They are equivalent in that they’re a celebration of their respective national culture.

Why is this hard for you to understand or are you being deliberately obtuse?
they're not in any way equivalent. China has a national day in October, we are not celebrating that. Chinese New Year is their equivalent of Christmas. the fact that you're trying to draw parallels is humorous, concede you don't understand and move on (or just go back to talkback radio/writing letters to the Herald Sun).

credulous at best, you're desire to believe in
angels in the hearts of men
pull your head out of your hippie haze and give a listen
shouldn't have to say it all again
the universe is hostile, so impersonal
devour to survive, so it is, so it's always been
Cool. So if I come round to your house, beat the sh#t out of you and take all your stuff you'd just put it down to the way of the universe? Or would you fall back on some hippie leftie principle of law regarding possession and ownership?

Read what I wrote again. If you’re too daft to understand then I’ll try again: It’s Chinese culture that is being celebrated. Meanwhile Australian culture gets kicked to the curb only a couple of weeks earlier.

Now give yourself an uppercut.

So what is?

January 1? The federation of states?

Unfortunately it also marks the ratification of the White Australia policy, which would be next on the list....

Anzac Day? Then you gloss over the real meaning of that day.

I'm yet to hear of a good alternative which also has legitimate meaning to the inhabitants of this country for the last few hundred years.
It is a real problem with a mere 365 to choose from. I guess we stick with the one where we commenced their ritual slaughter. Can't say fairer than that!

No, you’re being obtuse as well.

That’s like saying: Americans don’t celebrate their culture on July 4; it’s the date that marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

FWIW, January 26 (1949) is also the date the Nationality and Citizenship Act became law, which codified Australians as citizens into the constitution.

Lunar New Year is celebrated by many cultures though, from East Asia all the way to the Middle East. 2023 must have been a fantastic year for you that the idea of a new year on the Lunar Calendar made you so upset.

We rejected the White Australia policy over half a century ago. The same federation that started on Jan 1st 1901 did that. Its not a thing any more.

Australia became a legally independent state (ironically still with a foreign head) on March 3 1986.

The only reason that date isn't meaningful is cos no ones spent the time and effort brainwashing the country into making it a meaningful date the way Howard did with NSW prison day. That's easily fixed over five years with modern social media algorithms.

Australian culture? No. It was a statement saying we should reconsider our national day. A day which is being respected by fewer and fewer people.as a day which unifies all people, it has failed. If it ever succeeded. So it’s done.

You can emote all over the internet, but they are your feelings.

Enough with this hyperbolic rubbish about kicking Australian culture to the curb. They are your emotions and the club is not obligated to appeal to your feelings.

You can still wave your flags and all that but the club is within its rights to advocate for another day.

If you think Australia Day is Jan 26 because of the the Citizenship Act you are kidding yourself. Nobody had even heard of it a few years ago.
So much being banted about ….geez we as a nation didn’t start to recognise it as a National holiday until 1994…
Yep for those loosing their collective minds this item from Maccas has been around longer.

Can’t help but 😂 when people get fired up about this long traditional National Holiday……..

Also the term Australia Day was first celebrated in 1915 in July…

Plus this article gives some background as to how it’s changed over the yearsright up to today…..

should we look at an alternative if it’s causing distress …as a civilised society ( and l do wonder if we are sometimes ) would should be able to debate and make changes/ suggestions or leave as is …...without reverting to petty name calling / abuse ect….to any viewpoint that is valid and promoting decent debate/discussion on this topic.

but personally lm over the groups who say it’s was always this date followed by reams of vile / petty behaviour….when a short few minutes researching our history clearly shows it wasn’t always the case..

Yes let's try to find a day on the calendar when a mass atrocity wasn't committed against the indigenous population. The fact that it might not be as easy as it should be is perhaps a part of the problem.

PS I’m not saying you don’t have brains, just that this quote best articulates the problem with presentism.

at least they weren't commiting infanticide due to starvation. they had agriculture, medicine, an economy that could support a vast population, an army that could defend and expand the empire, literature, education etc etc....but yea, i'm sure when the aboriginals sat down after they invented the first steam engine 60,000 years ago, they did the calculations on their cave walls and forecasted that they would have a better way of life continuing down the hunter gather lifestyle. :tearsofjoy:

You might want to ask the Irish about that

And on that note...

Yep, I think I'm about done with this conversation. I made a comment about judging societies by their weaponry. Old Mate responded by quoting Tool Lyrics which called me a Hippie and saying the world had always been ruled by survival of the strongest. I made a hypothetical metaphor trying to point out the hypocrisy of said comment, and you've thrown back Captain Kirk calling me brainless.

While Jerk Off is obviously the best tool song I think the lyrics of Invincible are very appropriate in the context of what this thread has become.
