The Reserves cup the same year was a Gold Cup. Ross Smith held it aloft after a near 100pt win against the Bombers and said "We have the first, now for the big one" or words to that effect. It was 25+ years ago and a lot of brain cells have died since then.:)
Sorry, I got the quote wrong, Smith said "This is one, there's one more to come".

I found this short little video on You Tube.

I think the GF ended up as Smith's final game for North.:(

Did recovery in his own way!!!.....As a side note what exactly makes Laidley a "Legend"....just thinking out loud here,,,,I don't think she is in the AFL hall of fame as a legend, premiership player yes (probably in no small part due to Wayne) but plenty of other premiership players never get called a "Legend".....became a coach with highlight being a losing prelim???.......I think "Legend" is a bit fanciful!
It’s not an official title mate, it’s a word that a newspaper chose to get you to click.

This is such an off season hill to die on.

Another example of a successful reserves team winning the premiership bodes well for the firsts to have a chance at equal success from pressure coming from a level down, and then goes on to win said premiership.

Wow its almost as if investing into the VFL is...important?
its representitive of depth, no coincidence at all,

its representitive of depth, no coincidence at all,

I think the mistake is most conceive depth as a stacked best 22, with 2-4 as backup depth. Real depth is a near-whole VFL team waiting and willing to come up to the seniors if injuries hit.

Half the rub of a successful season is how you weather injuries when they do hit a campaign for a flag, Richmond managed this best in recent years on account of their depth, and its again no coincidence they had a successful VFL team which also won flags.

The last team to do this with such strength... Was Hawthorn during Clarkson's tenure. Their Box Hill Hawks contained a deep football list that won flags. Today, Melbourne do this quite efficiently but not as well as the other two. But their Casey Demons team isn't one to scoff at either.

Too many projects, journeyman VFL players and not enough pressure on the senior team is the main problem with our VFL team, considering we play down home at our real home ground, Arden St. Oval, I'd like to see us bring a more serious approach and honor to our club not just on the firsts list. I hope this is on Clarkson's agenda.

And then became an assistant coach to you-know-who at Hawthorn for seven years …

Actually I think he was captain/coach at Ainslie in ACTAFL for a year before going to Hawthorn. I'm pretty sure the tricolours won the premiership.
