Checks.

Cats have signed "drink spiking victim" Ecky Stengle and spud Jack Henry to 5 year deals.

Holmes didn't want to sign with Geelol past his free agency year and you don't have anyone else young enough and/or good enough to warrant a long term deal. No wonder you lose so many finals.
why would he sign now when he'll command more when his contract is up?

It's good management by both club and player

Great management by Holmes. He can escape that sewer for big money half way through his career if he wants to. Not such great management by Geelol, to only have your best player tied up for 4 more years.

But I guess they know they can throw an about to be re-zoned land deal at him when they need to.

Poor buggers can't catch a break. All their good players demanding to leave the joint and you're left with an 8-year deal for Noah LOLta.

and what if Holmes doesn't come on? What if his hamstrings don't hold up? What if he ends up committing armed burglarie in the off season?

Smart for club, smart for player.

Enjoy 7 years of Balta at $800,000k :$

If those things happen then it will be smart by Geelong, dumb by Holmes.

But as he approaches free agency, if everything looks sound, what length of contract is he going to be offered by Geelong? other clubs will be offering him 7 year deals.

And the Cats would be th ones to talk about risky contracts. Every bloke who has turned 30 seems to get a 2-3 year extension until age 34. Dangerfield on big money has not played a full season since 2020. Hawkins, Touhy, the list goes on and on of players getting 1-2 years too many.

So I don't think Richmond will be too troubled over a big front ended contract for a key position player to the age of 32.

Congrats Noah, well played

You can tell oppo flogs are petrified of the Tigers building yet another dynasty team over the next few years...

🤣 🤦‍♂️ only dynasty you're building is a wooden spoon dynasty

...they are coming out of the woodwork desperately trying to get Richmond to change course

Richmond hierachy read the Bay? :$

Great move, as if he ever wants to leave, we'll get great picks because he is contracted.

More like nobody will take him on because of the cost

Dangerfield's not on big money.

Holmes will be extended a year before his contract finishes if that's his wish.

Offers will come, as they do for all players, and he will likely turn them down because he knows it's the best place to work in the league. Fewest hours required at the club, treated like an adult, well run organisation.

There aren't many key players who request trades. There's a reason for that.

Long contracts are stupid. Grundy, Franklin, Hopper, Balta, Naughton etc all prove it

Hopper Balta Naughton contracts haven't proved anthing yet.

Look no further than Richmond itself for a club who secured great players with long contracts, Martin and Lynch, and it worked out beautifully for everyone bar Geelol.

Saying Grundy or Franklin prove long contracts don't work is like saying Gary Rohan or Jack Steven or Shaun Higgins proves shorter contracts don't work.

Contracts don't mean shit now anyway. When he asks to be traded away 3 years in we can demand a bit more because he is a "required player."

Anyway, while he's not particularly good at either position, he has the ability to be put either forward or back and he is tall enough to cause a bit of a problem for the oppo.
