If Baker was such a great leader why wasnt he the captain of Richmond?
Picks in the teens were so valuable that North were offering their f1(likely top 5 pick) for even picks in the 20s, thats what we potentially gave up for Baker.
Baker isnt a star, hes a good role player. Leadership to the level that hes not even the captain of his old club cant be worth upgrading from a 20s pick to pick 14.

While I probably agree with you on trade value (which has been hammered across the board enough) I like the idea of two leaders per line, so in that sense filling that hole hopefully will work.

2018 we had JK/Lecca fwd, Shuey/Redden mid, Hurn/Gov back, Jetta playing an awesome role with the indigenous boys, with other mid tier leaders standing up around them by virtue of experience and the standards/talent in the system.

Currently we don't have those players with both experience in the system and that leadership combo to back it up on each line. Cripps I'd argue would be a leader a few years ago but probably doesn't have the onfield presence to back it up for 2025.

Allen/Waterman fwd tick

Mid and backline sorely need balancers in there to help straighten things up during games. I hope Baker/Duggan provide a combo to aggregate a leaders worth in each line they play which will be valuable no matter who the captain is. It's awkward though cause I'm less concerned about defence (where we hopefully have Gov for the season) but I also consider that the best position for both Baker and Duggan. Can see why they're training Graham exclusively midfield.

If one of them steps up to provide good stability in the midfield by playing a consistent role there then I back it in. Additionally if Yeo is ok after the injury scare and Ginbey/Hewett take charge around the club in that area then also all good. But still personally have that nervousness that we don't have a consistent midfield performer with that voice to marshall the troops + play the team role, can see the value in the Baker addition for leadership balance even if I'm nervous he and Duggan can make it work in an onfield balance sense.

That statement may be closer to the truth if you ignore Baker’s leadership qualities - which have now been officially recognised by the club with his addition to the leadership group.

It also assumes getting Baker had no influence on Graham joining us - who we got for SFA - and whose leadership has also been officially recognised by his addition to the leadership group.

Remember both guys are only 2-3 months older than Waterman and have multiple premierships.

But I guess those who only want to take a narrow view will never be happy.

Pretty obvious some posters have made up their minds on Baker simply based on what we paid. Which IMO was around the mark and fair. We paid the market rate for a pretty good player. One who many Tigers fans named one of their favourites.

We needed to rectify a hole in the list age wise and we did that bringing in three players. Baker, Owies and Graham. Two now in the leadership group.

We dont get handouts from the AFL so turned a single pick 3 into Bo Allen rated as a late top 10 talent, Baker, Owies and Gross. That is draft capital well spent people.

Theyve got Barrass, Scrimshaw and Battle.
All 3 prefer to be intercepting/spoiling rather than marking their man.

Sicliy has gotta either play small or someones going to have to move forward, with Sicily being the most likely to move.
It's a pity the loyal west coast fans will have to wait until 2026 to give Barrass the send off he truly deserved.
I can't wait for him to be exposed by Waterman and Allen.

What?

I dont think Baker could do anything that would "put egg on my face".
How exactly is he going to demonstrate such a high level of leadership to the general public to justify a huge overpay based on his playing ability?

Even if he comes out and wins a brownlow, that still wont justify his price as prior to this year he hasnt demonstrated anything to justify his price.
Just stop

I think their tall defenders are going to be less effective than they think, as none of them are amazing at 1 on 1 defensive work. Barrass let spuds like Ratagolea and Cox get hold of him in finals (resulting in us losing in both 2019 and 2020).

One definitely needs to move forward, as their KPF are absolutely abysmal. I really don't see theirs as a premiership list and still think they can miss the 8 if things don't click.

The dream result is we beat the Hawks and they miss finals.
