Herald Sun Footy Podcast: North Melbourne poses a compelling priority pick quandary

They’re battling injuries and a “lack of real talent”, but are the Kangaroos worse right now than Fitzroy? Check out the Herald Sun Footy Podcast for all the news, trade talk and media buzz

North Melbourne should “absolutely” be afforded a priority pick as they battle a situation more dire than that of Fitzroy, according to Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph.

Ralph joined the Herald Sun Footy Podcast to discuss the troubles of the flailing Roos, and what he believes would be a “compelling” case to league headquarters for a priority pick.

“They’re much worse than Fitzroy right now. Officially, the club is saying ‘we won’t contemplate it until the second half of the season, we hope to be able to win a string of four or five games … if we end up winning eight, of course we wouldn’t put that request in’,” he said.

“I think we all know how their season is going … they’ll scrounge one or two – they’re not going to win five (games).

“Their priority pick request will be absolutely compelling.”

Ralph said the worries for the club went far beyond the lengthy injury list.

“The worry right now is not just that they’ve got a lot of injuries or that Alastair Clarkson is distracted by the Hawthorn investigation,” he said.

“They just don’t have a lot of talent. What is even more worrying is that they’ve already traded out the picks that they got for their draft assistance in Darcy Tucker and (Griffin) Logue.

”There’s no way (with their current draft hand) they get back to the Geelongs and Richmonds and even Carltons of the world in terms of talent.

“I would think if you’re the AFL, you might potentially give them a mid first-rounder, or an end of first-rounder

“They need ways to get more talent, otherwise they’re in the doom and gloom forever.

“They’ve made significant mistakes all along ... and it adds up to a list that doesn’t have enough talent.”

He said that Hawthorn opting to cull its list and West Coast’s 2018 premiership glory meant assistance would be off the table for them, but that North Melbourne continually being “blown out of the water” had skewed the competition to be “17 teams and North Melbourne”.

“I don’t think the history matters (of whether they should get consecutive years of assistance),” Ralph said.

“What (they) would be looking at … is we can’t have teams that drag down the league like North Melbourne.

“Right now, they’re an impediment to the league. The league can say ‘suck it up, it’s your own fault’ … or (they can help). Give them the right package … elite picks that will actually help them climb up the ladder.”

It’s interesting to watch how the media works. I was going to comment last week that Ralph had suddenly appeared quite supportive of North. This really confirms it. I remember he used to knock us at every turn.

Mmm are we being scammed somehow lol . Or maybe we are that poorly even some of the media think we need help. The chopping and changing of our coaching group has been one of the key elements to our woes imo. Players just can’t get continuity.

Exactly what choice did we have?
I find his point that we "just don’t have a lot of talent" to be a strange piece of analysis.

I'd argue we have more elite talent than *. They don't have an LDU or a Sheezel.

We just don't have as many b- and c-graders as them.

What we need is one or two elite kids from the draft and then 5 or 6 solid role player types. Pick the eyes out of those who are struggling to get a game in their current team.

So Jy doesn’t know what it is? * me dead. I feel like I have to come down with a few of us in gronks and we will ****** tell these campaigners what it is over the fence during training. I’ll organise us ugly campaigners (my mates) to turn up to training and we’ll ******* let them know how ******* soft they are. ******* bullshit. HAVE A CRACK YOU *IN campaignerS
Yeah true story. Walk up to Cunners, or Cam. In fact walk up to Kane Turner. Even Curtis Taylor you wouldn't have it.

Better still walk up to Clarko or Todd.

Post your video leaning over the fence

You won't though

Like the wokey.you are 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

It's pretty clear that Port have dirty laundry and he is running interference.
He's probably the orchestrator - he's way too invested.
The Cornes' and Fabian probably go way back - I think their careers may have crossed over for a year or two.
Chad's an assistant there. Can see them all together working out how to get Jason to Port.

"Just go to North for a year then ask for a trade home.
No one will care - It's North, not Collingwood or Richmond. What are they going to do?
Just make sure they don't trade #1 to Adelaide, or else we're stuffed."

There's some psychological theory about criminals who get away with a crime wanting to be caught - either for the notoriety or built up guilt.
Like a murderer, returning to the crime scene and asking a cop what has happened.
I think Kane is showing these signs. He knows he's got away with something, and it's bursting out of him to tell someone.

I wonder if he saw ldu completely sit jhf on his arse?
Thanks you lot. Cos of this I had to listen to that...

Anyway jr - i reckon the reason he brought that up was because LDU sat him on his arse.

It’s an absolute lie we are paying Corr $700k per year.

Reports at the time:
“North Melbourne recruit Aidan Corr has reportedly signed a five-year deal worth $2.75 million”

Free agent compensation for GWS was pick after their 2nd rounder which is inline with that contract.

We would’ve heavily front loaded as well.

These are just inflated numbers as well to suit The 🌽’s narrative.

Perhaps a better analogy would be an arsonist wanting to become a fireman.

That is not what we got for releasing JHF. We also had to give up the number 1 pick this year as part of the trade.

I still think losing last years number 1 pick (given how good that player will be), and giving up this years number 1 pick, was way overs for what we got back in return.
The 2022 number one pick wasn't really given up. We gave GWS their choice of player but it's probably fair to assume that we knew who they were going to pick and that player was not on our radar.

Anyone saying we have talent is dreaming. We have maybe two or three at elite level to win a Flag.

The second or third tiers that Premiership teams need are not there

And 11 years….pfft

What about being one of three teams to not make a GF in 23 years!!!?

I always ask people how many in our 45 would really be an inviting prospect for another club.
Wouldn't be many

What this confirms is what we already know - he's saying this because the AFL want him to say this. They're doing what they usually do and starting to lay groundwork for the likely inevitable.

Cornes has been on the “release pay details” band wagon for a while. He exaggerates the figures to benefit his argument. “Well if the amounts aren’t right, tell us the right numbers”
It’s just such petty behavior.
