First Semi Final - At Home vs the Bombers

Hey Wazzas, welcome to the semi final edition of the weekly review. And boy what a week it was!

Thanks to the Guy Fawkes episode we encountered in the qualifying final against the Royals, we used up the Get Out Of Jail Free card we earned from our minor premiership and hosted the Baghdad Bombers in what was our final home game for the season. It was pretty standard fare from our neighbours - the initial bluster, some beer chat, a lot of reminiscing between the visitors and the CursingFijian we liberated, a touch of 'be betterness', a bunch of music videos, a Brisbane Bears pic and a bunch of "arna Baghdad" stuff. And hey, it was bantered in good spirits, particularly when a wider comparison is made.

We got to the game on the Sunday and after the after the visitors kicked the first four goals in the first half of the first quarter it felt as if we were going to get done dirty. For the next quarter and a half the margin stayed around the 3-4 goal mark, and it looked like the straight sets exit was on the cards. Then The Filth Wizard got to work, kicking four goals (including three in the final quarter), Piggy Smalls booted two in a row to give us the lead near three quarter time and a ten goal to three second half saw us pull away to end up 19 points to the good by the time the fat lady started warbling.

The win leaves us with two more steps before the #Flagwazzas dream becomes reality, with the penultimate step being a date with the Wondders in a preliminary final.

In wet conditions, it was a pretty even spread of performances that propelled us to victory. Standouts included TheInjuryFactory (23 disposals/4 marks/2 tackles), pantskyle (15 disposals/3 tackles/3 hitouts/3 goals), The Filth Wizard (4 goals), Piggy Smalls (3 goals), Snuffaluphagus (18 disposals/6 marks), SBYM (17 disposals/7 marks) and oldmate (14 disposals/6 tackles/6 frees for/1 goal), but it was a true team performance. Even Dinsdale sacrificed his stat line by acting as a decoy.

Second Preliminary Final - Away vs the Wonders

Alright Wazzas, let's get this over with.

After our semi final victory against the Bombers, we made it to our first preliminary final since season 31 and made the trip to the Colosseum to face the West Coasters hoping to break the longest active Grand Final appearance drought of sixteen (16) seasons.

The aforementioned semi final week was pretty much the reverse of the preliminary week. It began with being asked to provide some fake bravado to the OP, and true to form I used 1000 words when 50 could have done the job. The hosts continued with the fake bravado for the duration of the week (which is their one wood let's be honest) as opposed to starting out that way before settling into a mutually agreeable groove. Some things just aren't meant to interact, a bit like ships that pass in the night I guess.

But before too long it was game day, where it was glory or death for both sides. TheInjuryFactory kicked the first goal of the game to give us the lead. Then-

and the final siren sounded. The Wonders did the walk of shame with the sim towards a Grand Final, while #Flagwazzas was on hold for another season.

TheInjuryFactory led the way again, continuing his recent form with a 17 disposal/2 tackle/2 goal effort. His fellow centreline compatriots in spudmaster (17 disposals/3 marks/2 tackles/1 goal) & Agent93 (16 disposals/6 marks/1 goal) also did well. pantskyle (17 disposals/13 hitouts/1 goal) outplayed around the ground a ruck deemed worthy by the short-sighted & ham-fisted committee of All-SFA honours, Mesc came off the bench to boot two majors from two kicks and the rover did a bit of roving.





Here's the takeaways from the onfield stats over the season:

• Raveneyes remains the most capped Warrior, while Freofalcon is closing on second spot;
• The Filth Wizard overtook Moo to become the player with the most SFA games played, while pantskyle is closing on second spot;
• pants unsurprisingly had the most hitouts, with five others registering taps;
• pants also had the most overall kicks for the season with the fast finishing TheInjuryFactory two kicks behind;
• Agent93 was the Greg Williams of Coney Island this season with the most handballs, six more than spudmaster who had the highest average handballs per game thanks to his early season suspension;
• Speaking of averages, the one game that The Half Back played was decent enough to see him lead the averages in kicks, marks, disposals, frees against, DT points and Exie things;
• The most disposals in the season overall were disposed of by TheInjuryFactory who was 17 clear of pants. Eight people averaged more than 15 disposals a game (A93, Dinsdale , Lord_Flashheart , pants, spud, Halfy, TIF & Bob) while four averaged over 20;
• Rovers tackle and get free kicks, which I did this season to lead the tackles, frees for and had the highest FK differential;
• TIF conceded the most frees, with A93 & I not far behind;
• The lowest free kick differential came from Purple7x08_24 who conceded 11 more than he received while Mofra Freofalcon & CursingFijian were close;
• The Filth Wizard had a strong run of goal kicking form in the back end of the season to cement his status as the highest goal kicker (and point kicker) for the season. Overall we had 13 players reach double figures in a potent attack (Filthy, Piggy Smalls , FootyGuy13 , TIF, Purple, Reginald Perrin , pants, the Fijian, Dinsdale, toxic, Falc & I);
• Filthy (58 goals), Piggy (32), Guy (26), TIF (21), Purple & Reg (20 each) all kicked 20 goals or more this season which is bloody outstanding;
• The point that Raveneyes kicked in the prelim cost him a 100% scoring accuracy, pushing him down to third place on 80% (4.1). Snuffaluphagus was the only one to make 100% from his one goal, while TIF's 81% (21.5) came in second;
• pants led all comers in DT points from TIF and spud, while another five players (A93, the Fijian, Dins, Purple & Bob) made a grand;
• Finally the Exie things. TIF got the most of those, with another nine people (A93, the Fijian, Dins, Guy, pants, Purple, Snuff, spud & Bob) getting more than a thousand of them.

Key points from our posting stats over the season are:

• We had 25 Wazzas that participated in match threads over the course of the season with an average of just under 18 people per week, who posted on average a tick under 25 times a week;
• 14 people posted more than 10 times a week on average, with five of those averaging more than 30 posts;
• We had the majority of posts in 13 of 19 match threads, which shows that we don't need no steenkin' opposition to shitpost.

Although I'm a huge believer in quality over quantity, it's great to see that we were a really active and engaged team over the season and that made this season perhaps the most enjoyable in my time in the SFA!

Awards Season​

We've now hit Awards Season again, which has kicked off with the presentation of the All-SFA team. We had two people selected with TheInjuryFactory picked on the wing for his sixth selection, and FootyGuy13 who not only made the team for the first time on a half forward flank but was named the All-SFA Vice Captain! Mazel tov gents!

Well done also to our other nominees in pantskyle spudmaster and CursingFijian for having an outstanding season. While you were all blatantly robbed of external validation, rest assured in the knowledge that your performances were recognised here at Coney Island.

From there we have:

• Mobbs Medal for best qooty player as determined by the sim, so we'll probably get done dirty again,
• The beez trophy for the board's MVP, TIF's the reigning holder and is a shot to take home a third title while spudmaster and FootyGuy13 are a decent chance to make the top 20,
• The SFA Hall of Fame will be in there, where we have Agent93 nominated as an inductee and both The Filth Wizard & Frankston Rover nominated for elevation to Immortal status,
• Some other awards like the TFLUA-Tiger award for best player as determined by the Committee, the Frankston Rover Award for outstanding contribution to the SFA, the Golden Pants, the Golden Shittruck, and the rookie ones,
• Then we'll have the Frankston Rover Medal for the best performing Warrior of the season.
