David Warner - where is he headed?

I don't think there's any doubt that Warner is one of the best 20/20 players in the world at present. I would go to the cricket just to watch him bat.

But is that all he will ever be? A 20/20 entertainer? Or can he get back into the ODI side soon? He only averages 15 or so in his handful of international matches, but he's a much better player than that.

Given that he's only 23, do you guys see him ever challenging for a baggy green? I'd say at this stage, it's unlikely, but his form in the Sheffield Shield this season has been ok (I think).

Just interested in hearing others views.

he is just a 20/20 player at the moment imo. but i wouldn't say his spot in the australian side is safe as houses they way thing have been going. if misses a few games in a row or more and mitch marsh and tim paine make hay and score plenty of runs. he wont get another chance

is a mile away from a test spot - needs to learn to drive the ball straight down the wicket for starters!!!

has a good pull, cut and cover drive (albeit a bit loose)

needs to learn to sniff leather and get his elbow higher if he wants to play 4 or 5 day cricket

The biggest problem Warner will have is other people and their old school mentality. The guy is a gun, mixes it with the best on a world stage in T20 and should be getting more of an opportunity in the ODI's and in first class cricket for NSW considering they're giving someone like Moises Henriques an extended run in all forms when he hasn't produced an innings anywhere near the capabilities of Warner.

Would love to see him play ODI and maybe even Test Cricket, he has the talent to do so. He said in an interview with Inside Cricket that he doesn't want to be pigeonholed as a 20/20 player, and apparantly he is working very hard on his game to become a ODI player, I believe we could see him playing Test cricket one day, he has the talent, and I for one am a massive fan of him.

Right know he's only in the 20/20 team but in the future he'll probably he in the ODI team.

Victim of his good form last season. He never should have played for Australia in OD's tbh. But a couple of big scores against Tassie plus the t20 match and bam he's in there and failing much to no-one's surprise.

He's not a opener in the forms longer than 20 overs imo, he's played 7 for NSW in the past 2 OD matches and done pretty well (34 off 20 against to Queensland to help get us home and 60 odd off 40 odd to help get us to 296 against SA), I think he's got more chance of succeeding there than at opener.

I think he'll also be a player who whenever he has a good innings, the press will start calling for him to return to the OD team.....

Yeah, has been playing well at 7, especially against SA. Think he only made 13 or something in the Shield game yesterday.

With the emergence of Watson and Haddin capable of attacking at the top, the need for Warner as opener has dimminished. If he can continue his form down the order for NSW he will improve his chances of reclaiming his ODI spot as we still could use a lower order blaster. Adding bowling would be the biggie given our limited part timers of late.

Possible ODI spot, but needs to show he is good enough for it which he hasn't so far.

Agree. The other problem was once he played in that one game, he was talking himself up, saying he wanted to play for Australia in all three levels. He failed at the one day level pretty dismally, and we actually have some good one day players like Klinger, etc who are more deserving of selection. At least someone like Afridi can come up with new shots.

For some reason NSW are picking him for thier Shield side (they must have lots of injuries) and he keeps failing there.

I reckon we play him in the shield because the selectors are afraid he'll go to another state if we don't give him chances.

Not sure why though, the NSW batting is close to the weakest of every state, if he couldn't get a game with us, he wont get a game in any other states batting line up.

I looked up his stats and there are the scores he made 4 games out the 6 before he was picked to play for AUS in ODI's;

and the 89 in the T20

Players haven't been picked for doing far more and some picked for doing less, but he was in good nick at the time but failed at ODI level.

I will eat my hat if he ever develops enough as a batsman enough to be a genuine Test player though. He really is the definition of a slogger, and cricket is in a good enough state in Australia that we'll never require sloggers to fill specialist batsmen slots in our Test team.

Today was the first time I saw him bat, seems like a person that would be a good fit only in T-20 and that too on pitches that support batters.

Technique is just in the above average class and overall seems like someone that won't graduate to the next level.

Can't pick a #7 at ODI level who is not a wicket keeper or an all-rounder, whether Watson is opening or not.
