Has been rotting on the Rookie list 1 year too long. Great to see he's actually going to be paid properly for now on - certainly deserves it, very reliable player.

Finally. It actually should have happened ages ago.
It effectively did happen last year when he signed a 2 year contract. Because we had a senior list of 38 + 6 rookies we were able to upgrade him for the full season and take advantage of the rookie list salary cap concessions.

Thanks, I thought it did. The problem is the AFL list, draft and trades rules are that complicated these days it is hard to know. I think what has just happened was always going to happen.

Rookie list/Rookie draft should be scrapped I reckon. Just have everyone on the main list.

The rookie list is a bit of a misnomer now isn't it? May as well call it the Povo List.

What does that mean?

He was paid properly ie he got more than standard Rookie base, but we used a salary cap avoidance technique to make sure the maximum base payment to a rookie that wasn't counted in the cap ie $85,000 in 2018, was dodged for him and Thomas in 2018.

Lienert is on the same set up, a 2 year contract, counted on the rookie list in 2019 but will be on the main list in 2020. We avoid a max of $90,000 of his base payments in the 2019 season being counted as part of the salary cap payments total.

It was going to be scrapped but because the 2017-22 CBA wasn't signed off until June 2017 ie after the 2017 football year had been going since 1st Nov 2016, they had to keep rookie list and different payments based on the 2012-16 CBA.

Clubs now use the rookie list as a way to dodge salary cap totals.

Hence the Povo List. ;)
