Coronavirus has mutated into two strains, one which appears to be far more aggressive, scientists have said, in a discovery which could hinder attempts to develop a vaccine.

Researchers at Peking University's School of Life Sciences and the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai, discovered the virus has evolved into two major lineages - dubbed ‘L’ and ‘S’ types.

The older ‘S-type’ appears to be milder and less infectious, while the ‘L-type’ which emerged later, spreads quickly and currently accounts for around 70 per cent of cases.

Genetic analysis of a man in the US who tested positive on January 21, also showed it is possible to be infected with both types.

The finding comes just days after government health experts warned that the virus could hit Britain in ‘multiple waves’, and led to fears that some vaccines might not work on mutated strains.

Dr Stephen Griffin, of the Leeds Institute of Medical Research and chair of the virus division at the Microbiology Society, said that two of the changes between the ‘S’ and ‘L’ lineages were in crucial protein called ‘spike’, which plays a key role in the infection process and is a target for vaccines.

Dr Griffin said developers would need to test whether their prototype vaccines would still neutralise viruses with the changes, but added that the variations were ‘fairly limited’ and may not be a ‘huge hurdle.’

“It is usually the case that when RNA viruses first cross species barriers into humans they aren’t particularly well adapted to their new host - us!” said Dr Griffin.

“Thus, they usually undergo some changes allowing them to adapt and become better able to replicate within, and spread from human-to-human.”

Cant see it being called off, may end up shortened, delayed and running through spring/summer.. Ground availability and fixturing will become a nightmare with cricket but I suspect the government would step in and tell cricket vic to GGF and to keep the main grounds available for AFL, and state cricket can be played in cow paddocks with 300 supporters.
It’s a Chinese conspiracy to stop the tigers going back2back!

MCC gets more money from the AFL than India playing 2-3 games.

I realise that.

However they are still and always will be a cricket club.

The hierarchy there is still very old school, a lot of old money etc.

They will always align with the Australian test cricket side over the the AFL.

You don't see the problem with the demographics: 0-9, 10-29, 30+?

The data is being presented in such a way as to alarm. 38,680 cases in the 30+ category and they couldn't break it down further? Ok boomer.

Yeah they are clunky categories. I don't put any store in those groupings. It's a report on a report, after all.

Doesn't make the study itself rubbish or useless.

Which is why the government would step in, the vic state government would be reliant on the revenue a footy season brings and would lean heavily on MCC to ensure it happens.. Worst case they would just play at Docklands and Princess park and AFL might give the gf to Perth or Adelaide.. even the threat of this would be enough for the MCC to play ball

Both Adelaide and Perth also host test cricket.

I don't think you can simply just assume you shift a 6 month football competition further back into the spring and summer.

There's a whole range of commercial sponsorship and hospitality contracts for both competitions that would need to be compensated..

The players all have contractual EBA agreements relating to shutdown holiday periods etc.

There's a shitload of issues with just shifting games to other states, grounds and time periods.

I think it's far more likely the season gets cancelled/shortened than simply shifted back into Spring & Summer.

The MCC is not going to pick Test cricket over the AFL Grand Final.

Why is that?

Do you actually understand the MCC trust is aligned with the MCC Cricket Club, a cricket club governed by Cricket Australia? Just like a local club falls under the state AFL body and the broader AFL by extension?

Sorry to disappoint, but the MCC make a lot more from the boxing day test than they do from the AFL GF....

5 days x 8 hours a day of food, beverage and tickets vs 1 day for around 4-5 hours.

203,000 attendee's vs 95,000.

Why is that?

I'm working on the assumption they're not braindead.

It's really 47+ AFL games vs 2-3 India games as we discussed. Any 'traditionalists' who decided this was their hill to die on would be pushed out by the MCG's owner the Victorian Government.

Wouldn’t stop me going, but it’s probably inevitable that if it keeps spreading, games will be postponed or played behind closed doors which will suck.
So the fans could catch it and spread it, what about the players , staff are they immune ? Do they gave no interaction with the public?

the authorities very rarely think things through

one player infected suddenly become 40 players who interact with another 40. Stupidity

I would question any scientist's credentials if they feel that's an accurate way to present data.

It is in essence a news site whose mission statement is "translating scientific information ". I don't believe they've done that very well here. Do you?

It could've been done better, sure. I just cited one statistic from it.

Well it's really the whole AFL season vs 2-3 India games as we discussed.

You didn't say that.

You said vs the GF.

And it's not really 2-3 Indian games.

It's around 15 cricket games a summer, including the Big Bash.

It's also the priority of hosting the most prestigious matches of major international tournaments when they come here.

I'm sure the MCC would be thrilled to lose the T20 World Cup Final, the Women World Cup Final (in a week) and the next ODI World Cup Final hosted in Aus and more than likely a future World Test Championship final because they burnt the ICC, BCCI and Cricket Australia.

You are talking fantasy land stuff.

It would be the AFL's responsibility to finish their competition in a suitable manner and not impact on the other major tennant of the major stadia around the country, that other major tenant being cricket.

The AFL owns their own stadium, if worst comes to worst, they would have to play the rest of the season for Vic based sides out of Etihad....

40 players versus up to 95,000 members of the public in a stadium, plus the various interactions on public transport getting to and from the game.

One of these isn't like the other.

The issue with the players is the quarantine period, as we are seeing with the Serie A in Italy, with a reserves player getting it.

The J-League has been shut down in Japan.

As soon as the virus infiltrates AFL lists, the season is ****ed, as teams won't be able to field sides for a fortnight in a best case scenario.
