Dangerfield - How close to elite is he

Some of the tagging he's received this year has been blatantly against the rules and spirit of the game. What Guthrie got away with was an absolute joke.

Overall I've enjoyed seeing the umpires put the whistle away a bit more this year, but there's a line, and Guthrie went way over it. When a guy is deliberately diving on a guy's back every time he gets the ball, and has both arms around him at stoppages, it's time to start paying free kicks. There is not a player in the history of the game who could have had a major impact with the way Geelong were treating Dangerfield. He's looked sore ever since. The umpires really did a poor job controlling that, and our players should have been helping him. The rest of the team really needs to start blocking. We continue to be terrible at this aspect of the game.

He's elite. He regularly does things that nobody else in the competition can. Even without consistently huge possession numbers, he has a big impact on most games. He's not the best player in the game, but he's one of only a few guys who are a genuine chance to dethrone Ablett.

He'll find consistency, but it'd be nice if the rest of the team would help him overcome taggers, and the umpires would call blatant infringements (though this is, obviously, a pipe dream).

There is a big difference between elite midfielders who have a tagger stuck up their bum and good midfielders who are not tagged.

Richard Douglas played really well last year until late in the season when he was tagged. This year most teams are tagging Danger and sometimes Sloaney as well. This should enable Thommo and Dougy to rack up possessions (and also Brad Crouch when he returns).

The question is which midfielder would you swap for Danger?

Answer - No one. Yes, Gazza is better but is much older, Pendlebury and Selwood - line ball. Jobe Watson - nup, Harvey - are you joking, Griffen - nice lad but...

Absolutely. And I reckon the AFL ratings build that in based on context of your possession/disposal and what you do with it. If your under the pump being tackled and put the ball to the teeth of the goals.. or better yet burst from centre to actually kick a goal.. you get more points rating than someone taking an uncontested mark in the square and turning around to pop it through.

You would swap Pendlebury for Danger. No doubt. Pendlebury is clear second best in the comp and not far behind Ablett.

Out of interest who would you put in the equation. Any list including Dane Swan disqualifies your opinion.
Watson.

EDIT: Plus any player that can play two good games in a row not against minnows. Love Danger but we are still waiting for the potential to turn into 'eliteness'.

Pendlebury is the clear second best player in the league for mine. Doesn't have the same level of explosiveness as Danger, but has that extra touch of class. Doesn't seem to matter if he's in the clear, or surrounded by multiple players, he works his way through it, and hits a target (or the scoreboard).

Dangerfield would have arguably the best combination of size, strength, speed and explosiveness I've ever seen. He has everything it takes to be something very, very special.

Edit: And yes he is elite and no I wouldn't trade him for anyone
