Correct me if I'm wrong but Doesnt Tasmania take tax money from the mainland?

Most national businesses are run from Melbourne or Sydney, so they take profits from other states.

All states benefit from the Iron ore, gas & coal taken from mainly WA & Qld.

SA, Tas, NT, Act & Qld receive more GST than they contribute.

So Tas gives & takes, like others do.

So you're saying I'm right, Tasmania takes many many millions of dollars from the mainland?

So I am right and Tasmania take a huge amount from the mainland, thanks.

But please keep playing the victim card because clubs play in Tasmania and bring tourists...

Tasmanians feel very entitled to the money from the mainland.

1. We live in the Commonwealth of Australia- which was voted in by all the separate colonies 120 years ago. They agreed then, as nearly all others agree now, that we are all better off by being a united nation (beneficial & connected laws, economy, no customs etc. borders, free movement of people between states, united & more efffective defense, immigration, customs, & foreign policy etc.).

This thread is about AF in Tasmania, & whether it should have its own team. Your Federal taxation comments are not relevant here.

G. Mclachlan has said recently (& Demetriou in 2008 & 2019), paraphrasing, that when expansion occurs next, Tasmania will probably be the next team to join. Former AFL CEO R. Oakley said in 2019 Tasmania deserves to join the AFL," The game can afford it. It's the right thing to do, it would be well accepted in the football community".
(I assume their comments are on the basis that a Tas. team is financially sustainable ie without requiring further funding from the AFL that other heartland teams obtain).

Tas. is overrepresented in the AFL Team Of The Century, & the AFL Hall Of Fame.

Despite Tasmania now having a bigger population cf previous decades, Draft nos. have shrank considerably (quantity & quality of players) in the last decade.
It is AF, the AFL, & the fans of the AFL, that are the real "victims" of the disastrous decline in Tasmanian GR & elite AF- due to VFL/AFL neglect.

Tas. has very much "more than paid its way" in AF, by feeding the VFL/AFL with dozens of champions; & many great & good players.

2. Further to my post #1645, about the evidence given in the Tas. Leg. Council, Committee Member Finch (possibly exasperated at T. Squires' "uncertainty") returned to the issue of the allegedly "unknown" impact in Tas. on GR AF there, if it had its own team, posed again this question to AFL Tas. CEO T. Squires (pg 17)

"...if we were able to achieve an AFL team in Tasmania? How do you think this would impact on the work you are trying to do with AFL Tasmania (ie promote GR AF in Tas., & the elite pathway-s my words)?

Squires said "Again it is hard for me to speculate exactly because it has not happened before and I do not have the statistics".
More BS from Squires.

I hope you did a lot of stretching before that impressive display of mental gymnastics.

What are you trying to imply?
I was just putting some facts to the statements by some posters on money flowing across and around between the states in the federation.
agree this isnt the thread tho to take it any further

You think so?

I didn't see any attempt to discuss the issue or any relevance to the AFL, or the indeed the topic itself. ie A Tasmanian team in the AFL.

Just a lazy effort at trolling.

Otherwise their would have been some attempt to answer questions as to why he made the comments in the first place.
Yeah I know what you mean i did think it was a little rich a Gold Coast supporter implying somebody else was living of handouts considering how much they have been given buy the afl I also couldn’t be bothered sending a hundred posts back and forward with western Australians listening to them crap on how they keep the whole country afloat 😂

AFL Distributions

  • Gold Coast - $23,696,768
  • Brisbane - $23,609,188
  • GWS - $23,234,214
  • St Kilda - $20,539,315

Anyway. Notwithstanding facts, i am on record saying i want tassie.

I want all existing teams. The league is rich enough to support teams that need support and things move in cycles.

I want a league of 19 teams with a bye each week and a home and away season of 19 games (being everyone once and a main rival twice) with home games one year flipped the following year so no situations where you dont have a game at home v a team for years and years.

i want teams to play home games at their home.
etc etc

i just wish they’d get on with it (tassie)

1. SEN Melb. Radio G. Lyon & T. Watson 5.2.20

Lyon said to G. Mc Lachlan

"Will we have a full time team in Tasmania within 5 years? Nick Riewoldt feels compelled to think that there is".
McLachlan replied "Within 5 years, I think is unlikely...but there is a report coming out, in the Tasmanian government, within 2 to 3 weeks. I don't want to play into that. We will await the report from the government. There are challenges down there, but they are a great football state".

(Go to Lyon Watson program, 5.2- then go to "G. McLachlan On SEN Breakfast"; then go to 12 minutes 10 seconds mark to 13 minute 15 sec.)

Later in the program, after McLachlan left the interview, Lyon said to Watson, paraphrasing

"I am certain Tasmania will play a bigger part in the AFL ...whether it's their own team, or a relocated team...".
Lyon did not elaborate further. To a later listener who rang in, Lyon said he "I don't think Tasmania could have their own team within 5 years for logistical reasons".
(Within 5 years = a team starting in 2025, or earlier)

EDIT:

"Relocated" is probably loose talk.
GC is certainly safe, & huge pop. area, GR AF is booming there, & it will eventually become competitive. NMFC will never leave Melb., it is financially sound. No other team would relocate. Tasmanians only want their own team.

On 12.6.1919, Dwayne Russell said "We now know for certain that the AFL will eventually have a Tasmanian team...by as early as 2022, but by 2026 at the latest"- see my post#874 above.

On 26.5.19.19 (& other times) NMFC Chairman B. Buckley said NM has no intention to play more than 4 games pa in Tasmania; & that Melb. would always be their home base.

2. The AFL in 2020 will be entering into negotiations with the Tas. govt.
The AFL will want to get the best deal possible for the AFL ie a guaranteed promise of permanent & significant Tas. govt. funding for the new team, that it will be financially self sustaining (NO AFL bail-outs). Probably non-negotiable.

The AFL probably will:-

. play "hard ball" with the Tas. govt.

. be aloof, & not want to be seen as "too enthusiastic" for a new team

. argue (untruthfully) a new team cant be "rushed" by 2025. And that a 19th team is very "problematic"/dilute the average skill levels etc.

. insist on measurable, gradual improvements/competitiveness ("the building blocks") in the full time U18 Tas. NAB League team, & Tas. VFL team- before a Tas. team enters as the 19th team. And better Draft nos. before entry- previously said a new team should start with at least 10 Tasmanians. These are reasonable expectations by the AFL.

The AFL knows the Tas. govt. is almost desperate to get its own team, c.2025.

Conversely, the Tas. govt. also has a very strong hand.

. GR AF is a disaster in Tas., which is embarassing for the AFL (& its $8.8m pa executive team, whose mission is to "foster, promote & develop the Australian game of football")- but more importantly for the AFL, the Tas. recruitment goldmine has collapsed.

. The AFL deeply desires for the legendary Tas. VFL/AFL recruitment goldmine of champions & stars etc. to be revived- & the Tas. govt. is fully aware that the AFL has this deep desire. Both Demetriou & McLachlan have said recently, paraphrasing, "When expansion occurs next, Tasmania will probably be the next team to join". R.Oakley also stated Tasmania should join as the 19th team soon.

. Soccer & Basketball regd. GR player nos. are at record highs in Tas., whilst male Club AF nos. are in decline.

. It is almost certain a NBL team will be established in Tas. in few years.

. Public opinion in the AF community strongly feels that Tas. has been treated unfairly, & that Tas, should have its own team

. Strong Federal LNP & ALP political & financial support for a Tas. team- in a very tight (1 seat majority) Fed. Parliament.

. Creating a 19 team comp. will add 11 extra H & A games; & many more Thur. night prime time games:Very valuable for the AFL (c. 20m. extra pa, direct & indirect benefits).

These are the aces that place the Tas. govt. in a strong negotiating position (assuming its financial case shows a Tas. team will be financially sustainable):-

T. Johnson Baldock R. Murray Howell I. Stewart Lawrence Bonney Hart Sproule Hudson M. Walker Crosswell P.Jones M.Armstrong Sutton Conlan Wright Eade S. Clayton Greening Minton-Connel Cresswell Roach B & M Gale Lynch R. Robertson C. Robertson B. Green Lovell Neal R. Shaw Paul Hudson J. Mc Carthy Pritchard Febey P. Williams A. Fletcher Barwick D. Grant Atkins B & J Rawlings Holland Neitz G. Lyon M.Richardson N & J Riewoldt B. Brown J. Howe Burchall M. Robinson Casboult

Significant Federal LNP funding for new/updated Hobart & Launny stadia, & Tas. having 12 Senators in a very tight Fed. Parliament (& marginal Tas. Fed. LH seats) are also strong factors in favour of the Tas. govt.

I would say 10 years sounds more likely,he doesn't seem keen on 5 years at all.

Can, kicking, road.

I think Gutwein, the new Premier, will be after something to boost his standing. This would be it. I can't see him waiting 10years or more without making a stand on it.

In the short term I recon they'd want better games, or pay less for the garbage the AFL are serving up currently.

Think you are being too sensitive, I was with you until I got what Billy ray was on about responding to the OP.

He is pro a Tas team & has been for a long time.
i am on record saying i want tassie.

The whole funding thing of a Tas team attracts lots of other agendas, see my suggestion that GST was not for here.

1. SEN Melb. Radio 5.2.20 D. Russell program

Russell said
" 6 to 7 months ago I was hearing they (Tas. Bid team- my words) were pretty happy with the numbers (financial sustainability of the 19th team- my words) they were going to provide to the AFL, and the AFL would look at those numbers, and the AFL would say 'Yes, we can make it work down there because you guys make it look like it will work' ".

(click on "Dwaynes World 5.2", then go to 16 minutes 20 secs. -16 mins. 55 secs)

If Russell's comments are correct, this indicates that the Bid team will present a case to the AFL that the 19th team is financially sustainable. Therefore, there will be minimal financial risk to the AFL.

It is, therefore, virtually certain that Tasmania will enter the AFL as the 19th team. It is the only way to restore the male GR club player nos. elite pathways & the traditional VFL/AFL recruitment gold mine of champions & stars etc.

2. The Mercury 6.2.20

Their article on G. McLachlan's "Tas. team unlikely before 2025" comments.

(Go to 6.2- then click on AFL Boss Remains Tight Lipped)

IMO the AFL will be "hard-ball" negotiators with the Tas. govt.- but the AFL realises a 19th team in Tas. is essential, & must occur soon. See post#1668 above.

3. Sam Hargreaves is a SEN Executive Producer & SEN AFL commentator- also comments on FoxFooty & AFLW games.

On SEN Radio 6.2.20 (filling in for G. Whateley) Hargreaves said to a person who called in (who was advocating a Tas. team asap)

"Tassie, we believe, will happen, but perhaps not in the next 5 years. It has to be a team that originates in Tasmania (ie not a relocated team- my words)".
He did not clarify who he was referring to, when he used the word "we".
