AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
if you are able to separate yourselves from the collingwood hatred for a few mins, i suggest you sit back and view these highlights from the 2011 prelim.
it was as tough a game as youd want, with low scores, pressure, and two teams reliant on each player performing in their role. dawes played very well that night - presenting himself when required, running all night, kicking a couple, providing the alternative to cloke as well as occasionally freeing cloke up - much the same as he could for clark next year.
despite all the BS about his form slump, marking etc, the positives are he has a huge engine, tries his guts out and will no doubt bleed for neeld. he will get a huge positive response when we next meet.
Good fit and well worth the trade imo - he doesn't need to come in and be a superstar to have a big impact for MFC next year....if he comes in and plays a 7/10 season, his size and presence (as well as the fact that he can serously play footy when he's on) provide Melbourne with a SIGNIFICANTLY better balanced side - even if he plays a 6-6.5/10 season next year he will clearly improve that forward line, and Clarke, Howe and maybe even Watts will reap the benifits.
If he can recapture his 8/10 level of form again, he will be huge for Melbourne.
On that, how do you guys see the forward line structuring up, and what roles within that forward line do you see each player playing??
Would we see?:
HF ??? Dawes Watts
FF Howe Clarke ???
Or do people seeing Howe playing higher and Watts getting some more time playing from behind the ball for a while?
And I'm presuming Clarke and Dawes will alternate who plays deepest depending on match ups, yeah?
I'm really interested to watch Melbourne's forward line next year and see how they go about it now.
Hmm, I do think one thing that's not been mentioned enough is the influence of both Neeld and Anvil at Melbourne. Having coached and played with Dawesy respectively, they would know better than most people what Chris can offer to Melbourne and what he is worth.
BigFooty love to lay the boots into Dawes after one shocking season, but if his confidence is up and he's not forced to ruck then he will be an important cog for the Demons both on and off the field.
I'm hoping he does well and that the trade turns out to be a win-win scenario.
Disappointed, but not surprised at BF's general reaction though. Shows they have NFI about Melbourne, or about Dawes. Your team were using third-tall type defenders in Rivers and Garland as KPFs when Clark got injured.
Happy to land the deal. I trust that Neeld and co. know what they are getting with Dawes, having seen him first hand. We've gone from having a forward line with the likes of Miller, Newton and Bate to having Clark and Dawes, which is a massive improvement.
For the record, the last ten pick 20's in the draft:
Hayden Crozier (Frem)
Jayden Pitt (Frem)
Nathan Fyfe (Frem)
Tom Swift (WCE)
Tony Notte (WCE)
Tom Hislop (Ess)
Paul Bower (Carl)
Dean Polo (Rich)
Sam Butler (WCE)
Will Minson (Bull)
Fyfe, gun. Minson, solid. Butler, battler. Polo/Bower/Hislop/Notte, duds. Swift, retired. Pitt/Crozier, unproven.
So have a think about it, is pick 20 really paying overs?
Do you guys realise he came 82nd in contested marks and wasn't in the top 100 for goals last year? The reports of 500k a year a false aren't they?
Collingwood preferred the 30 yo Qlynch to Dawes.
I'd be forcing Leigh brown
To play if he can't turn him into something special
Looking at a number only is folly.
2008 Tom Swift at #20
Subsequent picks = #21 Ballantyne. #22 Trengove #23 Zaharakis #24 Suban #25 Redden #29 Beams #30 Hannebery
Pick #20 looks pretty good now should have one picked the right player
Whichever way: Good luck Dawes and good luck Melbourne.
Two picks for Dawes? That's a shocking a deal after his form this season.
Collingwood did not have as much leverage as everyone likes to think, they wanted to offload Dawes and Dawes wanted out of Coolingwood. There is no way they would have kept a disgruntled player on their list. So why did Melbourne allow themselves to be bent over a barrel to get him? They should have walked away from the trade table, and then make a lowball offer to Collingwood at the deadline next week.
Unless Dawes goes on to kick 50 goals next year, the recruiting department should be sacked.
The last time we went into the first round of a draft looking for a KPP, we got Lucas Cook.Unless Dawes goes on to kick 50 goals next year, the recruiting department should be sacked.
Ok, you got me.
Going to really miss that 0.7 goals a game, for the bargain basement price of pick 20 (and an upgrade ) and 2.1 million dollars.

I heard the blues are thinking about redrafting Fev
I heard melbourne were taking Jack Watts at number 1 in one of the strongest drafts of all time.
Levi will be a better player than dawes next year as our second forward.
Dawes has only ever played in a top four team and kicked 30 in a dominate Premiership tea mwhere Jolly and Leigh Brown were the rucks, how do you really think he will go at Melbourne, will less supply and worse delivery?
Have you forgotten that he got dropped last in rd 23 even though they had no one to bring in? and that they chose to take the 30 year old Q Stick instead of him?
They had no cap space, they had to get rid of dawes, you could have gotten him for much, much cheaper than pick 20....and that pick upgrade at the end is just insulting . Was this trade a thankyou for them letting you keep the $$ from the queens birthday every year?
