Cann River is an interesting place. A long time ago (about 30 years - yikes!) I did a lot of work in East Gippsland, sometimes very remote. Also have relatives in Mallacoota and in farming at Wangarabell (look it up - like I said, remote).

But the roughest pub I encountered was at Bendoc. The pub at Delegate River was a little challenging too.

Put it this way - they didn’t much care for my long haired vegetarian work colleague, who vainly searched the pub menus for anything without meat!
I worked in the Hotel Central at Lakes Entrance years ago - the fishermen were quite bad tempered if they'd been out in Bass Strait for 2-3 days and didn't catch anything.

Serve beer and ask no questions - look straight ahead

Fried or steamed? Or the best option of a couple of steamed dimmies whilst waiting for the fried ones to cook?

Bayley Fritsch suddenly has a competitor for the most annoying hairstyle seen on Australian television.

I present to you BOM meteorologist Dean Narramore.

Not only is that a bouffant, it's a bouffant on an already massive head.
I thought it was a werewolf, at first glance (like something out of the Teen Wolf movie).

leon123 how are you going? Has the fire missed your place?
Yep, safe as of about 6pm last night due to wind change.

We were in the direct firing line if it broke containment lines, probably about 500 meters from us.
Bloody exhausted today... no one lost houses, cfa, dse and the old school community did a wonderful job

And... thanks for asking

Great news. I bet you're knackered - outside working in 40 degrees is bad enough. Then add in fire clothes and a fire heating it up even further. CFA are amazing

Mum and dad got lucky too. They were with us in Adelaide on Xmas day driving home on boxing day, expecting the northerly to spot fire it in their direction. But all good

I cant express it well enough sr, so happy, relieved or something for everyone in our local little area. So relived for your mum and dad...the northerly winds were very strong, soil is dry and a lot of dry bush in its path

Thanks manic, not really, if you know what to expect and been through it before not to bad... in my younger days i was a dse firefighter for 5 years. Between the five houses that stayed we had sprinkler systems, 3 fire trucks and had cut our fences down for easy access and had 6 days to prepare...ie moving animals and household items out.

Heaps of beer in fridge

Incredibly well earned beers. First 6 would have just been hydration.

It's very tough, not just fires, which are bad enough, but a lot of tourist dependent businesses have had their peak season wiped out.
A disaster all round.
When this is over, we need to visit the region.
