Could Buddy spoil the party for Collingwood?

It would actually be better for the Hawks if he does have a sore knee. He has shown he can play through it.

A bout of gastro could not only leave him down on energy but could go through the whole team. Far more likely to hurt our chances IMO.

Personally hoping it's just knee management.

We also didn't have Hale in somewhat decent contesting marking form. Last time Buddy had Tarrant right on his hip, O'Brien close by and Davis hovering. This time now that our rucks are a lot better he might actually be able to get freed up a bit.
Reid will be playing and he'll take Hale. If Clarkson uses the extra down back to cover lack of height then there will be an extra down back for Collingwood. Hawks won't win with dominant forwards. If they do win in it will be with a super midfield effort helping keep Collingwood to 12 goals.

Not denying the Hawkins one at all. Although there was no 'sitting him on his arse'. Excellent use of strength though.

Yes, Scarlett was the man. You don't need to be playing on anyone directly to be put on your bum.

Buddy will be fine by Friday... but champion teams will always beat the team with the champion. Gary Ablett Snr didn't win a flag when he was up against champion teams of 89-94 ie Hawks and Eagles. This Collingwood team are a touch underdone (or maybe they are super fresh?!), but still they are pretty damn good... the hawks have other talented players besides Buddy and will no doubt fight hard, but the pies are psychologically stronger and better coached and should step up to win well.

Buddy will be a key factor, but like most games its going to be won in the middle. If Hodge, Mitchell & Co can be at their best giving buddy enough supply he could get the 5+ goals hawks need to win. They also need to put a hard tag on pendlebury to try and limit his influence.

This. The Hawthorn midfield have to do two things for us to win:

  1. Quick and frequent ball into one on one contests - Buddy whenever he has a one on one; but utilise Hale, Rioli & Whitecross when he is double-teamed.
  2. Prevent Collingwood from getting quick ball into their forward line. Hawthorn's backs struggle in one on one situations, but are dominant when we outnumber the opposition. If Collingwood are able to get quick inside 50s, even if it's just bombed in, they should win. The Geelong game demonstrated this fragility in the Hawks structure. I don't mind it to be honest, because it is that fragility which gives us our greatest strength of rebounding through pace, run and brilliant footskills.
This game could be won by Buddy if he plays a blinder, sure. The game must be won by the midfield first however in allowing him to play a blinder and in helping out our defenders.

Buddy is the best forward in the league up against a Collingwood backline who haven't played a heap of football lately. With full respect to the magpies I think they are off the boil and Hawthorn are looking a lot like 2008. And down the other end Gibson will show Darcy and KB what he thinks about their AA selections ;) GO HAWKS AND BUDDY 2011!!

i am far more confident this friday than i was against WC [ go figure ], buddy is buddy he will do well but over the whole ground we look so much stronger and with that weeks break im expecting a performance like last years prelim, well maybe hoping. pies 4goals plus ;)

It would be good to see Buddy kick a bag, given the incredibly tasteless comments 'Joffa' (who is a Collingwood employee, is he not?) posted on his Facebook page after Franklin went down with his knee injury against Geelong.

Tarrant said himself this week, it will be a team defence on Buddy. Tarrant would get monstered by Franklin if left one on one.

No way they'd play him one on one for extended periods, but yes, Franklin would violate Tarrant if Collingwood allowed him to go one on one.

The hard tag needs to be on Ball - forget the number of possessions others gather, it is ball that does the most damage.

@Sloth: Huh? I think you've been concussed for a few weeks, Digger! Let's check the missing weeks of football from your side's backline recently... Reid's missed the last 2 weeks (inc. a final), Shaw has missed 9 of the last 10 weeks, Maxwell missed 4 of the last 5 and Davis 3 of the last 5 weeks!!
That's a LOT of missed football and that's 4/6 players from your backline (two thirds if you know your maths, haha!).
Hawthorn are football hardened inc. 2 finals and while I rate the pies side of 2011 better than the hawks I feel your mob has missed so much footy lately that we could pinch this one. You only need to lose 1% of intensity in a final and it's all over Micky's mob. Hard to imagine isn't it, Sloth?!

Man the 1% of good Collingwood supporters out there must just cringe when they read the garbage that is posted by their fellow supporters.

Unfortunately this is not just limited to our supporters ; the disease is widespread and i suspect if the auditors were called in they would dispose off 99% of posts / threads on BigFooty.
