And there you go -- in the preview last week, I suggested there were lots of questions to be answered about the Mighty Magpies. The game against Geelong has answered almost all of them. Our clearance work is better thanks to Mitchell. Bobby Hill will make an impact. Our game plan holds up and is well suited to our players, and it holds up even under severe pressure. Jordan DeGoey is likely to to rise to his talent level and dominate the competition. Most importantly -- we are one of the best teams in the comp. Yes, yes, it's only one game in a long season, but it was enough evidence for me. Let's bask in the glory a little.

Still, there was one huge downer during the stellar night. The greatest mark the game has seen, Jeremy Howe, flew kamikaze-style into a spoil. He shot through the air horizontally, like a missile, and when he crashed do the ground he shattered his arm. This is a heavy blow. Howe has defied age. He leaps like a cat, he possesses incredible pace, he intercepts to start shredding counterattacks with his two-sided elite disposal. He helps organise us with his onfield leadership. We can only hope he's back before too long.

Which means.... step up Billy Frampton (sorry Kelly, I've given up on you for the moment). Murphy takes Howe's more intercepting role and Frampton takes Murphy's more lockdown one.

We still have enviable depth which will hold us in good stead for a while yet.

Opponents: The Power

The Power are a strange team. A newcomer to the competition, there's no traditional hate between us. I don't harbour long-held vendettas against them for rodent-like, deceitful, morally repugnant, behaviour (yes Carlton, I'm pointing the bone at you). But they do seem to possess some odious personalities. Kane Cornes is a professional stirrer, a kind of shock jock of football, minus the politics. I hated him as a player, but now he's more like an annoyance, the buzzing of a mosquito in my ear at night. And their President, the loathsome, middle-brow, out-of-touch, egotistical Koshi.? A morning TV presenter as President? I feel sorry for Port's coach.

What about the current team? They have a great interceptor in Alir, a good key forward in Dixon, wild-cards in Georgiades and Rioli, some inside bulls in Wines and Powell-Pepper, some elite young talent with Butters, Rozee and Horne-Francis. They were excellent at home against a highly-touted Brisbane, doing the Lions down and by doing so, proving their upper level is elite. And yet, and yet, I still don't quite know what they are. I suppose another way of looking at it is that they're pretty good at everything. They look like they'll be battling with a bunch of teams for a top-four spot.

This game then is going to ask a few more questions of us: Will McStay actually be the player we hope? He was great in the pre-season but his performance against Geelong was disappointing. Will the Cox/Cameron duo continue to fight the good fight? They were solid against Geelong but here they should be better, before the real tests come. How will the backline go without Howe? Will our better clearance work hold steady?

The Washup

The game's at the MCG, we're in stellar form, and the Power are surging but can we trust them? About as much as we can trust Kreepy Koshi and Shock-Jock Kane.

The Pies by 13 points!

Noble was amongst our best yesterday and our best defender. Ain’t getting dropped any time soon and if he is, he will be fine as a sub as he can play wing as well. WHE too is very versatile and an ideal sub should he get dropped for Reef this week.

The other players you mention just have to wait. VFL hasn’t even started yet! We should be picking our best 23, not our best 22 plus the most versatile available player as sub.
I agree but that pass to tuohy early should have had him on the LTI list

I'm not sure WHE could be dropped given he brutally outbodied Guthrie in a one on one in the final quarter. The hyphen may only just now be grasping his true brutish nature.

He played well enough and shouldn't be dropped because he miss kicked a couple. His kicking is definitely not his problem.

It should just be the Howe and Frampton change.

Serious question to the track watchers, can Reef play the full four quarters, has his tank improved?

he looks good to me, would hate to see him fade out when needed, played well coming on late. I think we might have a player and one with huge versatility and upside IMHO.

Let's be honest.

For the first 3 quarters last night our entire defensive structure was our weakest point and I'd be really disappointed if our coaches couldn't identify that and will be making tweaks over the coming weeks.

The good news is that I'm sure we started last year also leaking easy goals at times before gradually tightening up and finding a better balance between attack and defence.

The only variable is that Leppitsch was in charge of our defensive line last year and how Bolton goes in comparison is still to be known.
The defensive structure was poor. It also heavily relies on the wings & midfield to push back and fill gaps to stop their forwards leading into open space. We managed this on/off on Friday with our players at times getting to far ahead of the ball making it easy for the Cats to get out the back. This cost us in each of the games we played them last year. However the coaches responded quickly on Friday. Overall one on one I though they held their own or beat their opponent. The only defender who I though lowered their colours to an extent was IQ who seems to constantly slip or go to ground way to often

I’m not a track watcher, but I think playing as a relatively deep forward like he did on Friday, he should run out a game without any issues.

Played out both preseason games from memory.

I’m anticipating some teething issues with Frampton slotting into defence, however Murphy/Moore showed how good they are from a system point of view, especially that last quarter - their ability to leave their opponents and kill the contest was outstanding.

I see Frampton in that mould, as opposed to a one on one defender.

The only positive about the Howe injury is that it builds our depth in defence and gives Billy a solid 6-8 week crack

There are some players more suited to sub than others.
Ones that bring versatility and allow coverage of multiple positions. And those that can bring impact.
Carmichael is a good example of a fringe player who is a great sub option. Maybe Kreuger and soon Allan.
Players like WHE or Noble don’t bring that to the same extent that should either be selected in their rightful position or left as an emergency.

Right now, Carmichael is just about our perfect sub.

But players need game time. You can’t park em there every week.
I would argue WHE is the most versatile
He can play small or tall forward and back
Can play wing and has even rucked

So many watch certain players with a negative bias, looking to support their pre-existing views.
I can't like this post enough, the amount of neg for Murph and Hyphen is off the charts.

Sure Hyphen gave it up twice I think and Murph was a bit slow to start, his 2nd half was pretty good, left his man to make a possible goal saving spoil and hyphen gave us good link through the wings.

The way some on here carry on, you'd think they're plants from another team.

Hardly droppable.

If it is Frampton replacing Howe I almost prefer he do the intercept work, he’s longer and can kick. Good for rebounding, let Murphy do the defending.

Frampton was brought in for the HBF position to cover Nick.
Dean for FB. Most here disagree.
Markov as extra insurance on the HBF.
Once Dean went down they experimented with Frampton at FB.
He didn't do to badly there. 3 kicked against him vs Carlton.

WHE had 10 turnovers from 18 possessions so more than half the time he had the ball it was coughed up.
