I don’t mind it. If we are setting a goal of one flag in 5 years, then say in 2 years if we are just plodding along and doesn’t look like it will be achievable then they are bound to make changes.
Nicks, Hamish and Reid will all need to go.
Also tells me they’ve got some expectation of bringing in some experienced talent in the next couple of years. Realistically draftees in the next 5 years are unlikely to be meaningful contributors to a flag within 5 years. I doubt they think we’ve got a premiership list ready to go.
Then again it could have been a brain fart that looked good on a white board and they ran with it.

Tend to agree. It’s a bit cringey, and it should be obvious. We’re aiming for a flag. Duh, no shit.
But when does the club ever come out and say that? Normally they’re content with being competitive, make the 8, get good crowds, the rest is a bonus.
They’ve openly stated they’re chasing a flag. Makes it hard to argue that everyone’s doing a great job if they don’t get there.

God we have some whingers on this board - and literally club can’t blink without finding a way for it to be bad
Lots of complaints about the rebuild timeline, that we only aim to make the eight, etc etc
So we announce a pretty measured target of a flag in 5 years (focused on Mens for this) and we bash them for it
We haven’t done anything ridiculous like Port’s Chasing Greatness 3 flags in 5 years which was just a “let’s copy Richmond because it worked for them” and was a massive reach
This is a reasonable chance - even with the errors we have made so far in the rebuild. It means we need to aggressively trade - not draft - over the next two years.
We need to bring in another 3-4 high quality players include a star mid.
They have laid out the goal, and the timeline. The method becomes clearer as there aren’t many levers to pull

Yep and where has not making the goal of a flag got us? Nowhere, so I see no harm in it.
I’d rather they come out and put some pressure on themselves rather than plod along like we’ve done for 25 years.

A team like North can say ' we aim to play finals within 3 years' and be seen as saying the right things
Success doesnt mean the pinnacle - just something achievable

Don't mind it at all, people at the club putting their necks on the line. As if we look miles off it in a few years they can go.
Got a feeling we might shock a few this year though.

People can deny it till they are blue in the face but we saw it at selection - continuity, seniority etc
We saw it at draft - just get good guys who can follow orders

i think they do reckon they've got the list. Forward line is actually good, midfield is 'stacked' and defence is developing. My money is on them believing a couple of astute trade/RFA acquisition and we're there.

We'll need FA though because we're at that point where every ounce of focus is on being as high up the ladder as possible. So this star mid and other high quality players will likely need to arrive with picks around 10 each year. Given we stuffed up 4 picks of a 5 pick run, and looking at our current list, we need another 2 years around 14/15 and then nail our firsts with mids.
On the 5 year plan, meh. Who cares, it's just a way to placate supporters and make them think we're on track, or there is a track. Fagan got lambasted because as a club we couldn't have been in a worse position and he used meeting the objectives of an undisclosed plan to counter the view that we were a basket case. It was his version of Trigg's website hits. Who knew they were so important, nobody until he told us how awesome we were doing on that space. But it's not achieavable, it will not happen. This rebuild won't even get to the level of Craig's preliminary final groups.
Competition has matured and having 2 of the best the game will ever see in peak form will no longer provide the advantage it did. 3 flags occurred in 5 years where Randall and Phillips played out the season. Where they didn't, I don't think we even made finals. Our system isn't what set us apart and it'll just keep falling back into the pack. That said, the fixture has a big bearing too, given they don't even play each other once and there's some really bad sides still.
