My New Year's eve was to be in Docklands at an apartment rented by my cousin for two nights. I was going to join the group for NYE and fireworks then head home.

What I didn't count on or know about was the tram stoppage and city street closure. I never got to the gathering at Docklands. Took a tram for what turned out to be one stop and was dumped at St Kilda junction where about 150 people were clustered together like penguins on an ice float on a tight concrete platform with the numbers growing with each tram that terminated there. The removal of trams and replacement with shuttles could best be described as amateurish and totally inadequate.

I would like to be able recall an apologetic smile on the face of the CUSTOMER RELATIONS lady confronting the group of 150 or so passengers, who were in turn contemplating a NYE wasted at a tram stop. Alas her 'New Years Eve!" response to my open ended question regarding the tram situation couldn't have been briefer or less dismissive if it wanted to be. She had the personality of a dead fish and charm to match.

We were to wait for the shuttle tram into the city. When one eventually arrived, it was three quarters full and those trams were all terminating way outside the city at Anzac station. I quickly read the room, then walked a kilometre to Windsor station and caught a tram to the city, from where I hiked to Collins St and finding it closed to trams, gave up and went home.

An army of security people in matching fluorescent jackets marched down the footpath on the town hall side of Swanston St. Entering Flinders St station was like finding myself immersed in a George Orwell or Kafka novel. There was a massive police presence and every youngish man was wanded, body and luggage searched, about 10 at a time. The scene was enough to erase any notion that this was a night of celebration and reinforce the claim we live in a police state.

By 8.30pm I was home and ready to see out the new year alone. Can't for the life of me understand why trams could not have run a normal service through the city. I only wish Daniel Andrews was still Premier so I could blame him for the transport shut down. I did manage to watch the fireworks from the edge of the balcony and thought it pitiful by comparison to Sydney.

So yeah, happy new year! Hope you had a better night than me.

In short - Daniel Andrews still hovers over this state - three ways to while away the time in such a situation - i) post on BF ii) watch the GF replay on your phone iii) ring Carlton/ Melbourne and leave a NY message along the lines - "suck sh#t"

Feeling better today thanks. Catching up with Dan for beers this afternoon.
Have a chat to him about the amateurish efforts at crowd control on NYE around and in Flinders St. Tell him that a crushed kiddy or two would have been ultimately down to the legacy he has left - the 'lets implement it without bothering to think it through' approach that characterized his covid control measures have now been transferred to transport and crowds.

I’m sorry your new year was ruined. The days of talking about covid measures are long gone.

No doubt. I was referring more to the lockdown measures.
I knew that. Lest we forget! Longest lockdown ever followed now by far the lowest CBD office occupancy in Australia. (I will never be convinced that the majority of people get as much done at home as they would in a work place office.)

Well mate, I go to ‘the office’ every day.

On an absolutely gorgeous sunny spring day, too.

I hoped that day heralded a beautiful spring, and that a magnificent sunny summer was to follow.

Sadly that beautiful GF day weather has been as rare as GW sightings will be in '24. It has been sh*tful. :(

I've thought long and hard about this: the alleged El Nino can GGF and so can the BOM.

The weekend is looking fantastic.

The weekend is looking fantastic.

It will be magnificent if the forecast holds but did not want to mention this for fear of tempting the weather gods.

I hope we haven't jinxed it, jmac.
