No that's a misinterpretation. Ben McKay was saying that George Wardlaw will play a half in the VFL this week.
"The club said last week he could be cleared to return this week and star free agent Ben McKay said on Saturday he was likely to play a half in the VFL this weekend."

Hmm, geez that's an ambiguous sentence.

To be fair, if you read the previous lines as well, and not just the one sentence, it's pretty clear

"..... and Wardlaw has finally ticked off his rehab after eight weeks of strengthening exercises on his body.

He had battled hamstring issues across his final junior year and had again suffered some issues across the summer.

Ben? Sheez? Caro retiring? Cornes in a sex scandal to end media career? I'll take any of those four.
Or maybe Cornes in a sex scandal with Caro that ends both their media careers?

Now that's a horrible image you'll all struggle to get out of your heads!!!

In my defence, I think the Herald Sun social media producer made the exact same mistake as me:

"Two young stars preparing to make their return to the Kangaroos lineup."

One of those stars obviously being McKay.

So here I am, clicking on the link in the tweet, naturally expecting the article to detail something about McKay's return.

When in fact there's nothing about him preparing to return at all, just his comments about contract negotiations.

As a fan, great news for the club to lock him away from now.
As a businessman though, if I was his agent, why would I extend after just one game? Surely his value will rise as the year progresses and you'd get a better deal. I don't see what the rush was. I wonder if as part of the contract, there are some bonus clauses like, if you extend early now, and this vote of confidence in the club then convinces other kids or players to extend, you'll be paid an additional amount.

The business side of the game fascinates me.
This is not spur of the moment after one game. The club and the player’s manager will have been working on this for weeks.

Doesn’t get sucked into the North pile-on like those over on Channel 9, either.

He’s gone in to bat for us plenty of times in the past year.
That’s because what he did to North and Brisbane come back to bite him on the arse . Hopefully just how the commentators are comparing Horne Francis to Buckley it will happen tho the sook .

No need for your defence, it's not super clear, and I wasn't being picky, and wish it was McKay.
If I had've cut and paste just one more sentence, it may have been apparent the 2nd of the "two young stars" referred to was TT maybe playing VFL this week as well....

The expectation is he will take the field alongside former top-10 pick Tarryn Thomas in round 1 of the VFL on Saturday.

Except that of course TT was playing in the VFL team last weekend for the practice match.
So he's only returning on Saturday in the same sense that Aaron Hall will be returning too.
Anyway, I'm not sure why I'm expending energy fact checking Herald Sun copy.

Lol nobody is melting Ligma, play on.

Thanks for biting again 😘

And all of the scenarios which people bring up will have been factored in. There will be many trigger points and incentives built in. Managers are well aware of value to us and also to our competitors. Harry will be well compensated and with his signature will come others as our rebuild goes on.

I personally find Bucks really boring to listen to, very monotone. No question he knows the game well but he's not got much personality.
But that analytical frame is probably needed in the commentary of the game.

Absolutely. We wanted this kid from pre draft and would have seen enough already in the pre season to be confident what we had - it's just that now the rest of the comp also knows.
