I like that we have no No.1 ticket holder as it purveys that members are equal. I hadn't thought of years of membership in that vein though and thought they were removed as a cost cutting measure. To me years of membership is about recognising a persons contribution to the club and something that person can take pride in. Similar to how 10 year players get life membership or how corporations have 10, 20 year service awards for their employees.

Thinking about it now I can see how some may use years of service as a pissing contest, but should the actions of a few restrict the ability of others to celebrate their contribution privately?

The one aspect that annoys me is that the club should focus on rewarding/acknowledging consecutive years of membership. I am big on loyalty.

Maybe I’m overly sensitive to it. I probably wouldn’t have noticed it in isolation, but given that it was one if a series of (good) things, I was happy to go with it.

The other thing I see with the ‘years membership’ thing is that it discourages people from microwaving their membership, IIRC people who rejoin go back to year 1?

Yep, it's consecutive years. The membership type doesn't matter though, so if it's a cost thing members can just drop to the cheapest and retain their years of service. I like that aspect as it doesn't discriminate and allows flexibility for change of personal circumstances.

I think the thing I'm excited about is that it's not that MacRae will have vastly different ideas on how players can improve but he seems natural in dealing with individuals and hopefully that translates in him being able to build connections that helps to get the best out of players.

I remember Malthouse saying how players respond differently. Some respond well to a spray and some respond to softer feedback. What MacRae said about Grundy about how we should celebrate he is different and not try and force a round peg into a square hole but also that he needs to find a way to connect individually with his team mates.

Its all words at this point BUT I have hope that there will be a positive reaction from the team.

And in his first meeting with them on Wed, he already got them to raise their hand and say what they wanted to improve on.

I've mentioned this before but I was pissed off when they stopped stamping members medallions.

I had to do quite a bit of work to get my dad's number, a number he held for over 35 yrs.

Got it & after a few years ED decided to save $7K a year & abolish the stamping of numbers.

It wasn't about a low number, it wasn't that low, it was about history & connection.

It’s all well and good to be impressed by him so far, he’s saying all the right things, but most new coaches do. They sell hope to the supporter base. Proof will be in the pudding if he can actually produce the results he speaks of.
It would be wise to remember that Buckley was a wonderful public speaker and said all the right things when he got the senior gig too.
Im liking the appointment so far, but the gushing over him in this thread is OTT so far imo, he doesn’t have the runs on the board yet to deserve the kind of praise he’s receiving.

There's no doubt that Bucks was great in front of the media. But I can't recall him ever detailing how he would address our deficiencies. In press conferences Bucks was always reeling off stats "Got nutted in the clearances...", "minus six in contested possessions....", etc. I think the difference here is that McRae has detailed the areas of weakness and laid some foundation on how he will address those weaknesses. That's why there is such excitement and anticipation with him. The fact he has had a long and diverse apprenticeship is another added bonus.
I, too, am buoyed by his appointment and have confidence that he will do well.

That apprenticeship is the outstanding thing for me - he brings a lot of varied experiences to the table.

Bang on , super impressive

Even through his playing days. Imagine playing with the likes of Pyke, Michael, Voss, Aker, Lynch, and Leppitsch. Lot of different units.

Start to realise how impressive 3peats are or multiple premierships in a few short years. Takes a lot to go right , takes a lot of team work and adaption to gel with individuals.

He is turning on himself. And sharing his private conversations with players already is a worry too.
Where is all this coming from?
Are you basing your issues on his presser 5 days ago or his radio interview 4 days ago?

There's nothing wrong with people being excited.

This is the part I loved. Coach to your players’ strengths, or get new players. Bad coaches put their players in a position to fail. A “brand” of football is a wank.

It makes me wonder how he is going to address our lack of key forwards. McRae has said we will look to improve at the contest and increase F50 entries. That gives less talented forwards more opportunities to impact.

The other thing you do with less talented players is get them to apply pressure. I suspect we'll get it in more and try and lock it in to repeat scoring opportunities. We'll need quick players forward of the ball and good ground level guys to execute that.

To my way of thinking it may make it less likely we try to recruit Weideman, for example. He’s not really noted for his contesting in the air, and McRae is giving us the heads up that we’ll be kicking to contests more, so we’ll need players who are able to provide a strong contest.

Tyson Stengle - come on down!

Getting it forward more is going to be the big issue with our midfield, unless we play a bloke short up forward and then you get big issues with both scoring and locking it in. So another decent mid or two is needed.

Hm....member since 2002, barely any posts in almost 20 years.

Very active post new coach appointment.

I wanna give the benefit of the doubt here but I'm sensing some (possibly subconscious?) animosity towards a coach that played for a team that beat us in 2 Grand Finals. Your posts about McRae just come off as...odd

We don’t need Stengle IMO, McCreery and Dib will already provide enough fwd pressure.

Just focus on a key forward, McMahon and Begg are still too underdeveloped to have a big impact next year. A Riccardi or Weideman will at least challenge Cameron to build on his good season this year.

Dib probably an inferior version of Atu.

Not sure I'd be hanging my hat on him.
