It seems that some people have Jackson as a 'favourite' player. No shame in that, I thought Fiora was going to come good eventually.

All he has going for him is he is the right age to be playing good footy.

He has slow decision making which sees him either get caught with the footy or hesitate taking the ball into the forward line, meaning our forwards get their leads chopped off. He doesn't have good enough disposal to be able to compensate for this.

He is not good enough to be playing midfield, yet this is the only place we can play him because he isn't smart enough to play in defence, nor is he creative enough to play as a forward (except for pre-season about 5 years ago when he played full forward for about 3 games). You'd hope that a guy like him could at least play as a tagger like Steven Sziller did for us, but he isn't even any good at that.

At least Tuck can win the ball even though he might butcher it.

If he's so intelligent he ought to find a role he can dominate and make his own, and do it quick smart, because he'll be easily replaced by any one of the kids we have coming through once they put on a bit of meat.

lets be honest, Jacko has never been any more than a hard worker. For all he toiled he peaked 12 months or so ago and at his best through weight of contested hard earnt possessions (not efficiency) he was able to make an impact. At his peak i would have thought he avg ~25 possies...this has dropped back markedly and he now looks sluggish to the point the game has gone way past him. If there was even a remotely decent trade option we should snaffle it. His best is well and truly passed

I think he is lucky to be offered a contract at all. He would not make the starting 22 of 95% of the other teams in the AFL. Would be handy in the A-Grade Amateurs.;)

He is a dumb footballer. Hit the ball out on the full from a throw in (immediate freekick), Goodes free kick. He is too slow and doesnt have a good football brain. I'd delist him and keep Tuck. Tucky's old man played until he was about 50 so Tuck might have 5 years left !

Where's the clap smiley? Oh well :thumbsu:

Could not be more obvious. Tucky protects our kids Jacko does not. Jacko gives away stupid frees Tucky does not. Tuck is also a great mark for a midfielder.

Always found that for someone who comes across as a very well spoken and intelligent man, he is an incredibly dumb footballer.

Remember Rodney Eade's comments about Will Minson, "He'd have to be the dumbest smart bloke playing AFL Football".

Being well educated off the field, doesn't mean that you will automatically have the ability to always make the right decisions on the field.
In a sport that has become as fast as ours now has, you are only afforded a split second to assess your options. That skill is innate, you either have it or you dont. It doesn't matter if you left secondary school early like Dusty or are a supposed multi-lingual genius like Minson or Jackson.

I still feel Jacko's biggest issues relate to his disposal and his uncontrolled aggression, rather than his gameplay decision making. He served a purpose and did it well in the past, (but not so well this year and the last). As expected, he will ultimately be upgraded on our list by better options. I would hope that will be at the end of this season. There is a unique opportunity with GWS and their need for that "Campbell Brown" type of protector. I would be trying to strike a deal with GWS for access to the mini draft for Jackson (add a sweetener if needed). If not for the mini draft then seek a compensation pick, it would still have to be worth more than his perceived open trade value.

Let Jacko furnish his retirement with more money than we all think he deserves at RFC and we can then hopefully access some premium AFL talent that would otherwise be out of reach.

Seem to recall reading that Sydney expressed interest in Jacko in past trade periods.
Can anyone confirm this?
A trade outside of GWS would surely be diminished in value due to his recent two seasons being below his best, but still may be viable if GWS baulk.

May be some interesting times ahead in this trade week I think!

Looking at the sort of deals supporters are willing to give up to access the mini draft, if the clubs are equally as keen and willing to give up similar then it would require a heck of a sweetener!

Grundy in the U17 mini draft would be a good one to target... might only need the 3rd or even 4th best offer with O'Meara clearly the #1 target of clubs, and Crouch highly desired also.

* Edit * just realised the obvious - since he is uncontracted, if GWS were really that interested, and Jackson willing to go there, then they would just sign his as an uncontracted player. Not point discussing him in relation to a bid to get into the mini draft!

I also have been a strong believer in this...but in recent weeks Rance may be showing that doesn't mean you can't perform well at the level. Both him and Jacko are dumb footballers, but can they be trained to make better decisions. Obviously some players do it naturally, and some after a few drills learn it, these guys need continual and lengthy drills at training and IF everyone plays their role in the game plan, the 'dumb' decisions are greatly reduced by the 'dumb' footballers.

Unfortunately, with our young, inexperienced and and at times 'lazy few' in the team, the dumb players make dumb decisions and goals against result. (big Graham's 15m thump from the defensive 50, straight into their forward line towards goal was a classic..although didn't result in a goal...McGuane's... we would need a seperate thread!!!).

With Jackson though, I am not sure it is poor decision making, or poor skill level. Either way, at his age now, we have what we have I think.

RFC have to be careful with how they treat the Jacko issue. If he is putting his hand out after hard years of loyal service, they had better be prepared to pay the odds or risk undermining a growing sense of cadre amongst our young list. Personally, I think the Jacko criticism is way off the mark. He has played the 'hard man' role well at a time when he has had very little back up - and I'm not even sure that it's a role he would have chosen in different circumstances. Yes, his disposal has been iffy at times, but I see him as a required player for a host of reasons.

Indeed, he's in his prime playing years, part of the leadership group, and plays one of our most important roles each week. When he's properly fit he's in our best handful of players.

He's not the kind of bloke to be asking way above his worth, if there is actually any real conflict then he's probably asking for the equivalent of what similar players at other clubs are getting and we - in our customary fashion of being blind as to where our bread is really buttered - are offering well below that.

On Sunday we saw what happens when we play enough midfielders with big bodies and a side with enough run - anyone who wants to take away from that for next year by trading key elements of our growing capacity to compete is a fool of the highest order.

Whats this role he plays that is so important, as for the other point, just no, if he is in our best handful of players we may as well shut up shop.
