I know people are saying hughes is our great white hope but looking at his attributes i cant wait to see this guy out on the park for us in 09 hopefully. 192cm 88kg quickest over 20 meters great leap good contested mark dont quote me on this but what i have read. anyone know how he has been travelling for coburg? and do you think he cant step up next year and become the ff chf where looking for?

His draft tapes last year made his marking look almost as good as Richo's. Massive wrap for his marking.

I think his fitness was pathetic last year so it's up to him to be able to put 4 quarters together.

His attributes are pretty exciting for a PSD pick aren't they? :D

Was playing Chb in the 3s
Not sure why he was recruited as a tall
As Moore Thursfield Mcguane etc started settling down
he was quickly moved forward i think he kicked 5-8 one week in the 3s than started playings 2s as a forward i believe

this guy might be the forward we have been looking for looks very very good in all areas.

There is a reason why he was overlooked until the PSD with those attributes you guys are drooling over.

90% chance the recruiters were right and his issue will hold him back.

And no I wont say what it is because it is personal.

Too short for CHF. FF ? depends on what the clubs intentions are with this position. I reckon a tall wingman - he could take the spot made famous be richo this year.
Isn't Lloyd about that height?

err, we're hoping it's the same reasons, Foley, Thursfield and Moore were overlooked in the draft boofhead:eek:

You don't tease us with that type of information and then say nothing. Not cool.

Maybe it is the same reason Dean Cox, Aaron Davey, Kel Moore, Nathan Foley, etc. were over looked.

This is a thread with reasons why Gourdis wasn't picked up in the ND.

Seems he didn't believe in himself enough according to Weaver.

That is pretty true. I work at the AIS and as such am involved in the draft camp testing that takes place every year. I've gotta say I really liked the look of this young fella and his sprint time was sensational for a guy of his size. I also watched his skills work and was very impressed with his hands and his reading of the ball in flight - I expected him to go reasonably early.

His only issue was his self belief. At the camp he always seemed to be a little down and certainly not as sure of himself as some of the other players. He didn't interact particularly well with other members of the testing groups and didn't project a huge amount of confidence in his interviews with club officials. I'm not sure why that would be because from what I saw of him he definitely bleongs on an AFL list. A lot of the coaches/recruiting staff took notice when he ran that 20m sprint time - but his attitude tempered the interest. If this is something that he can work on, and I sincerely believe that he can, then I think he will be a very good footballer. If his issue is resolved you blokes have picked up an absolute steal.

Should compliment some of the other ripping young talent you've got at your club. I really rate Cotchin as a future star and I think your young blokes down back are underrated. Together with guys like Deledio, Riewoldt and Hughes there's a damn good group coming through.

Thank you Jonesy, that was a valuable post :thumbsu:

If Dave has an illness then club psychologists will do their best. If it's just his nature and he's a happy young man then hopefully the playing group get behind him and make him feel comfortable.

Running around the forward line with Jack Riewoldt in your ear bossting your confidence would be as good as it gets for a young forward lacking confidence.

I really hope he comes on because he sounds like Richo in more ways than one :)

Attitudes can be changed, no matter how you feel when you are 17 years old. I have some experience with this area so if he's suffering something I can fully understand how hard it would be for him.

With good people around him he'll be fine, and we've got good people around him ;)

Hughes was AVG ~ 4g a game at coburg, until DG can do at least that in the Burger seniors, I'd urge everyone to keep it in the pants:eek:

Agreed - Wow we get ahead of ourselves!

When one of the most athletic player in ages, who is also a decent build and height goes through the main draft without being picked up by ALL clubs.....doesn't that tell you something?

To me it means he has a hellavu lot to work on. It also means he may not even make it to senior footy, let alone being better than a player who as it stands is not even a regular senior footy player in cleve huges.

Is his *upside* bigger than hughes....well that's irrelevant if he never plays! Remember Krakouer? He never was able to improve his fitness adequatley despite giving it his best. It's no given. (And fitness isn't the only area he is working on.)

Late picks & rookies come in 2 types.

1) Players who have lots of potential, but have some flaws that need to be overcome ( and the clubs thinks they can be )
2) Players who are good enough to make 15-25 on the list, and are add depth, but are unlikely to get much beyond that. ( although sometimes you get lucky ).

Gourdis is very definately in catagory 1...He'll either make it big time or he wont make it at all. Give him 2-3 years, and decide then which it'll be.

By the sound of it, his problem is confidence/attitude, so give him a lot of time with the sports psychologist. What to do with him depends on how his mind works...either leave him in the 3s where he can (hopefully) dominate or promoting to show the club has faith in his abilities...
