Rumour Cyril Rioli, his wife and Kennett

Do you honestly reckon someone would forgo over $1m in salary, and walk away from his team mates he's played footy with for over a decade because of a comment an old man made who later apologised when he was made aware that he'd caused offense?
This might come as a shock to you but a lot of aboriginals aren't as obsessed with the dash for cash as us whitefellas and rarely will money come before family.

Which club Presidents constantly put their foot in their mouth over matters like this? One comes to mind well before Jeff K.....
You’re absolutely right. Have to be Caro’s old man and ex Tiger supremo, Ian Wilson wouldn’t it? Notorious for shooting his mouth off 45years ago. That’s well before Jeff K.

Even excluding money he has too much respect for his team mates & coaches to let a single minor incident like this be the reason he walked from footy.

And I give you the tip - I would give up the money to live the life in the beautiful Tiwi Islands with family and friends and be treated like a hero and eat fish and crabs every day.

i'm a saints supporter we do not have the inbuilt sarcasm or humor function that the newer models come with

It is hard to put sarcasm into the written word with any effect, I know...but given Barrett's relentless attack on all things Bulldog, you can read a lot worse on our board. No sarcasm intended there!

Also, whilst this incident where Kennett was rude and derogatory to Cyril's wife clearly wouldn't be THE factor that sparked his retirement I don't think anyone can state with certainty that it wasn't to some degree a contributing factor to his overall feeling that it was time. I mean, who needs that kind of shit?
That's my impression. The retelling of it in the media is likely a far more dramatised version of what really happened. If it was as big a deal as some are making out then it wouldn't make much sense for Cyril to come back and do that media piece for the club. He could have very easily disappeared back home and wouldn't have had to deal with media stopping him in the streets or waiting for him out front of his house.

Something resembling this story would have happened, but it would have been, as you said, a contributing factor - not the reason.

Life’s funny. He’s dealing with an ill family member if I’m right? The pull to come home is already there. Then some ‘minor’ or ‘insignificant’ things on their own happen, a run in with the president, not getting picked, might’ve crashed his car I have no idea, but generally it’s the straw that breaks the camels back.

People asking about how could anybody walk away from a million dollar contract, obviously the benefit and lure of leaving was stronger than the financial benefit and pain of staying.

Footballers won’t earn 1M for the rest of their career, Rioli is getting closer to the end of his career and decided to finish it early.

I hope he is in a good head space and has a good support network. 10 years is a long time to move cities and he gave a lot to the club.

Fly well Cyril!

All good points. We all knew Rioli was going to go back home eventually. He loves playing football, and while I'm sure he enjoyed playing on the big stage in the AFL, I don't think he necessarily "loved" being an AFL player.

The bloke has won four flags and a Norm Smith medal. It's not like he faced the option of retiring now thinking about whether or not he had achieved all he wanted to. Hawks are on the rebuild now and a lot of his long time mates from the club have moved on and those spots taken by the next gen.

I think the pull of home, his career aspirations more than met, the changing of the guard at the Hawks, and his bad luck with long term injuries the last couple years were large enough factors for him to call it.

Obviously there's a little more to it with the sudden leave of absence just before he was due to return. We may never know what it was that drew him back home this time (but nor is it any of our business). All we can know for sure is that him going home was inevitable, and his circumstances (some known, some unknown) at this point in time were heavily in favour of that happening sooner rather than later.

Noticed you have edited your other "typos".

Truth is you haven't given the lady the respect of even getting her name correct.

Find some honesty.

Share some of it with your idol, Jeff.

My bad, I too go back and fix posts if I notice grammar or spelling mistakes, along with those errors that are pointed out to me.

Note to self - do not do so in future.

Thanks Dave, if it makes you feel any better it was an honest mistake that I meant to correct when you called it out but I had to deal with something off BF today and it took me a while to get back to it.

Good idea.

You must find the continued process exhausting.

Very but probably not as much as those who are proof reading everyone’s posts.
