Has anyone ever suffered sleep disturbance, and then had one of those observational contraptions fitted to their body for a 'sleep study'?

What's it like? Useful?

Not a glamorous topic, I know, but a friend would really like to know.

I know this is a serious question, but being a smart arse I recommend your friend read this ‘wordle’ thread to help them get to sleep.

But more seriously, sleep disturbance is horrible and I hope it can be sorted.

Wordle might be the problem. My friend gets to sleep easily enough, but is confronted by inane walls of coloured brick as soon as they nod off, causing them to constantly thrash and waken.

Sleep disturbance really is nasty. I (yes, yes it is me) don't think I've had a decent night's sleep for 6 months.

My entire family wordled around me at Easter, including my 9 year old granddaughter who seemed to beat all the adults. I remained steadfastly aloof.

Six months is a long time, but hopefully for you perhaps not so long that it can’t be fixed. Good luck with it.

Garry Lyon vs Scott Pendlebury... clearly no contest on who is more likely to be "nonsensical" - Lyon you d*pe.

I had an at home sleep study 2 weeks ago. Don't get my results until May, Friday the 13th though...

Process wise, you go see your GP where you'll do a questionnaire. If you meet the criteria they can then refer you to a sleep specialist. You go in in the afternoon, dressed in something you'll sleep in where they fit you with all manner of wires to measure ECG, O2 sats, EMG and brain function but considering I'm devoid of one I'm not sure what they're measuring.

My quality of sleep with it on was pretty crappy but that's nothing out of the ordinary for me.

In hindsight I should have booked in an appointment with an ENT specialist at the same time.

Heading off in my pyjamas today, to be fitted out in all that equipment, ready for a night of sleeping amongst the wires.

I'm not looking forward to it, but hope it brings some sort of improvement.

I laughed that Lyon used Sicily as an example of a player that wasn't clear about the rules - I bet Jake Stringer doesn't understand them either...

I had a sleep study done at Epworth Camberwell last year...

Its a pretty uncomfortable process, lots and lots of electrodes and a tiny little bed...

I thought I was tired because of a change in medication but did it at the insistence of my wife.

The results were pretty shocking but without a doubt saved my life and improved the quality of beyond belief.

Thanks Ned.

I've been tired for a long time, but yep, it's my partner driving the idea that my sleep is seriously compromised. There seems to be breathing difficulties, followed by thrashing around etc.

I used to be relatively sprightly in the morning, but now it takes me 60-90mins to feel properly awake.

Hope I get the same bump in sleep quality.

Just putting my doctor's hat on for a moment to rule some possibilities in or out.

Do you wake up to a damp sticky patch around your midriff?

Sav, take your doctor's hat off.

Take it outside. Do you have an old washing machine-turned-incinerator? No? Well convert your current machine into an incinerator and pop that doctor's hat right in and burn the f*****.

Was going to post a picture of Tom Baker in a hat and scarf, but it turns out there's an enormous number of doctor hats I need to destroy.

Thanks Ned.

For reference I recorded 130 "respiratory events per hour" over the four hours I slept.

My oxygen saturation levels dropped to 25%.

I didn't have any REM sleep.

I also received an urgent call for an appointment from the pulmonologist when she received the results.

Guess its up to the mods to set up a poll for picking JB's numbers?

I am going with 12 oxygen events/hr and 88% oxygen saturation. Plus the monitors will also reveal he has erotic dreams about communists.

I'm not going to make the appointment today, unfortunately, but have rescheduled. I suspect my issues are similar to yours.

If it's not too intrusive (or PM if you like), what have you done to turn it around? A CPAP mask?

Currently using a full face mask with Vpap machine (For the increased air pressure and a bit of comfort), felt like I couldn't breathe and was going to choke with the nose one.

It's a little bit of a pain in the backside to get used to but its made such a difference. I haven't had a nap since I've used it. My mental acuity is back to normal. I've gone from being easily and constantly tired to having the most endurance out of anyone.

The best way I can describe it is getting 100% benefit from your sleeping periods. I hate wasting time so it feels awesome.

Appreciate the response, Ned.

Great to hear that things have turned around for you, not least because it gives me some optimism about my own situation.

The need to take naps during the day has become an almighty burden, and the mental fog is frustrating.

Guessing it gives you some awesome fighter pilot cos-play opportunities? And afterwards, "You can be my wingman anytime."
