2 cases in Albury, there is a containment problem. Only a matter of time before Sydney is it inundated.

If outbreaks take place in Sydney (which seems like we’re just waiting for), I wonder if there’s a point where the feds change the approach from containment to herd immunity? Just posing a hypothetical, only becomes a relevant discussion if the track and trace and containment is exhausted and untenable.
There is no evidence here immunity is possible. You can get the virus more than once.

There is no evidence as yet that herd immunity is achievable

This is another recent test in Spain, one of the larger ones I've sen where they analyzed. Over 61,000 samples from around Spain showing ranges of antibodies from 3-10% and the antibodies are no guarantee of immunity either at this stage.

Overall about 5% of the samples showed antibodies

Spain has around double our population, they've had just under 300k cases and just under 30k deaths.

5% of the population would be 2.4 million. You'd need at least 12 times that many people for herd immunity to maybe start kicking in. They appear to be very far away from it and their deaths would go up significantly to achieve the number if it's even possible.

History with other coronaviruses points to immunity being short lived as in months to a year or two. By the time enough people have had it get to herd immunity you're going to have people coming back into the at risk pool assuming immunity works.

This is why we have vaccines. You can give vaccines to a lot of people without filling up hospitals. If a vaccine is possible for this we are probably years away from it being available to Australians in large enough quantities to matter.

So NSW have now had someone from their own hotel quarantine test positive after leaving the hotel

NSW has reported seven new positive tests for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. Six are in hotel quarantine and the seventh was the man who was released from quarantine, and developed symptoms after release.

NSW tests at day 10 and releases people if they test negative and don’t display symptoms.

The man and his close contacts are in self isolation in Newcastle.

Hopefully they don't see any community spread from that or from the Bush Doof outside Byron on the weekend that had over 1000 people at it

Link me to that proof you can get it twice?

This rings true to other viral infections. Herpes, aids. It stays in a host there but can become undetectable either through natural means or intervention. occasionally testing slightly positive (the essendon player several weeks after leaving Ireland)

How infectious/dangerous is it though down the track. Probably not so much to other healthy people?

If these things are the case, while herd immunity is hard, eradication is even harder.

Worry to think what might happen if we hit 200 cases today
I think it's more about where the cases are than how many at this point.
We are a week from the first set of restrictions. We need another week before we can really start seeing the impact of those restrictions on new cases.

The more cases they find from track and trace, the more that are within the already locked down post codes the better.

The more we have outside those areas and the more we have from unknown source the more likely they are to increase the lock down to more suburbs or all of Melbourne.

If they think it is contained they will hold the current course. If they don't think it is contained they will widen the net for sure.

This is a true story happened to someone I know.

Last week they went to hospital and underwent emergency surgery.
When out of surgery a nurse reported they had corona like symptoms. They were immediately tested and moved into isolation.
Seems all good and what I would expect. They called housemate to let them know as requested by the hospital and their housemate contacted work and was told not to attend until the person got the test back and it was negative.

Yesterday they were told they could leave hospital, called housemate to tell them and housemate said "so you are negative for corona?"

Person replied I didn't ask that specific question... so then asked that specific question. Nurse went to check the results... surely they knew them. And came back with you haven't been tested for Coronavirus, their is no record of a sample being taken.

He then said "yes I was, you people put the thing up my nose and in my mouth and told me it was a coronavirus test, then you immediately moved me into a coronavirus isolation ward and told me to inform housemates what was happening ask them to self isolate until I get the results. Which is why I am in an coronavirus isolation ward not in my original room."

End result, the hospital took another coronavirus test, and immediately discharged him, and told him to self isolate at home. Whatever happened to the original one goodness knows.

I'm certainly aware of someone having to be retested due to a lost sample. They are being shipped all over the country to be analysed right now.

438 cases may indicate community transmission
772 cases are currently active in Victoria
35 cases of coronavirus are in hospital, including nine in intensive care

We've got more active cases than our first peak in March now

The thing is they were in a hospital environment. And according to the hospital they never took one. That's what their records showed.

However he remembers them taking one, then immediately being moved to an isolation ward to protect other people and being told to inform housemate to self isolate as requested by the hospital.

If it was lost I too could understand that too, given the sheer number of tests, I'm sure there have been some lost.

I actually find this thread enlightening. Giving me a greater insight into how people think. I have a better understanding on why people blindly follow a party without challenging. Blindly hate people without understanding. And how conspiracy thinking can go mainstream. This thread goes quite well with the Serious News thread.

Very true:

1. ALP supporters say Morrison is an idiot;
2. LP supporters say Andrews is an idiot.

Most likely that both statements are true - they are both politicians after all!

They aren't idiots, idiots wouldn't have gotten to the position they have.

You also don't have to be an ALP supporter to not like Morrison, he's got members of his own party that don't like him. I'm sure it's the same with Andrews.

My best mates kids go to a daycare that had a positive case.. first round of tests they lost the results, he had to go back at 6pm to the hospital 3 days later to get another one. 3 days after that they got the all clear, he said it was an absolute shambles.

Another mate got tested yesterday, he had a runny nose (he said every winter his nose is just runny), called his work to say he is best to get tested. He is only doing it to get a week off work, results by Thursday. How many people do this to get time off work? It’s a joke the whole thing, farcical on many levels.

Inevitable

Been told via a business contact (senior executive at a tier 1 power company) that it will be a state wide lockdown. Rang my contact at Fitness Australia, so to get a different industry and he said word is the same and it’ll be announced this afternoon and from tomorrow night. Back to square one.

Well, something needs to be done, hopefully 4 weeks of this can get in under control, and beaten
