Can we isolate QLD from the rest of Australia. Idiots.

All crowds at all games from top league sport to local clubs and school sports should be banned for 4 weeks as a start then review. The AFL should drop the first 4 rounds and go with an 18 round season. Yeah, we'd lose a home Showdown (though on the upside also an inevitable next What happen Port? loss to West Coast at AO *titanic recorder background music to go here*), but better than the alternative of letting the disease spread quicker than the health system can cope with.

The NHL season has been paused as well. There is no way the AFL will be the only professional comp still running.
NZ wont call off Rugby Union. They only have 5 cases.

Probably shouldn't be taking too many public health cues from a country whose anti-vaccination movement is pernicious enough that their most populous city has been in the throes of a measles outbreak for more than 12 months.

The AFL and other codes need to take this type of action. Sadly, it will only slow the spread not elimimate it. The NSW Chief Medical Officer is predicting that 20% of the NSW population will contract the disease, that's 1.5m people.

Do we go the Philadelphia 1918/19 route or the St Louis 1918/19 re Spanish influenza and social distancing??

Social Distancing During the 1918 Influenza Pandemic and Lessons for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

The response between Philadelphia and St. Louis made a great case that social distancing does work. In Philadelphia, the first case was reported on Sept 17 and authorities downplayed the significance of the case. They even allowed a city-wide parade to happen on Sept. 28. School closures and bans on public gatherings did not happen until Oct.3, 16 days since the first case. Meanwhile, St. Louis had its first case on Oct 5 and the city implemented social distancing measures two days later.

Doesn't matter about all that stuff. They can't justify calling off a whole comp when there are only 5 cases. The comment was the AFL will be the only prof comp not called off. No it wont be.

The fact that NRL haven't stopped yet nor the fringe hints at more Philly than st Louis to me

I find it a bit odd that the club puts out a statement yesterday to fans stating they are taking precautions around the club itself like limiting visitors, holding media conferences externally and limiting player/coach public appearances, yet there's nothing about restricting player movements outside the club. I was a bit shocked when I saw one of our Players out at the Fringe last night only 3 hours after getting the statement from the club in my inbox.

I don't see much point in having such strict policies within the 4 walls of the club to protect players then just let them wander with the throng of unwashed at the Garden of Unearthly Delights.

I have heard from someone i trust that they will suspend the AFL for 4 weeks + will review it regularly.

Like you all, I was pumped for footy, but it is the only way if this is to be contained.
This is the correct decision in my view. People are contagious prior to symptoms in the right circumstances and that would include sweaty guys tackling each other in packs. Can't see how games can proceed given correct duty of care.

The intent is not to never have people catch it, that's not realistic. It needs to
a) slow it down so the health system can ramp up and have a manageable amount of cases at a time, until
b) a vaccine is developed

We should be going hard until there's a vaccine, that we have enough of to give to everyone in the country.

5 confirmed cases. There will be tens, if not hundreds, more in the community already. Social distancing now is important to prevent overwhelming the health system later, and large gatherings and crowds are critical (and avoidable) multipliers for disease spread.

The comment was the AFL will be the only prof comp not called off. No it wont be.

Sure, but I would prefer that this is because the AFL is among the many leagues that have been called off in the indisputable interest of public health.

I'm not hopeful that a vaccine will be developed in the short to medium term. The SARS outbreak was more than 15 years ago and still no vaccine. More resources are being thrown at finding a corona virus vaccine but I'm not optimistic.
