Off to Adelaide next weekend, with the obligatory state library session locked in, as well as taking in a SANFL match.

Filling in some gaps for Kowree-Naracoorte, Lameroo, Tatiara and Western Border from the 1980s while I am there.

What info are you after for the Kowree-Naracoorte and Western Border from the 1980s?

I need some finals results, mainly because the matches seem to have been played on Sundays and I only have access to the Monday Sun and Age which didn't include Sunday results). Most of the WBFL ones seemed to have been missed by the papers.

My needs are:

My VFL Reserves project is now complete. All scores have been found, and ladders have been created from the results. From the mid 30s onwards, all ladder positions agree with sources such as the Football Record and The Age. There are some minor discrepancies before this, but number of wins draws and losses are correct. Official records do not show percentages early, and it would seem any side outside of the Final Four were not always named in correct sequence.

Most games have been given where they played with a very small few exceptions during the Second World War.

I have also included quarter by quarter scores where known, and goalkickers - 7 goals or more.

Enjoy - any constructive feedback is welcome.
Outstanding work, well done! Tremendous skill.

May I make a possible change to the below. My records show it was Frank Bourke Snr who kicked 13 goals, not O'Rourke.

Very happy to change this one. Sporting globe definitely says Bourke. I think I need to have my eyes checked!

Hi Bassoon

This is such amazing work! I hope you don't mind but I've incorporated an earlier version of the spreadsheet you shared to my personal database / site. The only two season I've left out were the 1966 and 1971 seasons. This is because in 1966, four games involving Richmond had the results overturned, and similarly in 1971, four games involving Fitzroy had the results overturned, and for both of these cases, I could not identify the specific games to which these applied. Would you happen to have come across which specific games these may have been?

Also, for the game between University and St Kilda on 15/05/1920, when I was looking through Trove I could only find at most the 3QT score, which happened to be 10.9 - 1.10. This happens to be the same FT score that you've got in your spreadsheet. I was curious whether you managed to find an article where the FT score was stated?

Thanks in advance!

Hi McPang

Thanks for the kind words - please feel free to use any of my stuff.

There were three games in 1966 where Richmond lost Premiership points over Frank Laughlin not being registered. Checking the reserves teams, Laughlin was named in the Round 12 and Round 15 matches. Unfortunately, the Age did not have reserves games teams for Round 13 (v Footscray), though when both sides met earlier in the year (Round 2), Laughlin was named as an emergency, so I discounted this game.

For 1971, I'm confident of the teams that Fitzroy lost points against, but why I picked the first lot of matches (Rounds 6 to 9) rather than the games later in the year, I have no idea. The only evidence I can find of the points being deducted is from the First Semi Final Football Record (The Age has Fitzroy with 9 wins in Round 22). As St.Kilda beat Fitzroy later in the year, that's the only reason I probably picked the early Rounds.

I have no excuse for the Uni St.Kilda game. No Age or Argus scores, so, somehow, I missed that this was a three quarter score, rather than the full time score. Luckily, I don't think it would make any difference to the Finals Ladders.

Thanks for the above - the 1920 score is possibly lost to History, but I'll do some work at the State Library later in the year, to see if there is any mention in the Sun about 1966 and 1971.

The Argus - Tuesday May 18 1920 Page 10 also shows the same results as The Herald, so it is quite possible that this is the Full Time Score.

Thanks a ton for your replies Bassoon - much appreciated! :)

I do that The Argus score is indeed the full time score (and not just copied from The Herald). I'll have to see if I can find anything further. If only it were clear who the historian was at the Melbourne University Football Club - perhaps old historian/secretary records might have something worth noting. It would be sad for it to be lost to history.

Out of curiosity, have you ever been interested in doing something similar for other leagues? I'm currently working on compiling VFA reserves games (1928-2017), SANFL reserves games (1919-present), WAFL reserves games (1925-present) and TFL/TSL reserves games (1928-present). It's still in its infancy, as I've only done the first year or two of each to get started with a baseline for which teams to add.

As for the disqualified games notes you've provided, I've noted them and I'll let you know if I come across anything!

rbartlett - If I recall correctly, you released a podcast episode interviewing Frank Loughran that I listened to a while back. Is there any chance you ever came across which reserves games he played in 1966 for RFC?

I can assist with the WAFL B Grade/ Reserves scores. The B grade began in 1921 and I have score and venues for each season until 1940, then when it resumed in 1946 as a Colts competitiin.

Hi Brad_5668 - that sounds amazing!

At the moment for WAFL B-Grade/Association/Seconds/Reserves, I only have 1925 (self-sourced), and 1946-present (WAFL Footy Facts). I did make a start on 1926 but then got distracted by filling in the TFL from 1908 onwards instead. Too much to do, not enough time. I do also take perhaps a little longer than I should when filling this stuff in because I try to clean up the round numbering/classifications as much as possible as I do it.

Would love to figure out a way to collaborate on this. I am still quite new to this site so I don't even the capability to message etc. so I'm not sure what the best approach is for us to share our findings. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Send me a message with your email address and I'll email you the document.

Will do! It looks like I'm still unable to send a message to anyone privately just yet, it seems I'll have to post a bit more first before I get that capability - but I will as soon as I can. On another note, would you happen to know which season was first in which they used "Reserves" (instead of "Seconds") e.g. VFL Seconds -> VFL Reserves for 1960? Unlike the senior level, there's a lot less information out there about name changes throughout the seasons.

Brad_5668 - just curious whether you'd be able to message to me first to start the conversation? Any message would do then I believe I would be able to reply back with an email address.
