Good luck to all d2 sides next year with Penninsular being relegated back to D2 because of player payments. Odds for POB's $1.00 evens for flag

Interesting situation - but at the end of the day you just play who you come up against. I think that the penalty should be stronger, but don't think it would be fair on D3 teams to have to have a D1 team line up in 2009 against them.

Champ.

Who is likely to take the vacated spot in D1? Prahran? Ivanhoe? Is there a precedent for this?

Prahran will stay up.

Correct, Prahran will stay up. When teams have folded or left the comp, it's always been one fewer team gets relegated.

Would relegating them to D3 mean more players would 'crack it' and leave making it a bigger penalty.

Or perhaps starting next season in D1 on -16 points....No real chance of finals and a huge chance of being relegated, which again would be far less exciting for players to waste a year on.

No I think relegation is the best solution, -16 pts won't hurt their pride as much as going down a division & a team could still make finals starting 4 games down.

Look out D2 teams though, as I think Peninsula will have "sh!t on the liver" for getting relegated & have extra determination to get back up to D1. Could be a blessing in disguise for them as they haven't been promoted by winning a premiership yet.

If they are found guilty then as per the following extract from the affidavit signed by clubs & officials, it should be a minimum 2 grade drop:

"5. I understand that should any violation of any of the above clauses be proven, the club shall be immediately suspended, fined an amount not less than $5,000.00 and not more than $10,000.00, be demoted a minimum of two sections for the following playing season and/or at the discretion of the Executive Committee of the Victorian Amateur Football Association the club’s membership of the Victorian Amateur Football Association may be terminated."

Seems pretty clear McAdam, D3 it should be. BUT, in the letter to clubs (and on VAFA website) it says they will be drawn to play in D2 in 2009. It will be interesting to see the final decision at their meeting on Oct 26, will it be D2 or D3??????

They will get special treatment because they are a private school club. The rules are clear, down 2 grades. Why should D2 suffer?

R-79 - do you think the penalty should be based on players cracking it or on what is the greatest penalty that will deter clubs from willingly or unwillingly breaking the rules?

IMO - any club that pays players and gets caught should be dealt with as harshly as possible. If people who run clubs or foster this type of cheating, then they need to take the responsibility of what it could do to their club. I would imagine dropping a few grades, loss of points, fines .....and maybe loss of players not wanting to play in a lower grade - would help and make people think a little harder?

I think you will find that that rule applies to paying players, wheras overpaying a player coach is a far greyer area, and the two grade rule does not apply. If you also consider the circumstances where he pulled the boots on due to player shortages you could argue that they were very stiff to drop at all

Also, by all reports it was the coaches better (or worse) half that allegedly dobbed him in.

OC37 - we played with 16 ( actually 13 as two guys had hamstring injuires from the week before and one knee reco from the week before ) against the bees reserves this year and got smacked by 34 large ones - so pulling on the boots because they were short is not really a reason.

That being said - I am not privy to all the details and as such can not really give informed comment.

My comment before was more about the situation and not aimed at any club or person.

Akkadakka - that is some drive for your guys - next year !!!

But dropping two grades you're just handing them a premiership. Its like saying "here's your punishment... oh & ah... don't forget your flag that goes with it!"

Spot on Sniper 20, i cant see that by being relegated 1 grade is punishment. Surely a negative points start to the season has to be included in their punishment

Peninsula as they were this year will go very well in D2, but I think getting relegated will have a massive impact on the playing list.

Put yourself in the position of a Peninsula player. Now obviously the club stalwarts will stick around, but if you were a younger player, or a relatively new player to the club, would you stick around to play at a lower level, when you know that your good enough to comepete at a higher one? It only takes 6 or 7 to leave and they will be right back with the rest of D2.

The prospect of a premiership may be the only thing that will keep the list together.

Absolutely rapt we don't need to travel to Peninsular. 1 1/2 hour drive at least. Akka I've got the phone number to Westrans Bus Lines and the Westin Travel Lodge:D:D:D

Did St Bedes have a similar situation when they won the 2006 Grand Final in C section. Luke Beveridge started playing midway through the year while he was still coaching.
Must have coached for nothing.
If anyone knows of any other 100 game AFL players who are willing to coach for nothing can you PM their details so I can ask them to coach my club.
