And there you go -- in the preview last week, I suggested there were lots of questions to be answered about the Mighty Magpies. The game against Geelong has answered almost all of them. Our clearance work is better thanks to Mitchell. Bobby Hill will make an impact. Our game plan holds up and is well suited to our players, and it holds up even under severe pressure. Jordan DeGoey is likely to to rise to his talent level and dominate the competition. Most importantly -- we are one of the best teams in the comp. Yes, yes, it's only one game in a long season, but it was enough evidence for me. Let's bask in the glory a little.

Still, there was one huge downer during the stellar night. The greatest mark the game has seen, Jeremy Howe, flew kamikaze-style into a spoil. He shot through the air horizontally, like a missile, and when he crashed do the ground he shattered his arm. This is a heavy blow. Howe has defied age. He leaps like a cat, he possesses incredible pace, he intercepts to start shredding counterattacks with his two-sided elite disposal. He helps organise us with his onfield leadership. We can only hope he's back before too long.

Which means.... step up Billy Frampton (sorry Kelly, I've given up on you for the moment). Murphy takes Howe's more intercepting role and Frampton takes Murphy's more lockdown one.

We still have enviable depth which will hold us in good stead for a while yet.

Opponents: The Power

The Power are a strange team. A newcomer to the competition, there's no traditional hate between us. I don't harbour long-held vendettas against them for rodent-like, deceitful, morally repugnant, behaviour (yes Carlton, I'm pointing the bone at you). But they do seem to possess some odious personalities. Kane Cornes is a professional stirrer, a kind of shock jock of football, minus the politics. I hated him as a player, but now he's more like an annoyance, the buzzing of a mosquito in my ear at night. And their President, the loathsome, middle-brow, out-of-touch, egotistical Koshi.? A morning TV presenter as President? I feel sorry for Port's coach.

What about the current team? They have a great interceptor in Alir, a good key forward in Dixon, wild-cards in Georgiades and Rioli, some inside bulls in Wines and Powell-Pepper, some elite young talent with Butters, Rozee and Horne-Francis. They were excellent at home against a highly-touted Brisbane, doing the Lions down and by doing so, proving their upper level is elite. And yet, and yet, I still don't quite know what they are. I suppose another way of looking at it is that they're pretty good at everything. They look like they'll be battling with a bunch of teams for a top-four spot.

This game then is going to ask a few more questions of us: Will McStay actually be the player we hope? He was great in the pre-season but his performance against Geelong was disappointing. Will the Cox/Cameron duo continue to fight the good fight? They were solid against Geelong but here they should be better, before the real tests come. How will the backline go without Howe? Will our better clearance work hold steady?

The Washup

The game's at the MCG, we're in stellar form, and the Power are surging but can we trust them? About as much as we can trust Kreepy Koshi and Shock-Jock Kane.

The Pies by 13 points!

I think we'll probably try and avoid too much tinkering with how good we looked. Hence, WHE sticks in for another week at least.
OUT: Howe
IN: Billy
Agree and this will likely happen.
WHE is a good role player.
Didn't have his greatest game though.

WHE was poor to start, but thought he worked into the game. I didn't think Sidebottom was as bad as others, but he isn't going to be dropped either way. Howe the obvious out, but I'm not convinced Frampton is a straight swap. I wouldn't be surprised to see Markov come in for Howe, think the speed and flexibility of the backline suits Markov more than Frampton who probably seems more a replacement for someone like Moore.
Fly basically said Frampton would be replacing Howe at the presser.

Frampton was brought in for the HBF position to cover Nick.
Dean for FB. Most here disagree.
Markov as extra insurance on the HBF.
Once Dean went down they experimented with Frampton at FB.
He didn't do to badly there. 3 kicked against him vs Carlton.
That makes sense to me. I’d love to see Kelly with some of his old man’s aggression

When was Howie doing the pressers?

Last time we played Power Dixon was getting a lot of possession up the ground, would be happier to let that happen and concentrate of stopping Rozee, Georgiades and Marshall.

Wines and Powell-Pepper also ones to watch. Glad we don't have Boak, Gray and Motlop running up against us. Bruzzy has to just stop Rioli blatantly blocking him at contests.

Will be a fiery game I reckon. I hope our home ground advantage tips us across the line.

I never feel comfortable playing Port.

I have no doubt that if I’d been born in Adelaide, instead of Abbotsford, they would have been my team. And Port fans display all the annoying fan stereotypes that I secretly admire and strive to achieve.

Back to the team - JHF was just ‘wow’ yesterday. A highly impactful and influential performance from a second year player. The hype was real.

So Fly and I will worry all week about him in the lead up to our 24 point win.😍
Be nice if they turned up round one at their home ground. So much for the passion. Perfect day too.

If McStay can keep Allir busy then I think we can impose on them elsewhere. Will be MacPac's first challenge I suspect.

I can't like this post enough, the amount of neg for Murph and Hyphen is off the charts.

Sure Hyphen gave it up twice I think and Murph was a bit slow to start, his 2nd half was pretty good, left his man to make a possible goal saving spoil and hyphen gave us good link through the wings.

The way some on here carry on, you'd think they're plants from another team.

Hardly droppable.
WHE gave it up a lot more than twice. I’m usually one of his defenders, but he was terrible on Friday, particularly early when he got a lot of the ball, there’s not really any getting around it.

Fair enough, liability.

I doubt Fly will drop him though, I'd like him to given those turnovers.
I don’t think Fly will drop either and I didn’t think his game was as bad as the turnovers suggested but I think with Reef’s performances in the pre season and when coming on as the sub he needs to be rewarded with a game.

Do you have another KPD option to step up for Howe other than Frampton?
Will Kelly in theory.

And some swing men amongst the forwards if forced.
Darcy Cameron drops back in the hole to intercept well, too.

Also in theory Trey Ruscoe who wasn't terrible last time he was there. His form over pre-season has been underwhelming though and I'm not sure how far down the pecking order he is.

Interesting selection this week after a magnificent win against that cats. I don't see Frampton coming in replacing Howe - I think it might be Ruscoe who replaces Howe.

Unlikey to be any other changes given the performance on the weekend. WHE had some clangers for sure but that wont be enough for him to be dropped. I though Sidebottom had a down game - looked like he had lead in his boots - just didnt seem to cover the ground as he normally does.
