Corey wins Cats' B&F; Ablett runs second

Funny, not many Geelong fans posting rubbish last Tuesday were prepared to consider the same thing when they were busy denouncing Cooney as one of the worst Brownlow winners ever, and carrying on like pork chops because Ablett didn't win.

So the umpires don't have a clue because they dared not to rate Ablett best in the comp (with many Cats fans throwing up his MVP win as 'proof' he obviously is), yet your own club didn't rate his 2008 the best at Geelong? Hmmmph, silly umpires.

Dude, its pretty simple. The Brownlow is determined on 6 votes per game spread over every player in the game, and therefore only rewards the most outstanding players on any given day. Most club best and fairests (including Geelongs) involve a lot more votes to a lot more players per game (thus Corey's tally of 590 odd, Ablett 530 etc). As such, someone who is consistently in their team's top 5 or 6 players can rack up a lot of votes in a club Best and Fairest, but may actually fail to poll in the Brownlow at all. Missing games in this scenario makes it very difficult to win such an award.
Gary's season was the best I have seen by any player from any club for many, many years (I am biased, but I think many neutral observers will agree).
Cooney had an outstanding first half of the year and is a very fine player who looks like he still has improvement in him. I don't begrudge him his Brownlow - good on him. But the fact is he didn't have a whole lot of competition for votes at the Bulldogs (at least not in the smae way Geelong did), and I would seriously question if anyone but the most one-eyed Bulldogs supporters (or Geelong haters - of whom there seem to be quite a few here) rated his season as highly as Ablett's.

Narrow it down pisstroll,he's won the last 2 MVP awards.
Which one is supposedly "dodgy" ?
I guess a Hawks supporter would know about dodgy things [injun .....oh wait, not allowed to mention that]

Lol good post. It is funny how people forget about the thing you mentioned. People say its Karma we didn't win the GF yet are happy with a club like Hawthorn to win it. WCE also won a flag with all the crap that went on. Karma caught up with them.
Bitter.... yeah that the dodgy club had a better day.

By the way, I hope Bullies supporters don't take my last post as a personal attack on Cooney or your club. I think Cooney is an outstanding player who had an excellent season.

Dogs are an honest team who are only a short distance from really challenging (and I think we stole a lot of our very successful gameplan from you guys).

Bulldogs posters on Bigfooty are also, on the whole, very humble.

Congrats to Cooney on his Brownlow! A fantastic achievement from a rising star of the game.

I just don't appreciate the hate on here for Ablett (which, by and large, is not coming from the Bulldogs).

lol it's funny isn't it last week everyone thought the same thing about Geelong and having cocky supporters it seems that a lot of them have gone in to hiding it did take a Hawthorn supporter to announce who won the B&F at their club. :D

and then a hawthorn supporter to make a smartass comment it is irrelvent that ablett ran second well done to joel corey he had an awesome year

Meh, Cross beat Cooney in the B&F so to say Cooney didn't have any competition for votes is incorrect.

This illustrates my point perfectly. The Brownlow voting system tends to reward the more brilliant performers on any given day. Other voting systems which involve a broader spread of votes, such as the for the Geelong B&F (not familiar with the Bulldog's model), are more biased towards consistency and durability across a whole season.

I assume you would feel that Cooney probably had a more outstanding season than Cross?

I certainly think Gary was Geelongs standout this year, but Corey was consistently very good week-in, week-out and I don't think he missed at all through injury.

Some posters in this thread don't seem to understand the fact that different voting systems produce different results, and that this is not anomolous but merely a product of the approach.

Perhaps if you bothered looking on the Geelong board you would've noticed the live updates last night on the board. This thread wasn't started as an announcement as to who won it - it was a troll thread started by a Hawk moron.

I think most cat fans had no qualms about Ablett coming third in the brownlow. Had he have played more games, then there's probably no question he would have won.
I had no qualms with Hodge winning the Norm Smith. I thought he was outstanding and personified Hawthorn. Had Geelong of won, I'm sure the award would have gone to Junior.
No qualms either with Coirey winning the B&F. Consistent, gives his all, runs all days and led the competition with possessions. His tackling and one percenters are great also.

Have no qualms with people who choose to bag Ablett either. Only highlights their insecurities. Not his.
Well posted. The three most bagged footballers on bigfooty; Buddy, Yablett and Juddy. I love em all.

Corey was consistent and didn't miss any games, if I was a betting man I would have put money on him for the B&F. I think he won the Geelong board B&F here too which illustrates how highly rated he is by the both the fans and the club.

He isn't a flashy player, but considering Bartel was the only player in the whole league to get within 63 touches of Corey for the season then that to me indicates he is doing something right whether or not he got the best run with player every week, couldn't be happier for him.

I'm probably more sore about Bartel's raw deal in the awards this season then Ablett's truth be told, especially the Brownlow. Say what you want about Ablett, I wouldn't trade him for anyone or anything.

well obviously he didnt cry at the brownlow u wanka

Nice of you to have such a high opinion of me. But thisn't Bay 13 so I don't really apreciate the abuse mate.

No Ablett didn't cry in the sense that tears came from his eyes. But he was so disappointed he looked like someone who cared to much about individual awards rather than the team.

Thanks for the psychoanalysis mate. What would we all do without your insightful input?

What a farqing scum thing to say.

Because I hoped their Granddads were well? Put it this way, if anyone lost their Granddad, then cried about it, I wouldn't be giving them shit about it. They can't say they'd do the same.

Hope you feel mighty tough from behind your computer screen there, you piece of shite keyboard-warrior you.

Irony much? Try saying that to my face.

It is called Karma! He won a dodgy MVP, then has come second in the premiership, Norm Smith, Brownlow and Cats B&F.

Suffer!

Are you Hawks still crying conspiracy in the MVP? Selwood, Corey and Ablett came the top three for Geelong in the Brownlow. Poor Buddy was robbed.

Corey won the B&F with Ablett second. Selwood was squeezed out to 5th by Bartel and Ling.

Maybe Selwood was a little lucky to be nominated over Bartel but he has been bloody good this year and deserves all the recognition he can get. He was one of the very few who stood up in the grand final and tried his heart out.

On the topic if you were a Geelong supporter Corey winning the B&F was not a shock. The Geelong B&F is even harder against players who miss games than the Brownlow.

The fact that Ablett got second despite missing 5 games to score in just shows how great he played this year.
