The Australian Constitution guarantees freedom of movement between all States and territories.

The dilemma is whether the people and governments are happy to suspend this for the sake of controlling this pandemic. If WA instituted a travel ban at ports and airports (land crossings are relatively few) for interstate travellers we could theoretically get on top of this - but the legalities are problematic.
Agree I doubt it would happen but hey we could say the same thing about pretty much everything that is happening or being proposed right now

if it comes to a point where the eastern states have a large amount of outbreaks and places like Darwin and Perth have it relatively under control it wouldn’t be out of the question to restrict travel

Lots of people have assumed each team will play each other once in 17 rounds

I havent seen where there has been a statement that the fixture will be re jigged

Which round does the first repeat fixture come? for Hawthorn it seems to be Geelong in round 13 followed by Brisbane in round 14. before (about) 2010 it would have been easier cos the double ups came at the beginning and end of the season
I suspect if THINGS GO WELL (and it could all be in a heap) there will be double ups and some teams not playing others at all.

Also the AFL should state what is the minimum qualification for a premier, rather than arguing after the fact. if its 6 completed rounds plus 2 weeks of finals as a minimum then state that now
Gil mentioned in his presser that each team will play each other once. That means the fixture will be redrawn to accommodate this, most likely before the first double up.

i would think that anything less than 17 rounds + finals will render the premiership void. otherwise, 2020 premiers will be *

People can catch the flu twice, so makes sense they can catch this twice. You're as bad as the rest of them with your intense over reaction.

Also, what if it's a virus like herpes (coldsores) that just sits dormant in the body then resurrects every so often to be transmittable again?

Too busy yesterday to hear much details on this. 17 round season was my first thought a few days ago but then soon realised, hey not everyone will have same home games. So now the AFL planning for this anyway, have they said how they determine whom gets 9 home games?

I would think in circumstances you simply make the bottom 9 clubs of last season get the extra home game each.

That's really only an issue for Victorian clubs.

For the others, it should be 8 at home, 8 away plus derby.

I don't get what's the problem with flying domestic length flights. They land and go to the hotel and are otherwise in lockdown anyway.

You are sitting next to someone within that 1.5 m rule.

We aren’t winning anyway let’s just run with it this year.

telsor they're already trying to screw us. Anything to prop up Victoria footy.
Of course. Your team's playing in a modified VFL. In saying that, your team's not being screwed, they joined the VFL and you've chosen to follow them.

With no crowds in attendance, home games are basically irrelevant. The AFL will schedule games to suit TV and minimise travel.

Eddie McGuire has hinted games could be played in 4 team blocks. For example, Collingwood and St Kilda travel to Perth for 2 weeks. They then play in three double headers with the WA clubs.

Thursday
7.10 AEST Fremantle v Collingwood (OS)
9.50 West Coast v St Kilda (OS)

Tuesday
7.10 Collingwood v St Kilda (OS)
9.50 West Coast v Fremantle (OS)

Sunday
3.20 West Coast v Collingwood (OS)
6.10 Fremantle v St Kilda (OS)

Sometimes I get little bored and play around with ideas... I have previously already designed a fair 17 game H&A season, and even more so, if it were to be 2 years of 17 in a row.

Its pretty simple, I posted the basics on twitter last night, but it goes something like the following:

Each team plays:

8 home games
8 away games
1 shared gate with same stadium tenant game
Shared games look like the following:

WCE v Freo Derby
GWS v Syd Battle of Bridge
Bris v GCS Q Clash
Ade v Port Showdown
Ric v Car Season Opener
Ess v Coll Anzac
Haw v Geel Easter Monday
Bull v North Good Friday
Mel v StK Make up something for them.

Then, for fixturing purposes only, you keep those teams grouped in pairs. Each team will play one home game and one away game for each pair,
This means equal amount of travel for EVERY club (excluding their location/distance). Each team will play in WA, SA QLD and NSW once each and 5 away games in Melb each (1 of those will be the shared gate for Vic based teams).

Then, if it is a two year fixture rotation, you just swap home teams to away teams and vice versa for the following season and still, 1 game each in non vic states, 5 away games in Melb.

Now every second year, the AFL could mix up the Vic shared games for a little variety, but the formula in principal remains the same, and it is the fairest draw possible for EVERY team in the comp.
If Gate Rev is shared, what happens to club members seats if both clubs have members assigned to the same seat? Or do you just make it a GA only until lockout for both clubs.

So 8 home game reserved seat plus GA seat in the neutral game membership?

The NSW Public Heath Act gives very wide powers, no doubt the WA version does as well.

(3) Without limiting subsection (2), an order may declare any part of the State to be a public health risk area and, in that event, may contain such directions as the Minister considers necessary—
(a) to reduce or remove any risk to public health in the area, and
(b) to segregate or isolate inhabitants of the area, and
(c) to prevent, or conditionally permit, access to the area.

I very much doubt the High Court would be willing to overturn such a order even if it in effect bans all travel to a state, if it was done to limit a real public health risk.

Having used Italian healthcare I would strongly disagree. Oh you want a booking? Sure turn up at 10am and we will see you. Sometime before close. Maybe. Gotta get that arvo sleep in!

General Practice vs in patient hospital experience is miles apart. As it is just about everywhere.

GP's run to a business model. Hospitals a health model.

fwiw i work for a Marketing company involved with the AFL and apparently a press release was sent out not long ago that all games are going ahead.

obviously things can change in minutes but i have been told to continue my work and that its all going ahead

Yep, sure it may be pushing the freedom of movement within Australia guaranteed by the Constitution but you'd think the High Court would be loathe to intervene in emergency measures implemented for public health reasons. The person/organisation that brought it before the court would also be considered a pariah.

Not true. Geelong 9 games at Kardnia Park and us none at Princes Park would be major difference in circumstances of they get 9 games on ground they train on, we get none.
With no crowds, a ground you train on is as good as home ground advantage you going to get in this weird season, so given that, make it as fair as possible.
Of course it all depends if some contract still says you play same grounds as before even without crowds. Think it is more practical to play where it makes it easiest and fairest in circumstances. Probably where the media feel most comfortable setting up broadcast in circumstances will get the main say.

Premier club for seasons 1871, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1877, 1887, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1914, 1915, 1938, 1945, 1947, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1979, 1981, 1982

For what is is worth (not much) my opinion on if the season should go ahead for now, is yes.

Play for 4 weeks or until a player tests positive, then close down until the peak is passed, continue about 4 weeks post peak.

Peak is expected around May to June. So say 4 weeks now, close down from mid April to late July & finish the season thereafter.

Should a player not wish to play, ok fine their personal heath choice. The players themselves, being fit young people are not likley to be in personal danger. But their families?

was thinking 8 game home membership, all "Marquee" or gate shared events by ticket sales only just like the finals, with members getting first access.

It's true, I've come to accept the Victorian privilege as part of life in this competition. But I appreciate you acknowledging it all the same.

We will continue to fight for freedom.
