton should do well enough to cover Howe.

Agreed, this is one way we increase our intercept marking which was pretty poor on Friday.

I never feel comfortable playing Port.

I have no doubt that if I’d been born in Adelaide, instead of Abbotsford, they would have been my team. And Port fans display all the annoying fan stereotypes that I secretly admire and strive to achieve.

Back to the team - JHF was just ‘wow’ yesterday. A highly impactful and influential performance from a second year player. The hype was real.

So Fly and I will worry all week about him in the lead up to our 24 point win.😍

There are some players more suited to sub than others.
Ones that bring versatility and allow coverage of multiple positions. And those that can bring impact.
Carmichael is a good example of a fringe player who is a great sub option. Maybe Kreuger and soon Allan.
Players like WHE or Noble don’t bring that to the same extent that should either be selected in their rightful position or left as an emergency.

Right now, Carmichael is just about our perfect sub.

But players need game time. You can’t park em there every week.

I think people are right that he is somewhat rated, but I'm concerned that we need to make the "hard" decision to move on from him as a starter if we are going to win a flag.

I see him run and link sometimes.

I don't see him break lines with speed.

I see him occasionally drop forward and kick a goal.

I see him chase and try in vain to pressure when the opposition has the ball.

I see tackles than seldom stick.

I see him lose most 1:1s including when his man runs forward.

What I really struggle with is the turnovers and clangers that often lead to goals against and if we are on a break, they can also be 12 point turnarounds.

The clangers kill our structure quicker than anything.

What's the point of in a link man who is the weakest link?

you could be describing Sidebottom here as well

Noble was amongst our best yesterday and our best defender. Ain’t getting dropped any time soon and if he is, he will be fine as a sub as he can play wing as well. WHE too is very versatile and an ideal sub should he get dropped for Reef this week.

The other players you mention just have to wait. VFL hasn’t even started yet! We should be picking our best 23, not our best 22 plus the most versatile available player as sub.

I’m not suggesting for a moment Noble should be dropped.
He’s a must play.
I am using him as an example of a player there’s no point picking as sub.

And I’m saying you’re wrong. The sub should be the next best player on the list, possibly excluding rucks and specialist kpps. Noble would be an excellent sub and there’s lots of good arguments for the sub being experienced rather than a raw boned rookie given scant time to impress.

Carmichael just has to wait. I’m sure he doesn’t really want to be known as a soecialist sub either… it’s unfair on him.

WHE doesn't usually do many clangers.
The last 2 years he has.

He was averaging somewhere around 25 clangers per year (20-odd games) prior to 2021
2021 - 47 clangers for the year
2022 - 65 clangers for the year
2023 - started with 6 clangers for the first game

The trend doesn't bode well for him..

Out: Howe, WHE

In: Frampton, Reef

Keep WHE as the sub. He’s a useful utility who can play multiple positions, but on the back of his game on Friday (which ironically he accumulated far more ball than normal) he doesn’t deserve to be starting 22.

I don’t rate Port highly… they have their talent for sure… but I (rightly or wrongly) see them as a bottom 7-8 side at best.

The lions allowed Port 111 marks for the game… the control the lions conceded from which allowed Port to accumulate over 400 disposals for the game which then generated 65 inside 50s

So I’m placing the blame there on the lions for allowing port so much ball, and time and space to use it

However the power did win 47 clearances against a very good lions midfield… so this area will be critical. That being said the pies won the clearances against the Cats so we have the means to match them I believe

Some concern too about the loss of Howe and how the defence performs without him… I like Framptons recruitment but he is still a little green down back

Overall I think the pies will be too strong. Fly has got some great cohesion, resilience and belief amongst the boys

Out: Howe, WHE

I thought WHE did well to occupy good structural positions but the 10 turnovers were pretty poor.
I agree... It was a what if game for WHE. He got a lot of ball early and is usually a good user of the ball but unfortunately his new position had him in a position that his turnovers had maximum impact against us. He is not usually so poor with ball in hand. As has come the norm with WHE became, he mostly disappeared from the game after 1/4 time
