Channel 7 news Adelaide reporting North v Brisbane in Mount Barker for the Afls version of magic round. Interesting choice if true.
beats anything the barossa could offer. nuri comes closest but frankly all the ovals up there aren't that great.

also wonder if the travel distance is a factor they included too. 33 km from adelaide to barker compared to adelaide to nuriootpa's 81 km. also nearly double the travel time - mt. barker is 30 compared to nuriootpa's 55 minutes.

definitely speaking this as someone who would never want to go back to the barossa, ever... :eyes:

It’s an additional Round. 11 Home Games. 11 Away Games. And a magic mushroom round game. :stern look

What is the point, so we can play on a cow paddock in the middle of nowhere?

Yeah? They are going to make money playing games out there?
I did wonder about this and I would love someone to explain the economics of this to me, in particular where the real value lies for South Australian taxpayers.

The SA Govt has pledged in excess of $10m for this year alone, of which NMFC (and all other clubs) get about 500k.
And we're playing at an oval where you'd struggle to fit 5k audience members, and all the games are free for club members.

By contrast, the Qld govt reckon they attracted about 30k people for their most recent NRL magic round, and that was a record breaker.

My back of the napkin assumption is that they'll squeeze 5-6 games at AO, with the expectation that the real money will be made from the interstate big teams, and the hope that the AFL will attract about 50k interstaters.
Then say each of those spectators spends on average 2 nights there, say with an average local expenditure of say $1k pp into the state economy.
If those numbers were ballpark, then take out $10m for the AFL and another $10m for associated costs of hosting the event, and there'd be a $30m net injection into the state economy.

SA state gov pays the AFL to host the magic round. Every ad break will be full of SA ads. The round will see plenty of people head over to watch the footy as well. The whole round is great big advertisement for S.A tourism
You can all stay at my house.
I’ll get a keg.

AFL fixture news: Carlton to replace Western Bulldogs in Good Friday match

The AFL will thrust Carlton into the Good Friday limelight next season in a bid to add some extra spice to the annual public holiday game at Marvel Stadium.
News Corp can reveal the Western Bulldogs have been dumped from the public holiday slot after routing the Kangaroos in their 2021-22 Good Friday battles.

While those two games have drawn crowds of 28,483 and 32,162, there are high hopes a Carlton versus North Melbourne game in Round 4 will draw a bigger crowd in 2023.

The Blues are hopeful of crashing into the top-four next season, helping break a decade-long finals drought after narrowly missing the eight following after a heartbreaking Round 23 loss to Collingwood.

The game on Friday, April 7, will also see the McKay twins, Harry (Carlton) and Ben (North Melbourne) lock horns and play each other under the roof.

Western Bulldogs wanted to retain the Good Friday game but have been replaced by Michael Voss’s men.

There will be huge broadcast interest in Carlton next year which should see the Blues given more prime time action including the prized Friday nights berths in 2023.

North Melbourne has worked hard to promote the Good Friday game but are determined to perform better in the marquee clash after 128 and 68-point defeats to the Bulldogs.

Alastair Clarkson has taken charge of the Kangaroos after a year off from coaching and is determined to clear his name amid the investigation into Hawthorn First Nations’ players between 2008-2016.

Once again it's the only marquee game in AFL history that seems to be aligned to any kind of performance based qualification.

And the media are happy to drive forward that narrative repeatedly.

It's actually been unfair on us and the dogs and saints, as if all have to jump through hoops to justify involvement.

Meanwhile Carlton saunter in for another AFL house handjob.

Are these any good? Asking for a friend...

God, this is bullshit. Carlton get re-given a game that they lost in the first place because they refused to put in the minimal effort to make it successful. They take it away from the Bulldogs who had been very good partners, visiting the kids in hospital and helping promote it.

So after 3 or 4 years the AFL have decided to make the fixture between North and Carlton... as both clubs originally requested. ****ing clowns.
