After losing 6/23, I think Neser's runs a more important then you think.
Our last five wickets have gone for 166, 139 (for three wickets), 100, 93, 82 and 23.

The 23 is a massive outlier, and to pick a bowler for their batting would be a huge overreaction.

He goes alright in Australia too just quietly. Whatever you think of the standard of the competition, he can only perform in it - and perform he has done and is still doing.

First-class bowling in Aust over the past 6 seasons:
22/23 - 47 wickets @ 17.31
21/22 - 18 wickets @ 19.11
20/21 - 22 wickets @ 24.27
19/20 - 37 wickets @ 20.18
18/19 - 33 wickets @ 23.03
17/18 - 39 wickets @ 21.84
I know he does, my point was that his current county form is not screaming that he must be picked.

His form doesn’t warrant a big structural shake up to pick 4 seamers, nor does it warrant picking him ahead of someone like Josh Hazlewood.

I like Neser, but I'd be surprised if he performed any better than Boland with the ball.

There's been plenty of players over the years with good FC bowling records who haven't gotten a big look in, including Boland, Sayers, Neser and if we go back a little, Joe Mennie.

There's usually a reason these guys haven't been selected that is evident when they play in Tests. Boland was somewhat of an exception but his limitations were on show this series and he's unlikely to play again.

While the selectors have made questionable batting decisions over the years, they've usually been pretty spot on around which pace bowlers to invest in and select looking beyond someone's Cricinfo record which is usually the case for people online.

The idea of stacking our side with players who are good but not great in both disciplines is something we used to mock England for. Selecting Maxwell is no different than England selecting Moeen and yet he's now being floated as an option. Neser would be in a similar vein, hasn't actually done anything outstanding with the ball and given he'll be batting at 8, I'm not sure what advantage that gives us over Starc/Cummins who're already producing with the bat for us.
It is interesting with Boland in the 1st innings and his few overs in the 2nd at Headingley I thought he bowled well without luck. His last few overs were poor though

it's frustrating watching the edge fly through slips, he had a LBW that was umpires call, then you get Mitch Marsh come in and they smash him to first slip you go life's not fair

England have had the pick of bowling conditions so far but my question for those far more knowledgeable is would Cummins, Hazlewood, Boland, Green swing it as much as Broad, Wood, Woakes, Robinson, Anderson given similar conditions? The main reason I have for considering Neser is that he seems able to swing the ball significantly under English conditions.

You also made another point, ie the standard of the comp he was playing in (Div 2).

I was more addressing that, in that he has also had a fine (and very consistent) track record in f-c cricket in Australia as well.

Boland hasn’t had a lot of luck to his way, that in part also owes to how England have played him, though. It’s pretty obvious he’s been targeted as a bit of a weak link that they can deliberately go after, use their feet to and put under pressure so it stands to reason he would have more mis hits and plays and misses etc.

Fair, my point about the standard was kind of in response to a lot of people demanding he be picked off the back of his 170

Think this will be the team. No point playing Murphy if Cummins doesn't trust him right now.

I'd say there's next to no chance of only going into a test match with 3 specialist bowlers & only one of Marsh or Green will play.

It's strange Neser hasn't had more of a go. Would be comparable to Boland or Hazlewood as a bowler and was the shield's best player last season, plus he can average 30+ with the bat. Perfect for English conditions...

Cummins, Starc and Neser are our best quick options imo.

Warner is such a liability being so susceptible to Broad. Green, Renshaw or Harris would all be preferable.

Murphy out if we aren't planning on bowling him.

With the amount of overs Murphy bowled they pretty much did that last test. I will concede there is a reasonable chance they won't play both Marsh or Green in which case Hazlewood in for Boland, Neser in for Murphy

Will be interesting to see how Neser goes with the ball in his game because I believe he will have to go extremely well with it to have a chance to get into the 4th test team.

LMAO are people actually saying Maxwell 🤣

🤡🤡🤡🤡
I love Maxwell but surely not!!

Others have noted he was withdrawn from the One Hundred ... If selectors were to go down that path are they thinking an Ali type role batting at 7 ahead of Carey. With Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood/Neser.

A lineup of:
Green
Usman
Marnus
Smith
Head
Marsh
Maxwell
Carey
Starc
Cummins
Hazlewood.

We have selected worse sides but I don't see Maxwell playing. In reality we need some runs out of Marnus and Smith. Too much responsibility is currently falling on Khawaja and Heads shoulders. If they stick with Warner and he inevitably nicks Broad to slip within the first 5 overs and Uzzie also fails .. I could easily move from functioning alcoholic to fully blown!! 😭🍺🍻

Whose place does he take though?
Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood will all play (if fit).
Murphy easy I would say Hazelwood doesn't deserve a pick anymore
