I guess it is pretty selfish. However the reduced season will blow something like a $400m loss to the AFL. Likewise the clubs will also make a significant loss. This would translate to significant reductions to academies, local leagues and grass roots as the AFL tries to dig its way out of debt over a decade or so.

If the whole comp is scrapped the losses move into the billions and the impact on the game would be unfathomable.

On that basis whilst the players are inconvenienced for a few months, if it secures the league then I think it is a good idea.

Did you read it?

"Two clubs based outside of Victoria revealed to AFL.com.au they were prepared to play fixtured home matches in Melbourne as long as no fans were allowed inside AFL venues.

"One scenario canvassed would have interstate clubs based in Melbourne to play three matches in a 10-12 day window. This would include scheduled 'home' matches being played on opposition territory."

If the same applies to Victorian playing home games interstate then that would be more palatable. But if it's a one-way street that's uneven.

I agree.

It makes sense for Vic clubs to surrender a home game if they are playing interstate though.

eg if St Kilda have to travel to Perth to play Freo, and we have a home game vs West Coast, that we just play West Coast the next round over in Perth. Two games, one flight.

You're still taking two flights, unless you plan to remain in Perth after the game?

And presumably it would be fairer if both those games in Perth were counted as away games.

So why don't interstate clubs who play and win finals in Melbourne just stick around if they have another one the following week?

costs. in saying that plenty have stayed on. You are essentially eliminating the travel factor in which you lose 2 days of recovery/preparation which is a massive benefit. You’ll base yourself in a comfortable hotel where the surroundings become familiar. You will play multiple games on the same ground increasing familiarity. Say the Eagles get 3 games in succession at the MCG which is the same size as Optus that would eliminate any home ground advantage that their opponent may have. It’s fact and players talk about it all the time that the crowd lifts the group. That has been taken away.even the weather conditions are taken away due to living in the climate for a few days longer then normal. So all the benefits of Hone Ground advantage have been taken away. Obvious really

of course you’d remain in Perth. Otherwise it defeats the purpose

So Casual workers who happen to be employed by the government are lucky enough to be handed a chunk of the tax funded slush fund if they are forced to take time off, due to union pressure.
Other Casual workers, who may be employed by companies that are already struggling under these circumstances probably won't.

How can the government decide to donate public funding to casual workers only because they work for the government?

I understand why they want it , but there are already a huge number of casuals in hospitality who have already had their hours cut.
They still need to pay rent/mortgage.
Smaller restaurants and the like will hardly be in a position to pay them for a lot of un worked hours.

Don't be silly. And who stayed on?

If the Eagles have 3 games in a row at the MCG, that would already be unfair. More so if any of them are counted as "home games".

Two flights yeah, I meant one return flight, thought that was obvious but perhaps not!

I think what is fair is going to be replaced with what is practical. This will impact all clubs but probably not all clubs equally.

You can be practical without counting games played interstate as "home games" for the travelling club.

For example, if the Saints play both WA clubs in Perth back to back, those should still both be tallied as away games.

How do they get home after the games?

your not very bright are you? They are talking about 4/5 day breaks between games and playing 3 games in 2 weeks. the purpose was for less air travel as well as getting games in. You don’t travel home in between games

Ive just turned off Dwayne on Self Entitled Network. its nauseating
Gerard was balanced but this is just basically propaganda to keep get footy started.

even saying if all sport is cancelled everywhere else (not even wondering why) then the AFL could fill a programming void overseas with ESPN. $$$$

"Its a community service" - some people cant stand AFL dwayne?

Last night Hutchy presenting himself as a good guy feels (he could lose a few pounds or that footy classified desk has shrunk over the summer)

True but if the overall goal is to minimise travel then having teams play a home game interstate is really the only option they have.

The only variance is how much and where.
