Dangerfield - How close to elite is he

You have to start wondering how high he'll score in the Brownlow this year. Not suggesting for a minute he'll win it but he should pick up a handful of three point games, though it depends on what they are looking for ( umps)
ATM, he'll be somewhere around 15-18 I think. He has 3 vote locks with the PAP, Carlton, WCE, Essendon games, 2 vote locks for Fremantle, and I think he is bound to get votes in the Sydney, and the 2nd Geelong game.

I agree completely, but the above poster said your not elite unless you perform in finals. Jobe Watson hasn't done that yet, so it was more a question to him.

Finals are irrelevant to elite status IMO. Danger is a superstar.

Not irrelevant. But it's hard to judge when your side hasn't played much finals football like Essendon (pretty sure Jobe has only played the Elim finals in 09 & 11). But big games make the man and finals we will see where Danger is at, he seems like the perfect type for finals.

Dangerfield has the rare ability to will himself onto each contest and the ability to drag a club through almost by himself. He is fantastic and can only get better.

Elite has lost all meaning. Danga's quite the skin handler though. Well up there.

no the term elite still has the same meaning it has always had.

however it's application has been overused to a degree that the impact of the word has lessened somewhat.

Pretty much this. When I think elite, I think Ablett (if we're honest, Ablett is probably just in a group of his own), Pendlebury etc... Danger's absolute best is definitely comparable to these guys, however, for mine, he doesn't deliver it on a consistent enough basis to be included in that group. He will though, and I think it will be sooner rather than later.

I'll also add that when he's in full flight, I don't think there is a more exciting player in the league. The combination of pace and sheer brute strength that he has makes for some very watchable football.

from an outside perspective, i love dangerfield absolute freak around stoppages, kamikaze style clearance work, will put his body, heart and soul into getting the football, and love watching his run and carry, would complete our midfield and would be absolutely freaky watching cotchin and dangerfield on the same team. Above all else seems like a very loyal guy and very sensible as well you guys found a gem in danger.

...I understand the point, but that's not the nature of language.

Irrelevent isn't the right word, but you can earn elite status without being involved in finals performances.

If you said your not elite unless your a proven finals performer, then Pav and Watson aren't elite.

That was my point.
FWIW I don't consider Dayne Beams elite, given his tendency to choke, and badly, in finals. If his H&A form continues into this year's finals, I'll consider him elite. I think finals performance has a significant impact on whether a player is considered top tier. Players like Pav probably deserve the elite tag based on H&A form given their lack of finals games.

Just watched the Danger's highlights real from the game.

Blimey, that goal from outside 50 is just sensational. Seriously, I can't think of enough superlatives. Fantastic goal, fantastic game.

Not quite comfortable labeling Danger elite just yet, he's close though. I'd label him as an A-Grader bordering on elite. Next year I think he will well and truly deserve the title of elite with another PS behind him and experience in a genuine finals campaign.

If you are talking about last year he was injured going into finals and shouldn't have played.

Danger isn't elite, yet.. His best is clearly in the elite category but he doesn't have the consistency in his game yet to be really considered in the elite category a la a Pendles,Ablett, Judd in his prime. This is just his breakout season but he's been able to produce his elite best a half a dozen or so times and the gap between his best and worst games is getting smaller and smaller. He has all the tools to be elite and has a desperation/thirst for the contest that is second to none and an ability to drag a team over the line on his shoulders as he did on the weekend - the goal from outside 50 was incredible. I expect to see him further develop that consistency next year at which time I think he will rise into that genuine elite category.

Danger is not elite. I'm sick of every player that shows something being called elite. The term "elite" should only be used when discussing players that have a huge impact on 10 out of 12 games. That is my opinion anyway. Danger has every attribute 2 be easily in the top 10 players in the league if not higher in the future however he has not been consistent enough yet. Perhaps I am confusing elite with freakish but i just feel that elite is over-used and have heard it to describe about 50 players this year

I actually agree with this. Dangerfield is a freak and has all the attributes to become Elite. Thompson is Elite and to describe Paddy as the same is a bit of an insult to the work Thommo does week after week after week. The difference between the 2 is that we are surprised when Thommo has a quiet game. Paddy will be Elite very very soon, but consistency is the key.
