Toast CROWS get their man Don Pyke named Adelaide coach

I actually think Teague has done a terrible job with our forwards.

Our forward line succeeds on raw talent but falls over just as hard as our midfield when there are loses back.

Tex plays behind his man and does the stupid little shove and grab. No-one really leads hard like a key forward should. Jenkins and Tex both refuse to crash packs.

If our forward line was structured up like the forward lines of the top sides we'd be a lot more successful.
Rubbish.

Two weeks ago we were lauding the man for having a plan B in matches. Two bad weeks and we're saying that's his weakness?

Seems a bit convenient. Can't blame the coaches all the time. Lots of the blame lies on Walker and Co. Where were they when north kicked 10 goals in a row? When Melbourne kicked 8/9? Or when Sloane was getting tagged out of the game?

Nowhere!

Not me, I started a whole thread dedicated to finding out what the changes that were made were because off the TV the only change was Richmond stopped working hard to get numbers at the contest and we started winning more of them and exiting much better. From memory, not a single poster identified a coaching move. But the GBU thread was littered with references to a coaching move led revival in that game. I think people just assumed that an in-game turnaround was due to a structural response. I don't think it was and I haven't seen any identified by those who claimed it to be true.

The last couple of weeks Pyke has gotten the side prepared to play like they don't give a shit.

Yeah. I posted this somewhere else but when at the the game I noticed both the Crows and the Melbourne warm up. Melbourne looked sharp, fired up and switched on. Crows looked like they were out for a Sunday afternoon stroll. It had me worried straight away when I saw that.

We all praised him after round 6 when he was able to make changes and reset us against Richmond. Since then he has been a stunned deer in the headlights.
I hope to god he is Neil Craig MK II

I have to agree with him. Walker when going for a contested mark kind of shirks the contest and puts one hand up in the air, or immediately feels for his man and tries to shove him out. Eddie does this a lot too, but he's a small guy usually with a taller defender, so you can sort of expect it.

JJ is soft as butter, great when we've got an open forward line and he's running back on to the ball.

Both of these guys should be crashing through packs.

Gov is the type of forward I like, actually goes up for pack marks and is a presence.

Outside of Gov and Sloane, we have almost 0 contested marking players.

Criticism of Pyke is tough at this stage. For all we know he's been making changes and they haven't been working. It's the players who have let him down IMO. Their effort and intent in the past two weeks has been well down on the rest of the year. The North game was arguably worse but it doesn't matter in the end. Although the inability to deal with multiple extra's behind the ball is a concern.

Beech is the best contested mark at the club imo (McGovern excellent but drops a heap as well). In Gov's absence and with out other talls a joke in the air our forward line needs Beech.

Gov and Lever are both very good marks of the ball and you'll be much better when they are back.

It's called a knee-jerk reaction. You need to be more patient and less reactive.

I'll bet both you and Vhaluus loved what Tex did rounds 1-6. He has two off games and he is on the tip?

Contested Marks? The best average just over 2 a game. Hardly an essential stat to win imo.

Worth a crack I reckon. Jenkins needs to find form. Get him in for Jenkins, Otten for Lever, Greenwood for Mackay. Play Hampton in Mackay's role on a wing.

Only prob there is the 2R situation.

While JJ has returned soft as butter he is far more likely to win us a final than Otten imo...no way Otten gets close to JJ's goal tallies over a season.

I'd give Jenkins the Brisbane game with the very explicit direction that Otten is sitting there in the reserves after not doing much wrong, we are backing your talent but this is the last of your credits, if you don't show 100% this week you can GTFO.

I'd put the same ultimatum to Hartigan in terms of performance under pressure...start showing the form of the recent past again or your spot in danger also.

The 3rd and biggest rocket goes to BC who I would also give one last chance. Show some genuine effort, crack in, be a team player and don't crap yourself with ball in hand with your pathetic rocket handballs to a guy in a worse spot or you will go next week as well. Time to start to deliver.

Yeah fair calls there. Brad is super frustrating. Always seems rushed. His first game back against GC was very, very good though. Need to back him in for a few rounds yet.

I've been critical of Walker overhead for the last few years, not just in the last two weeks. He does some fantastic things, but pack marking is most certainly not one of them. Not saying he's "on the tip" at all.

Actually I've been critical of Walker since mid way through last year and my post history will show that.

He isn't the player he used to be and it's frustrating because he still has the potential.

It's not about the contested mark, when you jump for a pack its to bring the ball to ground where your players want it rather than where theirs do.

He is averaging just under 2 contested marks a game, maybe 1 below the league leader. Tex has a lot more to offer (agreed) but he isn't a push-over in the contest.

What games are you watching? Tex has been voted the best captain in the league, and he is ranked as one of the most influential players in the comp.

If you think Tex doesn't influence the contest, I reckon you might be suffering from seeing what you want to see. (confirmation bias)

Just love how quickly our forwards and their setups are now a joke. Seems like a quick turn-around from being unstoppable. In AFL, it's never as good or as bad as people think ... we were never miles ahead of the comp, we have not dropped to being also rans.

I never said we were also rans i said i think our forward structures arent as good as the top teams and i stand behind that. Go watch geelong at their peak if you want to see a well structured forward line that has a lot of individual talent as well

This is one of my fave coaching anecdotes. I'm not a Man U fan, but can say whole heartedly Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the greatest sports bosses ever to grace the planet.

And this anecdote from one of the greatest on field leaders.

Keane, whose United career ended following a controversial interview with the in-house TV station MUTV, recounted one particular pre-match team-talk which reflected Ferguson’s ability to read the mindset of his players. “I thought I knew what the group might need, that we didn’t need a big team talk,” said Keane. “It was Tottenham at home. I thought please don’t go on about Tottenham, we all know what Tottenham is about, they are nice and tidy but we’ll ****ing do them. He came in and said: ‘Lads, it’s Tottenham’, and that was it. Brilliant.”

For those playing at home, Tottenham just defeated Man U to go undefeated at home this season. Man U won't be making Champs League. Man U have fallen in a heap since Ferg left. Spurs probably have the best man motivator in the premier league. Just watch this for the bond between player and coach

Ferg and Keano. What a 1-2 leadership pair. Clarkson and Hodge/Mitchell are a great AFL combo.

I want our guys to have that same confidence and arrogance.

Pykey to give the team talk before a home game against Melbourne.

"Lads. It's Melbourne"

And the players know what that means and know how to get the job done.

"Get the job done"

"Elite standards"

In the pursuit of our masterpiece, things are slipping.

The growth wasn't always going to be linear, but this is a wake up call if ever there was one.

I like Pyke's considered approach.

I like that he's the Professor.

But I wonder if his dryness and lack of passion hinders us.

I heard him on the radio. He was asked if he ever gives players a bake. He said no. It was pointless. The players know they didn't do good.

Do they?

I think we need someone with passion.

Football is played with the head but legends are made with the heart.

Blighty got to their hearts.

So did Beverage.

I'm not saying Pyke goes. I know he's the right man.

But I think he needs an animated number 2. Someone who cuddles the players after a win and shits on them after a loss.

I think we listened to the same interview I think but he also said he doesn't give them a rev up pregame, could that explain our soft starts?
